REM share incredible photo on anniversary of mammoth Slane gig - with familiar openers...
While Slane is known for having its concerts that draw in crowds of 80,000, everyone has that favourite one — and while Harry Styles, Eminem and Metallica have all headlined the Meath castle, one of the most iconic ones to ever take place were when REM came to town.
The rock band headlined Slane in 1995 while on their first world tour in six years, but almost didn't make it to the iconic castle as lead singer Michael Stipe suffered a hernia and required emergency surgery, while drummer Bill Berry collapsed on stage in Switzerland after suffering a brain aneurysm. Despite the band needing to cancel gigs in France and Spain, the band were able to pull through and make it to Slane Castle, where they were joined by incredible openers including Sharon Shannon, Belly, and, fresh off their debut album, Oasis. Yes, there was a time when Oasis were the openers.
The band's lawyer Bertis Downs shared an incredible aerial photo of just how big the Slane gig was, with him reminiscing on how the gig was actually touch and go ahead of the gig, and how Ireland became one of their favourite places to tour.
'Gazing at this photograph taken from above the grounds of Slane Castle and the epic R.E.M. concert, I have a few memories flashing across my mind,' he wrote. 'It was the first show after the brief stoppage of the tour in central Europe when Mike Mills came down with abdominal issues necessitating emergency surgery and cancelling a few shows through France and Spain. REM performed at Slane in 1995, in a gig that was one of the most memorable in the country. 'Mike was not at 100%, but it was safe medically for him to play–the band, including Mike, delivered an amazing performance in front of a crowd that had been watching R.E.M. in their country for 10 years but never in a venue as majestic as Slane Castle,' he continued. 'It's the kind of show that doesn't happen very often with logistical challenges galore but an incredible physical experience as the sun goes down over the magnificent landscape.
'It was one of many engagements that made R.E.M. consider Ireland a true home away from home time and again, year after year, and a quarter of a century ago today.' Opening for the band were a fresh faced Oasis who just released their debut album, Definitely Maybe. Pic: Independent NewsThe band first played in Ireland on their second tour in 1984, just playing a club show before heading to the RDS in 1989. They have also played huge gigs in Landsdowne Road in 1999, Marlay Park in 2003 and The Point in 2005.
As for their openers, Oasis went on to be one of the biggest bands, well, ever; and after a tumultuous split in 2009 announced their reunion, and are currently on tour, with them playing five nights in their native Manchester last week.
They're set to headline Wembley this weekend, and then Murrayfield in Edinburgh — before heading to Croke Park on August 16 and 17.

The Diddly Squat Farm Shop's Instagram page wrote: "It's going to be a rough year. All that seed sowed, drowned with the constant rain." What is bovine TB? Bovine Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease of cattle and badgers. It is caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium bovis (M. bovis) which can also infect and cause disease in many other mammals including humans, deer, goats, pigs, cats, dogs and badgers. In cattle, it is mainly a respiratory disease. What are the symptoms? It is hard to spot bovine TB as the signs are similar to other diseases and normally only develop in the advanced stages. It is normally picked up in cattle testing before clinical signs develop or during inspections of slaughtered cattle. Animals can get thinner, have a light fever that keeps coming back, appear weak and have a reduced appetite. Some will also have swollen lymph nodes, in the neck and a moist cough which is worse in the morning and during cold weather or exercise. The government states it may cause chronic mastitis, an infection of the udder. How is transferred between animals? Evidence of bovine TB is most commonly found in the lymph glands of throat and lungs of affected animals. They spread the disease mainly through coughing and sneezing. Bacteria are released into the air and inhaled by other animals in close contact. The disease can pass from badgers to cattle via close contact - and vice versa. Contaminated equipment, animal waste, feed and pasture can also transfer the infection. Can humans catch it from cattle? Humans can catch bovine TB through: unpasteurised milk or dairy products from an infected cow, buffalo, goat or sheep inhaling bacteria breathed out by infected animals inhaling bacteria released from the carcasses of infected animals or from their excretions (such as faeces) Infection is more likely if an unprotected wound is exposed to bacteria from an infected animal. But the government insists the risk of infection is very low for the vast majority of the population. Symptoms are similar to human TB, including weight loss, fever, night sweats and a persistent cough. Anyone who develops these symptoms should consult a doctor. The disease can be treated by a complex combination of drugs over a long period. And Clarkson's right-hand man The farmer turned TV hero, 27, told fans his pricey post knocker, used for hammering in fences, had been stolen on Tuesday. Another firm's £70k John Deere tractor was also taken, with a burnt-out SUV car found down the road. Meanwhile, earlier this month Jeremy slammed the "fun police" after Keen to spread the word about Diddly Squat Farm's Hawkstone lager, The Sun columnist hired a 34-strong choir of real British farmers to sing their own version of a classic opera tune. Hilariously, the farmers switched up the words to sing: "F*** me it's good".
