Thai authorities defuse four bombs in Phuket, arrest suspects
BANGKOK: Thai police have found and defused four explosive devices at Phuket airport and at popular tourist destinations on the holiday island, the Bangkok Post reported on Friday, according to German news agency (dpa).
A motorcycle packed with explosives was found at the airport on Wednesday, two devices were found at Patong Beach on the west coast and one at Phromthep Cape at the southern tip.
On Tuesday, police arrested two suspects, who divulged details of the explosive devices planted, according to the Khaosod newspaper.
The suspects are reported to be from the southern Thai province of Pattani.
Their motive was unclear.
Phuket airport advised travellers to allow additional time for check-in and security procedures.

Tiong, who is on a working visit to Bangkok from June 27 to July 3, officiated at the festival, aiming to enhance bilateral tourism cooperation and lay the foundation for stronger ties ahead of VM2026. He emphasised that the festival plays a significant role in the lead-up to next year's Visit Malaysia, aiming to boost visibility and strengthen Malaysia's image as a welcoming and diverse travel destination. "This initiative directly contributes to our 2025 tourism targets of achieving 43 million international tourist arrivals and generating RM283.8 billion in tourism receipts for the country,' he said. Tiong noted that the festival is part of Tourism Malaysia's ongoing efforts to promote VM2026, particularly by encouraging Thai tourists to explore Malaysia's unique attractions. "Hosting the festival at such a high-traffic and accessible location allows us to showcase Malaysian culture and cuisine to a wide audience, encouraging more Thai and regional travellers to consider Malaysia for their next holiday destination,' he added. According to Tourism Malaysia's records, Thailand contributed 2.26 million visitors to Malaysia in 2024, generating RM3.994 billion in tourism receipts. - Bernama

She was previously detained for two nights by Thai authorities on charges of illegally entering the country and begging. According to Thailand's The Nation media outlet, the woman, Wan Naree, who has a disabled left arm, had been begging in Thailand. On Wednesday (June 25), she and several others protested at their inability to return to Cambodia because of the closure of the Khlong Luek border checkpoint, opposite the Poipet checkpoint in Banteay Meanchey province. The media reported that she shouted at Thai immigration officials and demanded that they open the checkpoint and let return to Cambodia. At that point, she was arrested, then charged with illegally entering the country and engaging in begging activities. She was detained for two nights, convicted by a court, fined and ordered to be deported. 'She has also been placed on Thailand's immigration blacklist as a 'threat to national security', meaning she is permanently barred from re-entering the Kingdom,' said The Nation. On June 27, she and several others were transported back to Cambodia. She stated that she would not return to Thailand. According to a post on the Facebook page of Prime Minister Hun Manet, the Banteay Meanchey provincial administration, local authorities, and the Cambodian Consulate General in Sa Kaeo province worked diligently to negotiate with Thai authorities, resulting in the release of two women, including Wan Naree, and allowing them to return to Cambodia. - The Phnom Penh Post/ANN
