Majlis discusses sustainability and circular economy in UAE

Dubai: The UAE's high-ranking government officials, business leaders and academics discussed key topics related to sustainability, circular economy and renewable energy during a Ramadan Majlis.
Yousif Bin Saeed Lootah hosted the the Ramadan Majlis recently at Yousif Bin Saeed Lootah's Residence in Dubai.
The Majlis featured the participation of Engineer Saif Ghubash, Assistant Undersecretary for Petroleum, Gas, and Mineral Resources Affairs at the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure; Ali Khalifa Al Shamsi, Director General of Emirates General Petroleum Corporation (Emarat); Engineer Amal Al Ali, Director of Petroleum and Gas Affairs at the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure; Engineer Safa Bani Rashid, Head of Sustainability at Dubai Municipality; Engineer Saeed Amiri and Engineer Faisal Al Qahtani from Emirates National Oil Company (ENOC); and Engineer Ahmed Zangerli and Engineer Kim Benfield from RAK Gas. The discussions focused on the latest advancements and initiatives in these fields, with a strong emphasis on innovative solutions that contribute to climate neutrality and reinforce the UAE's circular economy.
A key highlight of the gathering was the Lootah Biofuels UCO collection Initiative, launched in collaboration with the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure. The initiative aims to collect and recycle used cooking oils (UCO), transforming them into sustainable biofuels. Discussions underscored the initiative's importance in advancing the shift toward clean energy and mitigating the environmental impact of improperly discarded cooking oils, which can damage sewage systems and the environment.
As a part of the initiative, designated collection containers will be installed across the UAE to facilitate the collection of used cooking oils, which are then transported to specialized processing facilities and converted into clean and sustainable biofuels. This process not only helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions and enhances energy efficiency but also enables safer disposal of UCO, which usually causes blockages and contamination of sewerages and soil.
Additionally, attendees explored the role of the smart application launched by Lootah Biofuels, which enables individuals and families to request oil collection services directly from their homes. The app also incentivizes participation by offering financial rewards credited to users' digital wallets.
During the session, Yousifbin Saeed Lootah emphasised that the Ramadan Majlis provides a platform for open dialogue on the future of sustainability in the UAE. He stated that the circular economy is no longer a choice but a necessity to ensure a more sustainable future for upcoming generations. Lootah also noted the increasing awareness and engagement in renewable energy and recycling initiatives, expressing optimism about public-private partnerships that will drive these efforts forward.
Engineer Saif Ghubash highlighted the government's commitment to sustainability through strategic policies and regulations. He reaffirmed the government's role in simplifying procedures, facilitating services, and supporting the private sector in implementing national sustainability strategies. He also praised the Ramadan Majlis for fostering constructive discussions that align with the 'Year of the Community' initiative and drive progress toward clean and sustainable energy.
Regarding the Lootah Biofuels Initiative, Ghubash stressed that it reflects the UAE's dedication to accelerating the transition to clean energy. He confirmed that the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure strongly supports such initiatives, which blend innovation with community engagement to achieve the UAE's Net Zero 2050 strategy.
Ali Khalifa Al Shamsi, Director General of Emirates General Petroleum Corporation (Emarat), described the private sector as the primary driver of the UAE's national sustainability strategy. He emphasized that public-private partnerships are key to the UAE's global leadership in sustainability and that raising awareness and encouraging community participation are fundamental to building a circular economy and achieving clean energy goals.
The National Biofuel Policy plays a vital role in diversifying energy sources and providing sustainable fuel alternatives. Studies indicate that switching entirely to biodiesel can reduce the carbon footprint of diesel-powered vehicles by 75%.
As part of its expansion strategy, Lootah Biofuels recently launched its smart application (Lootah Biofuels App) on Android and iOS. This app encourages individuals, businesses, and institutions in the UAE to contribute to recycling used cooking oils into clean energy instead of improper disposal, which poses environmental and public health risks.
The bilingual application, available in Arabic and English, allows users to request oil collection services directly from their homes, receive financial incentives credited to their digital wallet, and use a built-in calculator to track the amount of oil they have contributed, fostering environmental awareness.
The Majlis concluded with a Ramadan Suhoor banquet, offering guests the opportunity to exchange ideas and explore collaborative efforts that support sustainability and the circular economy in the UAE.

Talabat UAE relaunches Summer Together rider initiatives
Dubai, United Arab Emirates: talabat, the leading on-demand delivery platform in the MENA region has relaunched the Summer Together initiative; a continuation of the region's first solar-powered rest areas, launched in 2023 with the Joint Committee of Traffic Safety and the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE), to provide all delivery riders with easily accessible stations to rest, hydrate, and recharge between orders during the summer months. Following on from the success of last year, talabat has partnered with Emarat for the second year in a row, with rest areas strategically placed at key fuel stations across the UAE to ensure accessibility and convenience for delivery riders. This strategic partnership has played a critical role in scaling the summer initiative, reaching more riders across multiple emirates. After first introducing the rest areas in Abu Dhabi in the summer of 2023, and following the positive response to the initiative, the rest areas are now being relaunched in partnership with Abu Dhabi Mobility (AD Mobility) and Abu Dhabi Municipality, under the umbrella of The Joint Committee for Traffic Safety. This next phase will see rest areas rolled out across key rider locations. The self-sufficient smart boxes operate 24/7 and are powered by solar energy with rechargeable batteries, completely eliminating fuel consumption and significantly reducing CO₂ emissions. Riders will enjoy quiet, seated, and air-conditioned rest areas in gas stations across the country, with access to water dispensers, mobile recharge stations, as well as a built-in air pump in the shaded exterior structure to check tire pressure. The initiative has continued to grow year on year with riders across the country benefitting from the collaboration between the private and public sectors. What began as a pilot has now evolved into a successful nationwide effort to support rider well-being during the summer months. Last year, talabat UAE significantly expanded its support for delivery riders during the summer months by contributing to the 10,000+ rest areas across the UAE. These included innovative solutions such as mobile bus units, smart box rest stops, and dedicated spaces provided by vendor partners, talabat mart, and cloud kitchen facilities. The talabat UAE rest areas received more than 462,000 visits from riders, with over 42,650 litres of water distributed. In addition, 100% of the bike fleet was equipped with essential summer kits, including thermal bottles and cooling snoods, reinforcing talabat's commitment to rider wellbeing and safety. MoEI Launches Phase 2 of Zero Bureaucracy Drive to Streamline Services
The Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure has launched the second phase of its Zero Bureaucracy Programme, aimed at transforming government services by cutting red tape, reducing paperwork, and accelerating service delivery across the UAE. UAE advances as global maritime power through system of legislation, investments
The UAE has become a leading global maritime hub, building on a strong record of achievements, progressive legislation, and strategic investments that have made it a model in maritime sustainability, advanced infrastructure, and sound governance. Thanks to its strategic geographic location at the heart of global trade routes, the UAE has become a pivotal logistics hub connecting Eastern and Western markets. The UAE has also played an active role in shaping international maritime policies, contributing strategic proposals to update the legal maritime framework—particularly regarding the prevention of illegal practices related to fraudulent ship registration. The country has taken a leading role in drafting regulatory best practices for autonomous maritime vessels. The UAE boasts one of the most advanced maritime infrastructures in the region. In 2023, the country's ports handled around 21 million TEUs, setting record figures in facilitating trade and the flow of goods. The maritime sector contributed approximately AED135 billion to the national GDP, reflecting the vital economic importance of this sector. The UAE is considered the leading destination for commercial vessels in the region, thanks to its comprehensive services, high operational capabilities, and advanced digital systems that enhance the efficiency of logistics operations. The country has prioritised the development of human capital in the maritime sector, and through the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure and maritime administration experts, has organized specialised training workshops in cooperation with the International Maritime Organisation (IMO). Between 2020 and 2025, six regional workshops were held, in addition to participating in audit missions for several countries, including Egypt, Greece, Malta, and Thailand. The UAE has also established several maritime academies, such as the Sharjah Maritime Academy and the Abu Dhabi Maritime Academy, alongside training programmes at the Higher Colleges of Technology. These institutions have graduated approximately 497 marine officers and engineers, including 100 female officers and engineers—a step that underscores the country's commitment to supporting women's roles in this vital sector. As part of its environmental commitment, the UAE has announced its Net Zero 2050 Strategy and has been a pioneer in implementing sustainable solutions within the maritime sector. Fujairah Port stands as a regional model for supplying ships with low-sulfur clean fuel and also offers liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering services, in alignment with the MARPOL Convention to prevent air pollution from ships. Moreover, the UAE has joined the Global Ports Hydrogen Coalition and the Green Shipping Corridors Alliance. The UAE is also among the leading developers of digital and smart systems in the maritime shipping sector. It has launched pioneering projects such as Blue Pass, Maqta Gateway, BoxBay intelligent container storage system, and CargoSpeed, along with container loading automation systems used in Abu Dhabi and Dubai ports. These advanced technologies contribute to reducing carbon emissions, improving supply chain efficiency, and offering a comprehensive model for logistical automation. UAE companies have extended their maritime sector investments to over 78 countries, contributing to the development of ports and maritime terminals, building global trade bridges, and advancing automation and digitalisation in global shipping. The number of ports operated by UAE national entities worldwide has reached 106, reflecting the country's advanced logistical position and its pivotal role in connecting global markets. The UAE has aligned its national strategy with the objectives of IMO and has declared its full support for decarbonising maritime transport. The country has also contributed to funding a dedicated IMO trust fund aimed at helping island and developing nations participate in IMO meetings, reinforcing the principles of inclusivity and equity. The UAE has actively participated in the IMO's regular meetings and has submitted significant initiatives to advance international regulations and standards. The country now seeks to renew its membership in the IMO Council to continue its vital role as a flag state, port state, coastal state, and a major global energy supplier. The UAE has transformed into a global convenor for international conferences and exhibitions in the maritime and logistics sectors, such as UAE Maritime Week, Breakbulk Middle East, and ADIPEC. These events aim to foster innovation and drive global dialogue on the future of sustainable maritime transport. The UAE has also actively participated in COP conferences and BRICS meetings focused on port decarbonisation, using these platforms to reaffirm its leadership role in shaping a low-emission maritime future. Suhail bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, said, "The UAE is confidently progressing toward becoming a global maritime power, thanks to the vision of our wise leadership and the efforts of all those working in this sector. Today, we are accelerating the transition to a more sustainable and intelligent maritime transport system, reinforcing our position as a key contributor in shaping the future of global shipping." He added, "We are currently working to support the integration of digitalisation and sustainability across all aspects of the sector—whether through legislative frameworks or the adoption of advanced technologies such as autonomous ships. This reflects our commitment to enhancing the efficiency of maritime operations while achieving environmental sustainability. The UAE believes that innovation is the engine of the future, and we are ready to share our knowledge with the international community in pursuit of shared goals." He continued, "Our membership in the IMO Council is a responsibility that stems from our ongoing commitment to best practices and our dedication to sharing our expertise and supporting other nations in building a safe and advanced maritime sector. Hassan Al Mansouri, Under-Secretary for Infrastructure and Transport Affairs at the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, stated, 'The maritime sector is one of the strategic pillars of the UAE's vision to build an integrated, sustainable, and smart transportation system, aligned with the nation's direction toward a diversified economy based on knowledge and advanced technologies.
