PM Modi Set To Attend BRICS Summit In Brazil; Vladimir Putin And Xi Jinping To Skip
Last Updated:
This year's BRICS Summit is scheduled to take place in Brazil on 6-7 July. Prime Minister Modi is also expected to hold several bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the summit
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will participate in the upcoming BRICS Summit, which will be held in Brazil next week. However, the absence of two major global leaders from this important international platform has already become a topic of discussion. Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping will not attend this year's BRICS Summit in person. Russia will be represented by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, while Premier Li Qiang will represent China.
BRICS—an acronym for Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—has now expanded into a larger organisation with five new members added, bringing the total membership to ten. This year's BRICS Summit is scheduled to take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on 6–7 July. Prime Minister Modi is also expected to hold several bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the summit.
Why Are Putin and Xi Skipping The Summit?
Russian President Vladimir Putin is avoiding the visit due to an arrest warrant issued against him by the International Criminal Court (ICC). As Brazil is a signatory to the ICC, Putin would risk arrest if he entered the country.
Chinese President Xi Jinping will also skip the BRICS Summit for the first time. While no official reason has been provided, sources indicate internal factors behind his decision.
BRICS is an informal grouping of non-Western countries. In addition to attending the 17th BRICS Summit in Brazil, PM Modi will also visit Ghana, Trinidad, Argentina, and Namibia.
In the second leg of his tour, at the invitation of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, Kamla Persad-Bissessar, PM Modi will pay an Official Visit to Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) from 3–4 July. This will be his first visit to the country as Prime Minister, and the first bilateral Prime Ministerial visit to T&T since 1999. He is also expected to address a Joint Session of the T&T Parliament.
In the third leg, at the invitation of Argentine President Javier Milei, the Prime Minister will undertake an Official Visit to Argentina from 4–5 July.
In the fourth leg, at the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the Prime Minister will travel to Brazil from 5–8 July to attend the BRICS Summit.
In the final leg of the trip, at the invitation of Namibian President Dr Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, PM Modi will embark on a State Visit to Namibia on 9 July.

India ancient living civilisation due to immortal ideas of seers: PM Modi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Saturday India is the most ancient living civilisation of the world due to the immortal ideas and philosophies of its saints and seers. Speaking at the centenary celebrations of Jain spiritual figure Acharya Vidyanand Maharaj's birth anniversary here, PM Modi paid rich tributes to his contribution in different fields and asserted that his ideas have inspired the government's welfare schemes. Be it providing house, drinking water or health insurance, the government is ensuring saturation coverage of its welfare measures so that no one is left behind, he said. PM Modi also referred to the preceding speech of a Jain seer, noting that he was apparently blessing Operation Sindoor. The prime minister's mere mention of "Jo humein chhedega" brought massive cheers from the audience but he did not dwell any further on the issue. He said India introduced the world to the strength of "ahimsa" (non-violence) when it used violence to quell violence for thousands of years. He said his government has vowed to rid the country of "slavery mindset". He reiterated his nine pledges and urged people to follow them. The pledges are: saving water, planting a tree in mother's memory, cleanliness, going 'vocal for local', travelling to explore different places in the country, adopting natural farming, having a healthy lifestyle, sports and yoga adoption, and helping the poor.

Serbia's NIS receives further sanctions reprieve from US
Serbia's largest energy producer was spared sanctions by the United States for another month on Friday, extending an early reprieve for the majority Russian-owned firm. NIS, which operates the country's only oil refinery, said in a statement to AFP that the US government had agreed to delay sanctions - first announced in January as part of Washington's crackdown on the Russian energy sector. "The US Department of the Treasury has issued a new special license postponing the full implementation of sanctions," NIS said. Majority owned by energy giant Gazprom, the company has now managed to negotiate four extensions to avoid a broad package of sanctions originally due to begin in February. The sanctions are now due to come into effect on July 29, NIS said. If implemented, these sanctions would require the complete withdrawal of Russian interests and the sale of their shares -- or nationalisation. Introduced by former US president Joe Biden, the measure was aimed at throttling the flow of profits from the lucrative sector to Moscow following its invasion of Ukraine. Serbia has maintained a close relationship with Russia since the invasion and refuses to impose sanctions, unlike the European Union that it hopes to join. Serbia relies heavily on Russian gas supplies, provided by NIS. The contract between Belgrade and Moscow, signed in spring 2022, was due to expire at the end of May. It has been extended until the end of September.

PM Modi Conferred With Title Of Dharma Chakravarti At Centenary Celebrations
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday was conferred with the title of 'Dharma Chakravarti' at the centenary celebrations of Jain saint Acharya Shri 108 Vidyanand Ji Maharaj. "On this occasion, you honoured me with the title of 'Dharma Chakravarti'. I do not consider myself suitable for this. But it is our culture that whatever we receive from saints, we accept it as 'prasad'. So, I humbly accept this 'prasad' and dedicate it to Maa Bharati," PM Modi said during his speech. The centenary celebrations mark the formal commencement of a year-long national tribute to the spiritual leader, being organised by the Union Culture Ministry in collaboration with the Bhagwan Mahaveer Ahimsa Bharti Trust, Delhi. Talking about how today's date is special as Acharya Vidyanand Muniraj received his title on this very day in 1987, which represented a 'pavitra dhaara' connecting Jain culture to ideas of restraint and compassion. "This day is also special because on 28th June 1987, Acharya Vidyanand Muniraj received the title of 'Acharya'. It wasn't just an honour but it was also a 'pavitra dhaara' connecting the Jain culture to ideas, restraint and compassion," PM Modi said. "When we are celebrating his 100th birth anniversary today, it reminds us of that historic moment. On this occasion, I bow to the feet of Acharya Shri Munirajji. I pray that his blessings are with us always. People, these centenary celebrations are not just any normal event. It has the memory of a time period and the remembrance of an ascetic life. Today, to make this moment memorable, postal stamps have been made, for this too, I greet the people," the Prime Minister added. During the celebrations, PM Modi, along with Union Minister of Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, unveiled the commemorative postage stamps in memory of the Acharya. Talking about the history of India, the PM Modi added, "India is the oldest living culture of the world. We have been immortal for thousands of years because our ideas are immortal, our thoughts are immortal, and our philosophy is immortal. The source of this philosophy is our sages, saints and acharyas" Earlier today, PM Modi, along with the Union Minister Shekhawat, attended an exhibition titled "Life and Legacy of Acharya Shri 108 Vidyanand Ji Maharaj," which featured paintings and murals depicting the leader's life. The centenary year will be observed from June 28, 2025 to April 22, 2026, with a range of cultural, literary, educational, and spiritual initiatives across the country, aimed at celebrating the life and legacy of Acharya Shri 108 Vidyanand Ji Maharaj, according to an official statement from the ministry of culture. The Acharya was born on April 22, 1925, in Shedbal, Belagavi (Karnataka). He received his initiation at a young age and went on to become one of the most prolific Jain scholars of modern times, having memorised over 8,000 Jain Agamic verses. He has authored over 50 works on Jain philosophy and ethics, including Jain Darshan, Anekantavada, and Mokshamarg Darshan. He travelled barefoot across Indian states for several decades, strictly adhering to Kayotsarga meditation, brahmacharya, and extreme austerity. He was instrumental in the restoration and revival of ancient Jain temples across India, including those in Delhi, Vaishali, Indore, and Shravanabelagola, and was closely associated with the Shravanabelagola Mahamastakabhishek and the 2600th Janm Kalyanak Mahotsav of Lord Mahavira. He identified the site of Kundgram (now Basokund) in Bihar as the birthplace of Bhagwan Mahavir, a finding later recognised by the Government of India in 1956. The centenary year will feature programs across India, focusing on community engagement, youth participation, interfaith dialogue, temple outreach, and Jain heritage awareness, ensuring that the timeless message of Acharya Vidyanand Ji reaches future generations.
