Golf-No luck boxing, blackout is Schauffele's key to Open success

PORTRUSH, Northern Ireland, July 19 (Reuters) - D efending British Open champion Xander Schauffele dragged himself back into contention on Saturday with a superb third-round 66 he put down to "luck boxing". HT Image
The 31-year-old American, who won last year's PGA Championship to claim his first major title before lifting the Claret Jug at Troon, has struggled for form this season.
Opening rounds of 71 and 69 at Royal Portrush left him well off the pace but he finished on seven under to stay on the coat-tails of the leaders.
"Today was nice," he said. "Yesterday felt terrible. Even with some of the shots coming in, I felt like I was luck boxing my way through the back nine, somehow making contact and then sitting it somewhere near the hole and getting it in."
Schauffele rediscovered his touch on the greens to post two eagles and two birdies.
"I've been putting a lot better this week than last week actually," he said. "Tried pretty hard to figure out how to get everything correct to roll the ball well on these greens."
Schauffele is enjoying the buoyant atmosphere around the course created by the local excitement about Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy's bid for a second Open title.
"It's loud, it's cool," he said. "I'm glad he's playing well for his home country. It's sort of what golf needs, and entertainment's high."
Schauffele, however, believes it will be very difficult to retain the Claret Jug with compatriot Scottie Scheffler six shots ahead of him late in his third round.
"I'm so far back, who knows with the weather and whatnot," he said.
"I believe in myself and what I can do. So just blackout hopefully. No luck boxing, blackout, there's your headline, and try to shoot something and give myself a lot of opportunities." (Reporting by Ed Osmond, editing by Pritha Sarkar)

‘Not in spirit of the game': Shubman Gill justifies his spat with Zak Crawley at Lord's, shares update on Akash Deep

Shubman Gill opened up on his heated exchange with Zak Crawley during the Lord's Test, accusing England of time-wasting tactics 'not in the spirit of the game.' Gill also shared updates on India's bowling options for the must-win 4th Test at Old Trafford. read more Shubman Gill has defended his actions on Day 3 at Lord's, where he got involved in an exchange with Zak Crawley. PTI/Reuters India captain Shubman Gill has finally spoken about his heated exchange with Zak Crawley during the third Test at Lord's, saying the situation built up after England's time-wasting tactics and was 'not in the spirit of the game.' India and England players were involved in several altercations during that game, which the home side eventually won by a narrow margin of 22 runs. The spat that caught the most attention was between Gill and Crawley on Day 3. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Gill explained what really happened in the final moments of Day 3 when Jasprit Bumrah was bowling. Speaking at the pre-match press conference on Tuesday, Gill accused the English batters of deliberately wasting time by coming 90 seconds late to the crease and then calling the physio to slow the game further. 'Yes, a lot of people have been talking about it. So, let me just clear the air once and for all. The English batsmen on that day, they had 7 minutes of play left. They were 90 seconds late to come to the crease. Not 10, not 20, 90 seconds late. Yes, most of the teams, they use this,' Gill said. 'Even if we were in a position, we would have also liked to play fewer overs. But there is a manner to do it. And we felt, yes, if you get hit on your body, the physios are allowed to come on. And that is something that is fair. But to be able to come 90 seconds late on the crease is something that is not in the spirit of the game,' he added. Also Read: 'Team always comes first': Irfan Pathan tells Bumrah to learn from Ben Stokes, put in extra effort for India Gill admitted that the reaction was emotional but pointed out it didn't happen suddenly. 'Just leading up to that event, a lot of things that we thought should not have happened, it had happened. And it's not, I wouldn't say it was something that I am very proud of. But there was a lead up and build up to that. It didn't just come out of nowhere,' he said. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD He further explained the mindset in such tense moments. 'We had no intention of doing that whatsoever. But you are playing a game, you are playing to win and there are a lot of emotions involved. And when you see there are things happening that should not happen, sometimes the emotions come out of nowhere.' Shubman Gill also gave an update on the Indian team combination for the must-win fourth Test at Old Trafford, Manchester. 'Akash Deep is unavailable, so is Arshdeep, but we have good players in the team to pick twenty wickets. It is not ideal to have different bowlers but I was prepared,' he said. On the possibility of a debut for young pacer Anshul Kamboj, Gill said the decision will be made on the morning of the match. 'He is very close to making his debut. We will see between Prasidh and Anshul tomorrow,' Gill confirmed. ‘Not the first time Hikaru made factual claims without proper knowledge': FIDE CEO's response to Nakamura's Candidates rating spot reserved for Carlsen's claim

The International Chess body (FIDE) CEO Emil Sutovsky has rebutted Hikaru Nakamura's criticism of the Candidates' rating qualification spot, calling the American GM's claims 'factually incorrect.' Nakamura has said that the only reason FIDE is still giving away a ratings spot is to keep the door open to former world champion Magnus Carlsen, who has repeatedly said that he's not interested in playing either the Candidates or the World Championship. After winning the world championship all the five times he contended, Carlsen walked away from the throne. Since then, China's Ding Liren and then Indian teenager Gukesh have taken their place on it. In this response, Sutovsky said, 'Hikaru often makes statements in good faith, but without knowing all the facts and that's a problem. Of course, he has a larger platform, which makes it difficult to refute him from a smaller one. But that's… well, acceptable,' he said to Chessbase India YouTube channel. While Nakamura insists the rule exists solely to lure back Magnus Carlsen, Sutovsky notes the spot has existed for years and now covers the top two players 'ironically benefitting Hikaru himself.' 'He (Hikaru) claims we designed the rating spot for Magnus, but that's completely illogical. This rating qualification has existed for years – there was always a rating spot (in fact, there used to be two). If it were specifically for Magnus, we would have limited it to only the world No. 1. Instead, the regulation states either No. 1 or No. 2 can qualify by rating. Ironically, one could argue we actually designed it for Hikaru in this case – why else would we leave it open to the top two?' added Sutovsky. Sutovsky detailed how past cycles shaped the current format, stressing it ensures the Candidates feature the world's elite. 'Let me explain the logic: In the previous cycle, the highest-rated player who didn't qualify through other paths could enter (that's how Alireza Firouzja qualified, though his method wasn't entirely kosher – he was around World No. 6 in the world at the time). We later decided this was unfair. We maintain the rating spot to ensure the Candidates include players clearly among the world's best – the top eight. However, we realised we shouldn't go all the way down to No. 6 or No. 7, where rating differences become negligible. It's more logical to reward players who nearly qualified through other means. That's why we limited it to the top two – the Candidates simply shouldn't exclude the world No. 2,' said Sutovsky. 'The reasoning is straightforward: It had nothing to do with Magnus. We never expected his return – why would he come back now? Would he suddenly return after losing 50 rating points? The suggestion makes no sense,' he added. The FIDE rating spot will be given to the highest-rated player according to the 6-month average rating based on FIDE Standard Rating Lists from August 1st 2025 till January 1st 2026 provided the respective player has played at least 40 games calculated for FIDE Standard Rating Lists from February 1st 2025 till January 1st 2026 (including at least 15 games in any of the 6 consecutive rating lists). He went on to say, 'This isn't the first time Hikaru has made factual claims without proper knowledge. When we introduced the FIDE Circuit, he immediately called it 'a stupid system,' claiming he could just win some random open with a 2900 performance. Only later did he realise you can't earn many points in weekly tournaments – he simply hadn't read the rules properly. I suspect the same happened here.'

Williams and the 23-year-old Baptiste defeated Eugenie Bouchard and Clervie Ngounoue 6–3, 6–1 to advance to the quarter-finals of the tournament.
