Workers race against the clock to fix OMR cave-in
Old Mahabalipuram Road
(OMR) near Thiruvanmiyur junction on Monday morning may face traffic delays, as workers race overnight to complete repairs on a massive cave-in that disrupted the arterial corridor on Saturday night.
Though the barricaded portion may be narrowed to 4–5m by the morning, movement through this stretch, which connects Thiruvanmiyur with Taramani, will be affected.
Over the weekend, Tamil Nadu Road Development Corporation (TNRDC) and Metrowater engineers worked 36 straight hours to contain the damage after a car fell into a six-foot-deep crater on Saturday, injuring five passengers. The vehicle was lifted out around 9pm, after which officials began excavation and diagnostics.
The cave-in was traced to the sudden failure of a 2.2m-diameter prestressed cement concrete (PSC) sewage pipeline laid nearly two decades ago. Unlike modern ductile iron or High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) pipes, PSC pipes rely on a tensioned steel framework embedded in concrete, and their brittle nature makes them prone to sudden breaks under stress or age-related wear.
In this case, the failure occurred at a weak joint located roughly three metres below road level — deeper than previous minor bursts reported at Kasturba Nagar and Indira Nagar.
Engineers first had to safely access the sewer chamber, ventilating it to mitigate the risk of poisonous gas exposure before clearing out a sludge-heavy sewage-mud mix with earthmovers. "On Sunday afternoon, they began installing reinforcement sheets over the damaged portion. However, sourcing compatible materials proved difficult, as PSC pipes are no longer manufactured widely and prefabricated sheets of the same grade are not readily available," said a senior highway engineer.
By Sunday night, the team planned to grout concrete-mix into the void to stabilize the road base. This would allow partial reopening for Monday. But full relaying of the road will be deferred by at least two days, pending leak monitoring and structural settlement checks. If stable, final relaying is expected to begin by Tuesday.

Ofcom has received over 1000 complaints about ITV reality show Love Island, with many viewers outraged over Yasmin and Ben's row last week. Last week saw 23-year-old taxi driver Ben clash with Yasmin, 24, in a heated row, with viewers calling his behaviour "disgusting" and "immature". According to Ofcom, the dating show received 884 complaints on Thursday about a fiery argument between Yasmin and Ben, while the next day, another 131 viewers went to the regulator over Helena and Harrison's kiss in the Hideaway. Ofcom revealed in a statement that the complaints were related to a "combination of alleged bullying and misogynistic behaviour by a number of contestants, including Ben, Meg and Helen". After Ben told Shakira that he never had real feelings for Yasmin and she found out, Yasmin confronted him over his comments, telling him that it "wasn't the Ben show" and that the "world doesn't revolve around him". The argument then took a turn, with Ben shouting at Yasmin: "This is amazing just given Love Island three weeks of content." He added that "no man wants you in here" and said: "Yasmin is the most irrelevant girl I've ever met."

At least 70 towns and city centres have branches of both banks currently operating less than a mile apart Santander is buying rival bank TSB - and our map reveals the two-bank towns which could now be most at risk of branch closures. Analysis of company data shows that there are at least 70 towns and city centres around the UK where both banks currently operate branches less than a mile apart. In Bolton there are Santander and TSB branches right next door to one another in the town's main Deansgate shopping area. Many other town centres currently have a TSB branch just a short walk away from a Santander competitor, raising fears that they may be first in line for closure under the merger. The £2.65 billion deal which Santander has agreed to acquire the TSB Banking Group could eventually see the TSB name disappear from the High Street. TSB - originally known as Trustee Savings Bank - has served the nation's banking needs for well over 200 years. The bank was founded in a village near Dumfries in 1810, but Dumfries is among the locations where the TSB branch is just a minute's walk away from a Santander outlet. The deal depends on approval from Sabadell's shareholders and the UK regulator, but if it does go ahead, Santander says it 'intends to integrate TSB in the Santander group'. This could mean the remaining TSB branches rebranded as Santander - although nothing has been confirmed yet. Santander has not yet revealed if there will be any closures. Our analysis identified 70 locations where both banks currently compete for customers with Bolton the closest branches. It was only three years ago that TSB opened its branch on Deansgate right next door to the town's Santander. Over the border in Scotland, in Kilmarnock, just three other shops and an alleyway separate the TSB from the Santander on King Street. The takeover comes at a time when more banks are closing than ever before. Since 2022, when a voluntary agreement saw the major banking groups commit to assessing the impact of every closure, almost 2,000 branches have vanished from UK high streets, including branches of TSB and Santander.
