Formation of WTT India will lead to the country hosting more international events

The Hindu18-06-2025
In a major boost to the table tennis ecosystem in India, the World Table Tennis (WTT) — the events' arm of the International Table Tennis Federation — has formed WTT India, with an eye on hosting more high-profile world-ranking events in the country.
India has joined a select group of countries like China, Singapore, Japan, Germany and the US to have domestic WTT event companies.
A. Sharath Kamal, who retired earlier this year, has come aboard as the brand ambassador of WTT India, while Vita Dani, the co-promoter of franchise-based league Ultimate Table Tennis and an ITTF governing council member, will join as a member of the board of directors.
'You will start to see more WTT events and more international events. Eventually, in the next few years, you will start to see some of our bigger events coming here, whether that's Champions, we will explore Smash in the future as well.
'Although it's a different road to get that, hopefully even World Championships and big events on that scale,' Steve Dainton, Group CEO of ITTF, told The Hindu.
'Having people that are working day to day on World Table Tennis will help us achieve that quicker than having just us based out of Singapore trying to make it happen.'
Sharath was excited to be a part of the project. 'This moment feels like the turning of a page. The sport has come so far in India, and now, with WTT officially here, we have the chance to elevate it like never before,' he said. 'I am proud to represent this next phase — not just as a player, but as someone who truly believes in the potential of Indian table tennis.'
India at present hosts two annual WTT events, a Star Contender and a Youth Contender series tournament. The number is likely to double in the next 12-month cycle with the new partnership.
'We only have to grow from here. I am hoping that we as a country are able to host (the) 2036 Games and if that is the case, then this would be an ideal roadmap to lead up to the Olympics in India. I don't think we can ask for a better opportunity than this or a better partnership than this as far as table tennis is concerned,' Vita said.
'As you have seen, India has done exceedingly well in the last seven to eight years, better than ever before. For us to really ensure that we tap into the right talent, we get the right champions ahead, the WTT partnership will bring a lot of value to us and I think it's important for us as a country to have a partnership like this.'

PM Modi gifts Bidriware Vases to Ghana President

Accra (Ghana), July 3 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi today gifted a pair of exquisite Bidriware flower vases to Ghanaian President John Mahama, highlighting India's deep-rooted cultural heritage and the exceptional artistry of Karnataka's famed metalcraft tradition. The handcrafted vases, originating from Bidar in Karnataka, are fashioned from a zinc-copper alloy and inlaid with intricate silver floral motifs. They represent the centuries-old Bidriware tradition, a unique metalworking technique known for its striking black finish achieved using a special soil treatment native to the region. Each piece is a blend of Bahamani Sultanate era design inspiration and contemporary aesthetic sensibilities, symbolising harmony and craftsmanship that spans generations. The gesture reflects more than diplomatic courtesy; it signifies India's commitment to preserving and promoting indigenous handicrafts on the global stage. Bidriware, once patronised by royalty, has seen fluctuating fortunes in recent decades. The Prime Minister's choice to present it as a state gift marks a deliberate and strategic use of cultural diplomacy. The gifting of Bidriware on an international platform is expected to rejuvenate interest in the art form and spark a market revival, bringing direct economic benefits to the artisans of Bidar. Increased visibility can lead to greater demand, improved livelihoods, and long-term sustainability for the craftsmen who have kept this tradition alive for over 500 years. Furthermore, the move is significant in terms of heritage preservation. When recognised at such high levels of diplomacy, traditional crafts gain a new level of prestige, encouraging younger generations and institutions to explore, document, and learn these skills. It opens doors for vocational training, government support, and craft school engagement. From a broader perspective, the gifting of such artefacts reflects India's expanding global cultural footprint. As Indian leaders use indigenous art to build goodwill, it subtly projects India's soft power, framing the nation not just as an economic and geopolitical player, but also as a guardian of civilisational richness and artistic legacy. In selecting Bidriware for President Mahama, Prime Minister Modi offered more than a gift — he extended a piece of India's soul, its storytelling in metal and silver, and its enduring respect for the hands that shape heritage. D Gukesh defeats Magnus Carlsen in Croatia Rapid; registers fifth consecutive win

D Gukesh defeated World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen in the sixth round of the Grand Chess Tournament in Zagreb, Croatia on Thursday (July 3). With this win Gukesh, the 19-year-old Indian grandmaster claimed the sole lead with 10 points. D Gukesh entered the sixth round as the joint leader after an impressive performance on the opening day. His momentum continued in the fourth and fifth rounds, where he secured victories against Uzbekistan's Nodirbek Abdusattorov and American Fabiano Caruana, two of the world's top players. D Gukesh's win was especially significant given Carlsen's pre-match comments. Before the match, Magnus Carlsen, known for his psychological approach to chess, made headlines with his remarks about Gukesh. The Norwegian grandmaster, a five-time world champion, suggested that Gukesh had yet to prove himself in the rapid format. 'I think Gukesh played quite well here last time, but it remains to be proven that he's one of the best players in this format,' Carlsen said. He added, 'Gukesh hasn't done anything to [show] that he's going to do well in such a tournament. I hope, for his sake, that he can do better. But playing him in this tournament, I will approach it as if I'm playing one of the presumably weaker players.' The sixth-round clash was the first of three scheduled encounters between Gukesh and Carlsen in Zagreb. While Thursday's match was played in the rapid format, the upcoming meetings will tak place in the blitz format. In the format, players have even less time to make their moves. Blitz chess demands fast decision-making skills. These matches will be critical in determining whether Gukesh can maintain his lead and further cement his dominance in the tournament. D Gukesh's victory over Carlsen is a milestone for Indian chess. At just 19, Gukesh has already claimed the world championship title and is now challenging the game's biggest names on the global stage. His performance in Zagreb highlights the rise of Indian chess, with players like Viswanathan Anand and Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu paving the way for this new generation. As the tournament progresses, all eyes will be on Gukesh to see if he can maintain his lead and beat the top players.

India-US interim trade deal nearly sealed after a week of intense talks

After nearly a week of intense negotiations, India and the United States (US) are learnt to have almost finalised an interim trade deal, mainly focusing on tariff concessions. An announcement is expected over the next two-three days, ahead of the looming expiry of the US's 90-day pause on country-specific reciprocal tariff deadline, people aware of the matter told Business Standard. Indian officials are also closely studying the US' trade agreement with Vietnam announced by President Donald Trump on Wednesday, especially since the South-East Asian nation is a significant regional competitor for India in manufacturing and exports.
