'I was nominated for Golden Boy award at Man Utd – but now I'm a free agent'

Daily Mirror30-06-2025
Timothy Fosu-Mensah was nominated for the Golden Boy award alongside Marcus Rashford in 2017, but the Dutchman's career has failed to take off since he left Manchester United four years ago
Once a highly-touted talent at Manchester United, Timothy Fosu-Mensah hasn't played a game of football in two years. The 27-year-old climbed the ranks of the Red Devils youth academy between 2014 and 2016, even earning a nomination for Tuttosport's Golden Boy award alongside Marcus Rashford - despite being restricted to just three starts and four substitute appearances under Jose Mourinho in his debut season.
Neither Fosu-Mensah nor Rashford clinched the title of best young player in Europe, which ultimately was awarded to Kylian Mbappe after his 15-goal and 11-assist season with Monaco. Despite being nominated for the award, which is typically a good indicator of a promising future, Fosu-Mensah's career has largely failed to meet expectations.

The defensive midfielder clocked up just 30 games in total for United during his tenure, spending loan spells with the likes of Crystal Palace and Fulham instead of carving out his path with the Red Devils. A knee ligament injury in April 2019 while on loan at Craven Cottage also kept him out for the better part of a year, further hampering opportunities to make an early impact in his career.

Fosu-Mensah's move to Bayer Leverkusen in January 2021 for a fee rumoured to be around £1.5million was seen as a fresh start, but his hopes were dashed just a month later due to another ligament injury.
The Dutchman's time at the BayArena was plagued with knee and hamstring injuries and fitness issues, limiting him to just 30 appearances before his release last summer, reports the Manchester Evening News.
His final outing for Leverkusen was an 11-minute cameo against RB Leipzig in April 2023, and he didn't feature at all during Leverkusen's title-winning 2023/24 season. Despite this, Fosu-Mensah is optimistic about reigniting his career in 2025/26 provided he finds the right club.
Speaking to PA, he said: "Last season was the first time in my career that I've spent without a team. At this age, it's quite early and I think quite strange for people. I know I've been working hard and hard work won't go unnoticed.
"That's what I believe. If you stay at home, you do nothing and then you think, 'Boom, OK, I'm going to go this club or that club', no, that's not how it works, that's not my mentality. It's definitely a fresh start and I've been working hard."

Reflecting on his time without a club, he added: "There was a couple of situations with agents here and there, which was a bit of a mess. People were speaking on my name who I never even had contact with. I would say like 80 per cent of the agents who were approaching clubs and people I didn't even know, who I didn't even had contact with. I think that was a big mess."
There were talks of Fosu-Mensah heading to the Championship this winter, but he chose instead to train with Ajax reserves for five months with hopes of boosting his fitness. Elsewhere, Fosu-Mensah shared an enduring affection for Manchester United, saying that despite his career taking a different path from the north west.
He added: "I came there when I was 16, I left when I was 23. I've had many nice moments, won a couple of trophies, especially in my first season. We all know United, we all know the history of United, we all know what United stands for."

Marcus Rashford makes Barcelona debut during friendly win in Japan

The 27-year-old, who has joined the Catalan club from Manchester United on a season-long loan, was introduced at half-time before being withdrawn after 78 minutes. Rashford had an effort saved during his first outing for Hansi Flick's side, who took the win courtesy of goals from Eric Garcia, Roony Bardghji and academy star Pedro Fernandez. New guy looked sharp out there — FC Barcelona (@FCBarcelona) July 27, 2025 Bardghji, another summer arrival from Copenhagen, put Barcelona back in front after Taisei Miyashiro had levelled for the hosts. Spain star Lamine Yamal, 18, was presented with Barcelona's famous number 10 shirt – previously worn by the likes of Diego Maradona and Lionel Messi – before kick-off. Flick, quoted on Barcelona's website, explained why Rashford only played for 33 minutes, saying: 'He's a week behind the others. He hasn't been training as much with the ball, and we want to look after him.' Rashford, in a Barca video shown by Sky Sports News, said: 'Good performance, good to play in front of the fans, good (for) fitness. So I'm looking forward to the next games. Marcus Rashford reacts to making his first appearance for Barcelona in their pre-season win over Vissel Kobe in Japan 💪 {Credit: Barcelona} — Sky Sports News (@SkySportsNews) July 27, 2025 'Pleased that we could win the game today but of course the most important thing is just settling in and, for the team, getting the patterns in and playing good football and I thought we did that in both halves. 'It's difficult in games like that where you change the team at half-time, but I thought we did well.' He added: 'The reason I'm here is to help the team try to win. So I'm going to listen to whatever information I need to listen to and try to put it into the game and help the team go forward. 'I can play over different positions. It's one of my strengths, to play across the front line. I'll play where the team needs me and try to score goals and create goals from those positions.'

Max Verstappen blasts FIA for 'ruining' Belgian GP with one key decision

The Belgian Grand Prix took a lot longer than usual as heavy rain forced a long delay at the start of the race, leaving Max Verstappen in particular unhappy with that decision Max Verstappen slammed the Formula 1 race director for his "very cautious" approach to managing conditions at the Belgian Grand Prix. The race was delayed for almost 90 minutes when heavy rain hit the Circuit Spa-Francorchamps and the FIA decided to red flag proceedings after the formation lap. ‌ That first lap took place at 3pm local time as scheduled, when the rain was still pouring. And it soon became clear that visibility was very poor as even Lando Norris, behind only the safety car on pole position, could barely see beyond the spray being thrown up into the air. ‌ And so race director Rui Marques too the decision to abort the start and call for all cars to return to the pit lane. Once he had done that, it was clear that the race would not resume for some time as more heavy rain was on the way. ‌ Eventually things got going, around 90 minutes after the originally scheduled start time. And it was perfect timing for Oscar Piastri who snatched the lead from Norris on the first lap after a rolling start and consolidated that position to win the race. ‌ Verstappen finished fourth, the same place he started, and was left to wonder what might have been had they been allowed to race in the more treacherous conditions, as he made it clear he would have preferred a bolder approach from race control. The Dutchman fumed: "We should have started miles earlier, an hour earlier. A bit of a shame. They took a very cautious approach which we spoke about after Silverstone, to be a little bit more cautious. "But, for me, this was then the other extreme. It just ruined a nice, classic wet race as well. We either still try to push for a proper wet race, or we say, 'You know what, let's just stop racing in the wet and wait for it to be dry. But that's not what you want, right? ‌ "We can still have some really cool wet racing, like we showed at Silverstone." But the race, in the end, was mostly in dry conditions and Verstappen could not find the pace he needed to reel in Charles Leclerc, who spent the whole race successfully defending the final podium place. Verstappen had won the Sprint race a day earlier, able to hold off the McLarens by driving flat out over 15 laps. But tyre degradation proved to be tricky again over a full race distance and that is what he wants his team to address going forward. He said: "The problems we have in the car in tyre management are still there, it doesn't matter what rear wing you put on the car and it also hurt us today in the race. We did the best we could, we made some changes and it was much nicer around the lap. We know what we have to work on but, unfortunately, it was not that straightforward to fix."
