Tributes pour in for Sumo Salad owner Jane Lee; MOM investigating alleged fake workplace injury claim

SINGAPORE: Since Jane Lee passed away on Jul 19 (Saturday), many online expressed not only shock and grief but also honoured the owner of Sumo Salad, describing her as 'one of the kindest' women they have ever met.
Ms Lee, a mother of two young children, was in her 40s when she passed away.
Prior to her death, she posted on Facebook about a workplace injury case in which a Sumo Salad employee allegedly staged an accident two days before her contract ended. The employee was said to have carried out the scheme with her husband and with the help of a firm that Ms Lee claimed 'coaches individuals on how to exploit injury claims for compensation.'
'To the Singapore Ministry of Manpower (MOM) and Singapore Police Force , I respectfully urge you to investigate this case thoroughly. I fear that I will not be the last victim, and these individuals may continue to exploit other unsuspecting small businesses in similar ways,' she wrote in her final Facebook post, dated Jul 17.
On Monday (Jul 21), the MOM extended condolences to Ms Lee's family and said it was looking into the alleged fraudulent work injury claim. The ministry added that the employee was covered under the Work Injury Compensation (WIC) Act and that it is working with the insurer to assess the validity of the case.
'MOM will not hesitate to take parties found culpable for abusing the WIC system to task. Employers can approach MOM for help if they have concerns over fraudulent claims by their employees,' it said.
Honouring Ms Lee
Food guru and Makansutra founder KF Seetoh wrote in a Facebook post that he had met Ms Lee twice.
'She did not come on with such warmth (and) sincerity with the hope of getting publicity from me… Just potentially as a good friend.
'I don't know what really happened but no healthy person dies a day after putting up a desperate n help seeking post. RIP Jane and God bless your soul.'
Melvin Chew, the owner of Teochew Braised Duck and Kway Chap stall at Chinatown Complex Food Centre and founder of the Hawkers United-Dabao 2020 Facebook group, wrote, 'Jane is one of the kindest lady who I know, whenever there are post on hawkers or people in need of help she will (initiate) to help. My Deepest condolences to Jane's family.'
'Jane was kind and big-hearted. Her magnanimity was endearing. In everything, she thought, spoke, and did to others as she would have them think, speak, or do to her. This was her life's principle. The tenet that guided her walk in life. In fact, there was so much to admire about Jane. She did what she loved — to serve up healthy and delicious food. She was a beacon of assurance and hope. Whenever she saw a need, she would do her best to meet it. She was artful in running her business and gave back to the elderly and less privileged in society. She was one of us. The big tent of small business owners in Singapore,' reads another Facebook post .
Many others are calling for justice for Ms. Lee and hoping for better protection for business owners who find themselves in the same situation.
On Reddit, others have spoken about the stresses of being in the food and beverage industry. See also Cycling path expansion for e-scooters may take "a couple of years"
' Sad. It is stressful enough to raise kids. What more be a f&b owner?' wrote one.
' I think this topic needs to enter public discourse, on social media, and, overall, more light needs to be shed on this ,' chimed in another.
'The authorities need to get to the bottom of this matter. Otherwise, it would blow up and cause a big headache for MOM. If that worker did indeed fake an injury claim, then she and her accomplices need to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of our laws. Singapore has a reputation for being tough on crime. We need to send a very clear message to such people,' opined a Reddit user.
'Now that MOM has acknowledged and responded to this, it will be better if there is a rule or framework to prevent those parasites from harming SG F&B industry,' another commenter wrote. /TISG

Xavi application for India coaching job was a hoax, AIFF says

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) confirmed on Saturday that a job application attributed to former Barcelona manager and Spain midfielder Xavi Hernandez for the India head coaching role was a hoax. The AIFF's national team director told The Times of India on Thursday that Xavi's name was on the list of applicants. The report also quoted an AIFF technical committee member saying the his candidacy was deemed too expensive to pursue. "The AIFF received an email furnishing the applications from Spanish coaches Pep Guardiola and Xavi Hernandez. The authenticity of their applications could not be confirmed, and it has since emerged that the email applications were not genuine," the AIFF said in a statement. It had not been previously reported that the AIFF had also received an application purporting to be from Manchester City manager Guardiola. The AIFF Technical Committee said it had reviewed 170 applications for the Indian men's head coach role, narrowing the list to 10 before short-listing three candidates. The AIFF sacked former India manger Igor Stimac in June last year before appointing Spaniard Manolo Marquez, who left the job this month and returned to his role as coach of Indian Super League team FC Goa.

Thailand accuses Cambodia of avoiding 'meaningful dialogue' as border conflict rages on

BANGKOK: Thailand has accused Cambodia of deliberately avoiding 'meaningful dialogue' to resolve a violent conflict between the two countries, as deadly cross-border attacks and mounting civilian casualties escalate the worst bout of fighting in years. Thailand's ambassador to the United Nations (UN) Cherdchai Chaivaivid told a closed-door UN Security Council meeting on Friday (Jul 25) that Phnom Penh had rebuffed efforts at dialogue. 'It is deeply regrettable that Cambodia has deliberately avoided meaningful dialogue and instead sought to internationalise the issue to serve its own political objectives,' said Cherdchai. Thailand's foreign ministry published a statement of his remarks online on Saturday morning. 'Thailand urges Cambodia to immediately cease all hostilities and acts of aggression, and resume dialogue in good faith,' the ambassador said. He added that Thailand has 'actively engaged' Cambodia over the past two months through multiple bilateral mechanisms, including a so-called Joint Boundary Commission after a late-May skirmish that resulted in the death of a Cambodian soldier. After the UN Security Council in New York, Cambodia's UN ambassador Chhea Keo said his country wanted a ceasefire. "Cambodia asked for an immediate ceasefire - unconditionally - and we also call for the peaceful solution of the dispute," Keo told reporters. "UNLAWFUL AND INDISCRIMINATE" More than 30 people have been killed in the worst fighting between the Southeast Asian neighbours in 13 years. Both countries have accused each other of starting the conflict, which boiled over drastically on Thursday. According to Cherdchai, Cambodia started the conflict on Thursday, asserting that Cambodian artillery opened fire on a Thai military outpost Ta Muen Thom, Surin province, followed by troops carrying out 'indiscriminate attacks' on four Thai provinces. 'This act of aggression, unlawful and indiscriminate - and let me stress the word indiscriminate - armed attacks have caused serious harms and sufferings to innocent civilians,' he said. Cherdchai showed pictures of civilian casualties to the Security Council, according to the Thai foreign ministry statement. The ambassador accused Cambodia of 'indiscriminate and inhumane attacks' on civilians, civilian infrastructure and public facilities such as hospitals, saying they violated the Geneva Convention and UN Charter. The ambassador said Thailand had exercised 'utmost restraint' but was now compelled to act in self-defence following deadly cross-border shelling, landmine incidents and mounting civilian casualties. In Thursday's clashes, Cambodia fired rockets and artillery shells into Thailand, and the Thai military scrambled F-16 jets to carry out air strikes. The ambassador said Thailand 'categorically rejects' the use of force to resolve international disputes, while remaining firmly committed to the peaceful settlement of disputes. Thailand has accused Cambodia of deliberately attacking civilians, while Phnom Penh has criticised Bangkok for using cluster munitions, controversial and widely condemned. Cherdchai acknowledged that cluster munitions were deployed, but said that they were used 'exclusively to target military objectives'. 'All measures are directed at legitimate military targets, with every effort made to avoid civilian harm,' Cherdchai said, adding that Thailand's response was 'strictly limited in scope, proportionate and targeted solely at neutralising the imminent danger.' The ambassador also rebuffed accusations by Phnom Penh that Thailand attacked the surrounding area and structures of Preah Vihear Temple. Fighting on Thursday was focused on six locations, according to the Thai army, including around two ancient temples. Cherdchai said the Cambodian assertions were 'baseless, regrettable and profoundly disappointing', and amounted to a 'dissemination of disinformation'. According to Phnom Penh's defence ministry, the death toll in Cambodia has risen to 13 - five soldiers and eight civilians - with more than 35,000 people forced to flee their homes. On the Thai side, its health ministry reported 15 fatalities - 14 civilians and a soldier - with a further 46 wounded, including 15 troops. The ministry also said more than 138,000 people have been evacuated from its border regions.
