Chennai: State selection committee said there will be delays in the start of counselling for MBBS/BDS admissions as Centre's medical counselling committee has put the process for the first round of admission on hold. On Monday, when the first round was already in progress, the committee announced that "choice filling and choice locking for round-1 has been put on hold." State selection committee officials said they were neither informed about this nor given a revised schedule until Tuesday. "We will not be able to start the counselling unless Centre completes round-1," said a senior official at the directorate. Central committee conducts counselling for 15% of all India quota seats in state-run medical colleges across the country, Central govt institutions, and deemed universities. "The students will take seats allotted to them in the round-1 of all India counselling if they get a seat of their choice. When it makes changes, there is no information or instructions given to state," the official said. According to the revised schedule, round-1 registration deadline is 3pm on Wednesday, and payments must be made by 6pm. The choice filling and locking window will close by 8pm on Aug 7. MCC will process seats for round-1 until Aug 8 and declare results by Aug 9. Students have till Aug 18 to report to colleges. Officials say state committee will process seats and declare results this week to allow students to make informed decisions.

Six aircraft engine shutdown incidents reported this year: Civil Aviation Ministry
NEW DELHI: A total of six aircraft engine shutdown incidents and three incidents of May Day calls have been reported so far this year, according to the civil aviation ministry. As per data shared by Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol with the Rajya Sabha, there have been two incidents of engine shutdown, each involving IndiGo and SpiceJet, while Air India and Alliance Air had one such incident each. There have been three incidents of May Day Call, including for the Air India aircraft operating the London Gatwick-bound flight AI 171 that crashed into a building soon after take off from Ahmedabad on June 12. IndiGo and Air India Express also had one incident each of May Day Call. A pilot repeats May Day thrice to clearly communicate with the air traffic controller on the ground that the aircraft is in a life-threatening situation and needs urgent help.

State deploys ‘Gaja Mitras' to tackle human-jumbo conflicts
1 2 Guwahati: In a decisive move to address the escalating human-elephant conflict, the state govt has launched the Gaja Mitra initiative, deploying rapid response teams across 80 conflict zones in eight districts. These teams, comprising local villagers, will be active during the peak winter season, aiming to curb the alarming rates of human and elephant fatalities. The 80 identified human-elephant conflict "hotspots" are in eight districts — Goalpara, Udalguri, Nagaon, Baksa, Sonitpur, Golaghat, Jorhat, and Biswanath. Assam has witnessed over 1,400 human and 1,209 elephant deaths from such conflicts between 2000 and 2023, marking one of the highest tolls nationwide. The initiative follows a critical report from the Wildlife Institute of India, highlighting a crisis driven by habitat loss, electrocution, railway accidents, and retaliatory killings. The scheme focuses on voluntary, community-driven surveillance and response, ensuring that those most familiar with the landscape and patterns of elephant movement can respond quickly and effectively. The official added that to discourage elephants from entering villages and farmlands, the scheme includes the creation and restoration of local elephant habitats stocked with their preferred food, such as bamboo and Napier grass. Apart from the Gaja Mitra scheme, NFR is carrying out the installation of an AI-enabled Intrusion Detection System (IDS) to detect the movement of elephants on the train lines so that the speed of the trains can be controlled to protect the elephants. The Habaipur-Lumding section and the Kamakhya-Mirza section of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) are the two sections where the Railways have completed the installation of the AI-enabled IDS and started its operation to detect the movement of elephants on the train lines. NFR Chief Public Relation Officer Kapinjal Kishore Sharma said that the installation of the AI-enabled IDS has started in four more railway sections in Jorhat, Dhekiajuli, North Lakhimpur, and Goalpara district.
