Punjab: Mehron's provisional arrest in UAE likely soon, say police officials

Hindustan Times14-07-2025
Religious vigilante Amritpal Singh Mehron, wanted in the murder of digital content creator Kanchan Kumari in Bathinda and currently hiding in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), is likely to be subjected to a provisional arrest soon with the assistance of Interpol, police officials have said. Amritpal Singh Mehron has been hiding in the UAE since he allegedly murdered a social media influencer, Kanchan Kumari
Official sources said Interpol, an international organisation which facilitates police cooperation among its 196 member countries, is inching towards executing the state police's request to detain Mehron in the Gulf country. Responding to queries of HT, the Interpol press office stated early this month that it could not share any input on its investigation as only the member country concerned could make any comment.
Meanwhile, the sources, wishing not to be named, confirmed that the Bureau of Investigation (BoI) is working closely with the home ministry to extradite Mehron from the UAE. Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Amneet Kondal said on Sunday that the district police had filed a pro forma for a 'blue notice' on June 20 to track and extradite Mehron back to Punjab to face a trial in the murder of Kanchan. 'We are working on his extradition and sending the required information and details sought by the Interpol. But details cannot be made public at this stage,' she added.
The SSP clarified that they have not been updated yet whether Interpol has issued a notice against Mehron. Officials said the location of Mehron in the UAE is still unclear and Interpol has a crucial role in tracing and putting him under detention. 'Extradition is a complex legal exercise and the state and central authorities are engaged in executing the detention of Mehron on foreign soil,' said the senior police official.
As per the police, Kanchan Kumari, alias Kamal Kaur Bhabhi, of Ludhiana was strangulated by Mehron and his two Nihang accomplices, stating that the murder was motivated by Kanchan's controversial social media posts, which allegedly offended the Sikh community. The murder took place on the night of June 9-10 when Mehron, along with Jaspreet Singh and Nimratjit Singh, allegedly strangled Kanchan in her car. They later dumped her body in the parking lot of Adesh Medical College and Hospital in Bhucho, Bathinda.
The victim's body was discovered on the evening of June 11, and the police termed the crime as unauthorised moral policing. Mehron fled to Amritsar shortly after the murder, boarding an international flight to the UAE on the morning of June 10.
Jaspreet and Nimratjit are in judicial custody, whereas the three accused, including Mehron, are still at large. SSP Kondal said that immediately after the murder, Mehron was taken from Bathinda to the international airport in Amritsar by Ranjit Singh of Taran Tarn and an unidentified person.
'Our teams will resume raids to nab Ranjit and identify another accused. A lookout circular (LoC) has already been issued against Ranjit to ensure he does not flee the country,' said the SSP.

Mamata Banerjee angered by Delhi police mention of ‘Bangladeshi language', BJP reacts

'Scandalous, insulting, anti‑national, and unconstitutional" is how Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee described an August 3 letter by the Delhi police that called Bengali, or Bangla, a 'Bangladeshi language'. Chief minister Mamata Banerjee at a function in Kolkata.(HT File Photo) The Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader, sharing an image of the letter on X, emphasised that Bengali is sanctified by the Indian Constitution, and the mother tongue of icons like Rabindranath Tagore and Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay. The police had purportedly written to Banga Bhawan, West Bengal's state guest house in New Delhi, seeking assistance with translating documents written in 'Bangladeshi language' for eight individuals suspected of being illegal immigrants from Bangladesh. HT has not independently verified the authenticity of the letter, while police have not yet responded. The image shared by Banerjee showed that the letter, dated July 24, said police needed an interpreter 'proficient in Bangladeshi national language' for documents belonging to the eight persons 'strongly suspected to be Bangladeshi nationals residing illegally in India'. TMC national general secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee demanded an apology from home minister Amit Shah, under whose ministry Delhi Police falls, for the way the letter was written. 'For months now, Bengali-speaking people have been targeted, harassed and detained across BJP-ruled states,' he added, and called the letter 'a shocking escalation' and an attempt to 'undermine Bengali identity' and "equate Indian Bengalis with foreigners'. Reacting to the allegations, Samik Bhattacharya, the West Bengal BJP chief, accused the TMC of resorting to 'fear-mongering tactics' for Indian Bengalis while 'shielding' illegal immigrants. BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya reacted, too, accusing Mamata Banerjee of spreading misinformation for 'vote‑bank politics'. He called her X post 'a badly scripted political stunt'. Bengali artists were incensed by the notice too. "Bangla referred to as Bangladeshi language... Exactly the kind of ignorance I expect from the people responsible... Not surprised at all," wrote singer Surojit Chatterjee. "That's not Bangladeshi language… that's Bangla or Bengali," film director Srijit Mukherji posted on X, 'the same language in which your national anthem was originally written and one of the 22 official languages of India.'

8.5 lakh govt jobs given in 8 years, 2.17 lakh recruited in police: Yogi

As many as 8.5 lakh government jobs were given to the youth of the state in the past eight years, chief minister Yogi Adityanath said on Sunday. Chief minister Yogi Adityanath distributed appointment letters to 1,374 assistant operators and 120 workshop staff selected for the UP Police telecommunications department. (HT Photo) The police department saw the highest recruitment, with 2,17,500 young people joining the force since 2017, he said while addressing the appointment letter distribution ceremony for 1,494 newly selected assistant operators in UP Police telecom department. 'Before 2017, nepotism in police recruitment weakened law and order in the state and corruption dominated the recruitment process in the state. Under previous governments, recruitment was marred by bribery and bias, ruining the future of the youth,' he stressed. 'Post-2017, police recruitment reflects transparency and public trust, not just numbers,' he added. He recalled how past practices led to riots, terrorist attacks and a climate of fear, citing incidents in Ayodhya, Kashi, Lucknow and Rampur. He personally handed over letters to several recruits during the event at Indira Gandhi Pratishthan. 'After the double-engine government came to power in 2017, the first major step was to make the recruitment process transparent and fair. The Police Recruitment Board was strengthened as part of this effort. As a result, Uttar Pradesh now ranks first in the country for police recruitment and providing government jobs,' he added. The CM added that transparency in recruitment also boosted investments, creating local employment opportunities for nearly 2 crore youth in their own districts. With support from outsourcing, technology, and policy-making, Uttar Pradesh has now emerged as one of India's fastest-growing economies, he said. He also highlighted that when the first recruitment was conducted in 2017-18, the state had very limited training capacity. Earlier, only around 3,000 police personnel could be trained, but now training arrangements for 60,244 recruits are being managed within UP Police's own training institutes. In the past eight years, police lines, headquarters, and residential facilities in Uttar Pradesh expanded rapidly, he said. The long-pending police commissionerate system, pending since 1971-72, was implemented by the double-engine government and seven new commissionerates have been created so far, improving both modern policing and accountability, he asserted. The chief minister said that UP Police at present has become a model force, symbolising a riot-free, law-abiding and safe state. He highlighted the Mahakumbh as an example of the police force's dedication and sensitivity, where their commitment and conduct ensured the event's success. He reminded the police that people notice not just their work, but also their behaviour. To ensure women's participation, 20% reservation has been implemented in the police force. Out of 1,494 candidates selected for the telecom department, around 300 are women, and this number will increase further in the future. He further said, '20% reservation will be given to Agniveer recruits in the Uttar Pradesh Police. This decision will allow trained and disciplined youth to join the police force.' Praising the telecom department's excellent work during the Mahakumbh, he said communication is the backbone of any police force. The CM said that as India moves towards becoming the world's third-largest economy in the Amrit Kaal of independence, the police must be both sensitive and strict. Uttar Pradesh finance and parliamentary affairs minister Suresh Khanna, principal secretary (Home) Sanjay Prasad, DGP Rajeev Krishna, DG Telecom Ashutosh Pandey, DG Recruitment Board S.D. Shirodkar and DG PHQ Anand Swaroop were present on the occasion.
