UAE opens field hospital in South Sudan

The National09-03-2025
The UAE has opened a field hospital in South Sudan to help treat vulnerable communities most in need, state news Wam reported on Saturday. The Madhol Field Hospital in the Northern Bahr el Ghazal state of the country aims to support those facing challenges in accessing essential services, especially urgent health care and treatment. Wam said this was particularly significant amid health challenges such as the spread of malaria caused by insufficient medical services and inadequate access to medication. 'Today, as we celebrate with South Sudan and reap the benefits of our strong bilateral relations and deep-rooted values, we announce the inauguration of Madhol Field Hospital, which has a 100-bed capacity, and several specialised clinics to treat approximately two million people from the host community, South Sudanese returning from Sudan, and Sudanese refugees in Northern Bahr el Ghazal state,' said Sheikh Shakhbout bin Nahyan, Minister of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, at the opening. 'Since its founding, humanitarian aid and the protection of civilians, particularly the sick, children, the elderly, and women, have served as the foundation of the UAE's policy.' South Sudan split from Sudan in 2011. Civil war followed and a peace deal in 2018 has yet to be fully implemented. A civil war also broke out in Sudan in April, 2023. The UN has said last year that Sudan has been world's largest displacement crisis with at least 11 million displaced. The hospital is the third healthcare centre built by the UAE to provide medical services to Sudanese refugees in neighbouring countries after two previous field hospitals that were opened in Amdjarass and Abeche, Chad. Sheikh Shakhbout said the UAE had been resolute in its position in relation to the crisis in neighbouring Sudan since April 2023. The country's primary focus remains on addressing the catastrophic humanitarian situation and prioritising civilians, he said. Sheikh Shakhbout said the UAE was committed to supporting all efforts to address the crisis and to work alongside regional and international partners to ensure stability and peace for the Sudanese people. 'The UAE announced an additional US$200 million of aid during the High-Level Humanitarian Conference for the People of Sudan, held in Addis Ababa,' he said. Sheikh Shakhbout added the UAE had provided more than $600 million to support a humanitarian response and provided US$3.5 billion of humanitarian aid over the past 10 years to the people of Sudan. The opening of the hospital was attended by several ministers and officials from both the UAE and South Sudan, and international organisations. 'We express our appreciation to the UAE for its leading international humanitarian efforts in enhancing the healthcare sector in Africa, through several projects and initiatives,' said Dr Humphrey Karamagi, World Health Organisation Representative for South Sudan. Simon Uber Mawut, governor of Northern Bahr el Ghazal, said it was a 'historic day'. 'Today is the moment we have been waiting for, and we thank the UAE for constructing Madhol Field Hospital, which will aim to address health challenges in our region. Today is a historic day for the residents of Northern Bahr el Ghazal state and the entire region.' The opening of the hospital came following the directives of President Sheikh Mohamed, and under the supervision of the International Humanitarian and Philanthropic Council.

Israel will let foreign countries drop aid into Gaza, Israel army radio says

Israel will allow foreign countries to parachute aid into Gaza starting on Friday, Israeli army radio quoted a military official as saying. An Israeli military spokesperson did not immediately reply to a Reuters request for comment on the report. The Gaza health ministry says more than 100 people have died from starvation in Gaza since Israel cut off supplies to the territory in March. Israel, which has been at war with Hamas in Gaza since October 2023, lifted that blockade in May but has restrictions in place that it says are needed to prevent aid from being diverted to other groups. In the first two weeks of July, the UN children's agency UNICEF treated 5,000 children facing acute malnutrition in Gaza. World Health Organisation chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Wednesday Gaza was suffering man-made mass starvation caused by a blockade on aid into the enclave.

‘People in Gaza are neither dead nor alive, they are walking corpses,' says UN agency

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees said that 'people in Gaza are walking corpses' as mass starvation engulfed the territory due to Israel's blockade and ongoing military offensive. More than 100 charity and human rights groups said that Israel's blockade is pushing Palestinians in the Gaza Strip toward starvation. Commissioner-General of UNRWA Philippe Lazzarini said a colleague in Gaza told me, "People in Gaza are neither dead nor alive, they are walking corpses.' According to UNRWA latest findings, one in every five children is malnourished in Gaza City as cases increase every day. Yazan, a malnourished 2-year-old Palestinian boy, sit with his brothers at their damaged home in the Al-Shati refugee camp, Gaza City. AFP Lazzarini said on X, 'When child malnutrition surges, coping mechanisms fail, access to food & care disappears, famine silently begins to unfold. 'Most children our teams are seeing are emaciated, weak and at high risk of dying if they don't get the treatment they urgently need. 'More than 100 people, the vast majority of them children, have reportedly died of hunger. 'This deepening crisis is affecting everyone, including those trying to save lives in the war-torn enclave. 'UNRWA frontline health workers, are surviving on one small meal a day, often just lentils, if at all. They are increasingly fainting from hunger while at work. When caretakers cannot find enough to eat, the entire humanitarian system is collapsing. 'Families are no longer coping, they are breaking down, unable to survive. Their existence is threatened. Palestinian mother Samah Matar holds her malnourished son Youssef in Gaza City. Reuters 'Allow humanitarian partners to bring unrestricted and uninterrupted humanitarian assistance to Gaza. We, at UNRWA, have the equivalent of 6,000 loaded trucks of food & medical supplies in Jordan and Egypt." The Israeli government's "restrictions, delays, and fragmentation under its total siege have created chaos, starvation, and death," the letter said. WHO Director Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus echoed that criticism, telling reporters that acute malnutrition centers in Gaza are full of patients and lack adequate supplies. He said rates of acute malnutrition exceed 10% and that among pregnant and breastfeeding women, more than 20% are malnourished, often severely. The UN health agency's representative in the occupied Palestinian territories, Dr. Rik Peeperkorn, said there were more than 30,000 children under 5 with acute malnutrition in Gaza and that the WHO had reports that at least 21 children under 5 have died so far this year. The Israeli Foreign Ministry rejected the criticism in the open letter and accused the groups of "echoing Hamas' propaganda." It said it has allowed around 4,500 aid trucks into Gaza since lifting a complete blockade in May, and that more than 700 trucks are waiting to be picked up and distributed by the UN.

More than 17,500 Afghan evacuees hosted by UAE resettled

The UAE has hosted 17,619 Afghan evacuees since the Taliban ousted the US-backed government in 2021, providing them with critical care and facilities at the Emirates Humanitarian City prior to their resettlement in 21 countries. The evacuees were provided with high-quality accommodation and services such as healthcare, shelter, food, logistical support and diplomatic facilitation, with the total cost amounting to AED1.384 billion ($367 million), national news agency WAM reported. Seventeen embassy offices and representatives from several international organisations, including the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and US Customs and Border Protection (CBP), were stationed at the Emirates Humanitarian City to facilitate the resettlement. Financial assistance was also extended to help families rebuild their lives upon resettlement. In addition, the UAE facilitated the evacuation of more than 41,000 people from Afghanistan, including Afghans and foreign residents. Over 254,000 medical services were delivered, including 34,923 COVID-19 vaccinations. More than 303 newborns received care and over 303 surgeries were successfully performed - with three critical cases treated abroad. Education and vocational development were also prioritised. Over 3,764 Afghans benefitted from educational programmes, including around 800 children enrolled in nurseries and schools. The UAE also organised 39 educational and skills development courses, aiding 2,589 individuals in preparing for their futures. The City also set up outdoor courtyards, recreational spaces and dedicated facilities for women, children and the elderly, alongside a preventive healthcare centre. As one of the top donor countries to Afghanistan, the UAE has provided AED 740 million in humanitarian aid over the past three years. This includes an air bridge delivering hundreds of tonnes of food and relief supplies, benefiting over one million Afghans. The UAE also established 10 maternity and women's healthcare centres across seven provinces and provided crucial medical support during the pandemic.
