Texas teen accused of fatal track meet stabbing set to graduate high school
'We are proud to share that Karmelo Anthony will graduate and receive his high school diploma, and that his academic achievements will not be disrupted,' NGAN president Dominique Alexander said in a statement to NBC Dallas-Fort Worth.
The nonprofit organization working with Anthony's family announced that the 17-year-old met all the academic requirements for graduation, with the necessary amount of credits and maintaining a 3.7 GPA, according to NBC Dallas-Fort Worth.
Anthony will not be allowed to participate in any senior graduation activities, NGAN told NBC Dallas-Fort Worth.
The teen was arrested on April 2 in connection with the fatal stabbing of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf. Metcalf was stabbed in the chest at a track meet and reportedly died in his twin brother's arms.Misinformation circulating on social media and media outlets about the Centennial High School graduation ceremony was addressed by Frisco Independent School District (ISD) superintendent Dr. Mike Waldrip in an email to students, staff and families of the school, WFAA reported.
Waldrip stated that no student who commits a Title V felony, or serious criminal offense, would be allowed to participate in the graduation ceremony, WFAA said.
'Frisco ISD does not condone violence or crime in our schools or at our events and will not reward or celebrate those who hurt others," Waldrip said, according to WFAA.
Frisco ISD did not immediately respond to an NBC News request for comment.
Anthony's parents spoke publicly at a press conference hosted by NGAN on April 17, after the organization asked police to remove Metcalf's father, Jeff Metcalf, from the event, calling his presence 'inappropriate.'
Kala Hayes, Anthony's mother, said her family has faced death threats and harassment since her son's arrest, leading the family to relocate to a rental home over security concerns. She also addressed backlash over the crowdfunding page — which has now raised more than $500,000 — the family established to help with legal and moving costs.
Anthony posted the $250,000 bond for his release on April 14, required to wear an ankle monitor under house arrest and check in with a bailiff every Friday, NBC Dallas-Fort Worth reported.

Homicide investigation underway after woman fatally shot, 2 injured in Fort Worth, police say

Australian state rolls out machete ‘disposal bins' ahead of ban
An Australian state has asked citizens to surrender machetes at disposal bins ahead of a statewide ban on the weapons aimed at combating knife crime. Australia's state of Victoria on Thursday announced that more than 40 machete disposal bins will be available at police stations across the state to allow citizens to safely get rid of the weapons without a penalty before the Sept. 1 ban begins. "Owning, carrying, using, buying, or selling a machete without a valid exemption or approval will be a criminal offense," the Victorian government said in a statement. The government is running a "Machete Amnesty" period from Sept. 1 to Nov. 30 to support the safe disposal of machetes. Those who do not surrender their machetes during the amnesty period may face imprisonment of up to two years or a fine of more than $47,000 AUD ($31,725 U.S. dollars). "These knives destroy lives – so we're taking them off the streets," Victoria Premier Jacinta Allan said in a statement. Victoria police have seized a record number of illegal knives from the streets, averaging at least 44 knives a day, Sky News Australia reported. Minister for Police Anthony Carbines said the government is backing Victoria Police to get the weapons out of the hands of young people to keep citizens safe. "Our message to anyone with these weapons is simple – get rid of them or face the consequences," Carbines said in a statement. Exemptions for those who can possess a machete include agricultural workers who use them as part of their job, along with machetes that are used in a traditional, historical or cultural capacity, according to the government. Individuals exempt must comply with strict conditions and be able to demonstrate eligibility if asked by police. The Victoria government said it had already issued a temporary ban on the sale of machetes in May, resulting in Amazon removing the weapons for purchase from its website.

Fort Worth police, SWAT respond to barricaded person; no injuries reported
A suspect fired shots and has barricaded themselves in a Fort Worth home Monday night, police said. Police were initially notified of a "person in distress call" to 911. As first responders arrived, shots were heard from inside the home in the 8100 block of Heron Drive, police said. Fort Worth police said SWAT is en route and they do not believe it is a hostage situation. Police also said no officers have fired any shots and no injuries have been reported.
