HONG KONG, July 7, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — ECHO ASIA, in collaboration with students from Global Business Studies, CUHK Business School, is pleased to announce the release of the Hong Kong's Digital Banking User Experience Survey 2025. The survey gathered insights from 508 Hong Kong residents through an online questionnaire*, with findings revealing that 24.1% of respondents have a negative impression of digital banks, and only 31.7% consider digital banks their primary account. This study aims to explore public perceptions and opinions of digital banking in Hong Kong, identify reasons behind the low adoption rate, and propose strategies for improvement.
*Results were analyzed based on 361 complete responses.
This research project is led by ECHO ASIA, with students from Global Business Studies, CUHK Business School, serving as the 'Knowledge and Research Partner.' The team members include Ms. Audrey Chan, Ms. Cheri Cheng, Ms. Hannah Chu, Ms. Kayla Yu, and Ms. Yoyo Chan. The research methodology and questionnaire design also benefited from the advice of Dr. Fred Ku, Associate Dean of the Faculty of Business of The Chinese University of Hong Kong and Co-Director of Global Business Studies, who serves as Honorary Advisor to this study. The study was conducted through an online questionnaire, with over 80% of respondents aged between 18 and 49, mainly covering Generation Z and Millennial consumers.
The digital banking market in Hong Kong is experiencing rapid growth, with the number of users continuously rising and account holders now exceeding 2.2 million. The city's fintech environment continues to improve, supported by a regulatory framework and innovation strategies that are driving industry transformation. Our team aims to leverage this survey to provide concrete data from the users' perspective, offering valuable insights for regulators and financial institutions. This initiative seeks to support informed decision-making and further promote the healthy development of Hong Kong's digital banking ecosystem.

Digital Bank Adoption Steadily Rising, Yet Users Still Prefer Traditional Banks
Over 62.9% of respondents currently hold a digital banking account, indicating strong coverage and adoption of digital banking services in Hong Kong. Among respondents aged 18 to 49, about two-thirds (66.3%) have digital bank accounts, while half of those aged 50 and above also maintain digital banking accounts. This demonstrates that digital banking primarily serves Generation Z and Millennials, while its reach is gradually expanding to a broader age demographic.
The research data reveals key trends and challenges in the usage of digital banks in Hong Kong, highlighting that traditional banks continue to dominate the market. Although over half of the respondents (54.2%) have held digital bank accounts for more than two years, only 31.7% consider digital banking their primary account. This suggests that while digital banks have established a foothold in the market, their frequency of use remains relatively low.
User Needs Unmet and Security Concerns Pose Major Challenges
Among respondents who do not use digital banks as their primary channel, 68.3% cite unmet needs, security concerns, or unfamiliarity with digital banking services as reasons. Some also prefer physical or traditional banks. These findings underscore the need for digital banks to enhance user experience, diversify services, and strengthen security measures to build greater trust and awareness, thereby increasing usage and market share.
Account Opening Promotions Define Digital Banks' Market Position
The most valued service identified by respondents (33.5%) is digital banks' account opening promotions. Over half (52.6%) believe these promotions outperform those of traditional banks, demonstrating the effectiveness of digital banks' marketing strategies in attracting new users. Conversely, about 23% regard savings services as most valuable, but more than half (53.2%) feel traditional banks better meet their savings needs, revealing room for digital banks to improve long-term trust and core financial offerings.
Public Expectations for Higher Deposit Rates and Cashback Rewards
Regarding marketing strategies, over half of respondents (52.4%) recommend competitive deposit rates and lower minimum deposit thresholds to boost confidence. Additionally, 43.5% suggest offering higher cashback on credit or debit cards (e.g., 1-2% local spending, 3-5% overseas). This indicates digital banks must balance short-term incentives with long-term product competitiveness, especially in savings and interest rate design, to compete effectively with traditional banks and enhance user retention.
Establishing Physical Branches Key to Building Trust in Digital Banks
70.1% of respondents are unclear or unaware of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority's current and upcoming digital banking policies, such as renaming digital banks, removal of retail banking services, and allowing physical branches. This points to limited public understanding of policy, operational models, and development of digital banks. Nearly a quarter (24.1%) hold negative views of digital banks.
More than half of respondents identify the lack of physical branches (56.2%) and reliance solely on mobile apps (54.9%) as defining features of digital banks. Notably, 57.6% believe permitting digital banks to establish physical branches would significantly boost their confidence. Although physical branches differ from the original digital banking model, this policy could effectively address Hong Kong residents' security concerns and enhance trust.

Since the official launch of 8 digital banks in 2020, market acceptance has been steadily increasing. By the end of 2023, digital banks collectively accumulated 2.2 million deposit customers in Hong Kong. However, their overall market share among all retail banks in Hong Kong remained relatively low, at approximately 0.3% by the end of 2023. Our survey concludes that digital banks have a clear path to success by boosting customer engagement and driving more active use of their products and services.'
Dr. Fred Ku, Associate Dean of the CUHK Business School and Co-Director of Global Business Studies, stated: 'Our research reveals a critical turning point in the development of digital banking in Hong Kong. While previous studies have primarily focused on the breadth of adoption—measuring account growth—our study is the first to delve deeply into the depth of usage, uncovering that only 31.7% of users consider digital banks their primary account. This significant gap highlights the fundamental challenge digital banks face in transitioning users from trial to trust.
Particularly noteworthy is our focus on the 18-49 age group—the younger generation who not only represent the future backbone of the banking industry but also define the standards for digital financial services. Our findings show that nearly half of users feel digital banks do not fully meet their comprehensive financial needs, while 70% of respondents lack awareness of relevant regulatory policies. These insights provide clear directions for both industry players and regulators to improve.

India's Gen Z billionaires bored with business
THE family that ran India's largest luggage maker for more than half a century is packing it in, with control of Mumbai-based VIP Industries Ltd, passing to private equity. 'What do I do?' Dilip Piramal, the 75-year-old chairman, wondered aloud in a television interview after announcing the sale. 'The younger generation is not interested in management.' Piramal isn't the only ageing businessperson to have run out of successors: 'Today among the scions of some of the most affluent families of India, someone is an artist, someone wants to be a sportsman, someone wants to run a small restaurant. 'There's nothing wrong in that. It's the modern trend, people want to do their own things.' Two hundred years ago, that 'modern' trend among young people used to be enterprise. That's when families like Piramal's began to spread out of the Marwar region in land-locked northern India to take advantage of British-controlled trading opportunities in the port cities of Bombay and Calcutta – now Mumbai and Kolkata. Cotton, jute, and opium sold to China provided the seed capital to the Marwari business community for everything from textile mills to cement factories. By the early 20th century, these emerging industrial empires were large enough to challenge the colonial masters and their commercial interests. The likes of Ghanshyam Das Birla openly supported Mahatma Gandhi's campaign for independence, even as they outran rivals like Andrew Yule & Co. The Birla House in Delhi, a prominent hub for the freedom movement, was also where Gandhi was assassinated. As the sway of family firms continued after India's 1947 independence, it was believed that newer generations would always be available to take over the reins. Below the surface, however, the link between ownership and management has been weakening for some time. Piramal's daughter, Radhika, a Harvard University MBA, was the chief executive officer for a few years before quitting in 2017 and relocating with her spouse to London. Her same-sex marriage is not legally recognised in India. The luggage maker was back to being in the care of professional managers, a double-edged sword considering that a rival firm set up by a former managing director is now three-fifths bigger than VIP by market value. The heirs of prominent business families – Millennial and Gen Z billionaires – are setting their own life goals. It's the sensible thing to do. In a labour-surplus economy, access to capital through clan networks and strategic marital alliances was family-run firms' core advantage. But via public markets and private equity, finance is now available to a much wider section of entrepreneurs. Risk-taking has been democratised. That frees up younger members of business dynasties to try new things. Someone recently asked the singer-songwriter Ananya Birla on social media if she was from the family behind India's largest-selling cement brand. She is indeed the great-great-granddaughter of Ghanshyam Das Birla. But from financial inclusion among rural women to a recently launched beauty brand, the 31-year-old Oxford graduate has her own interests that are independent of the sprawling commodities behemoth led by her father. Though they're from Tamil Nadu in southern India, and not Marwar in Rajasthan, it's the same for philanthropist Roshni Nadar Malhotra, the chair of HCL Technologies Ltd, a US$48bil outsourcing powerhouse founded by her dad. He gifted her the family's controlling stake in March. Running the tech firm's day-to-day operations is someone else's job. Nadar is passionate about wildlife conservation, among other things. Piramal is retaining 20% of VIP. But that's just a financial investment in a publicly traded security. He'll pare it down. Owners of unlisted firms are proceeding more slowly. A few months ago, the family behind Haldiram's, a 90-year-old Indian snacks brand, parted with a minority stake to Singapore's Temasek Holdings Pte and other global investors. Media reports put the firm's valuation at US$10bil. A scenario where India's business elite is basically a bunch of rich financiers, living off accumulated wealth, doesn't appeal to everyone. 'What concerns me is that many in this generation are taking the easy way out, especially in the post-Covid world,' says billionaire Uday Kotak, who retired two years ago as managing director of Kotak Mahindra Bank, which he founded in the 1980s as a finance company. 'They claim to be managing family offices and investments, trading in the stock market, allocating funds to mutual funds, and treating it as a full-time job.' But they are probably just smart to realise that they're sandwiched. On one hand, access to capital is no longer their abiding advantage. On the other, real economic power is concentrating in fewer hands. Viral Acharya, a former central bank deputy governor, has shown in his research that India's top five non-financial groups have expanded their share of total assets by eight percentage points in 30 years, whereas the next five business groups' sway has shrunk by roughly the same amount. From cement, steel, autos, power, and paints to retail, telecom, media, finance, and aviation, a handful of powerful conglomerates are pouncing on every new opportunity. No wonder the successors of tycoons like Mukesh Ambani, Gautam Adani and Sajjan Jindal are closely involved in management. Children from middling business families probably don't see the point of entering a new field only to see it being disrupted by a startup – or dominated by a bigger player. Many more Indian assets will change hands as their family owners ultimately lose interest in tending to them. Report: 99% of Malaysians likely to adopt emerging digital payment methods in the next year
DIGITAL payments adoption is fast gaining traction locally as Malaysians adopt innovative payment options and leapfrog into mobile-first ecosystems. According to new research by Mastercard which surveyed consumers across the globe on payment preferences, almost two-thirds (63%) of Malaysian consumers prefer using new and innovative methods such as Tap & Go mobile payments, biometric payments, QR codes and mobile wallets over traditional methods like cash or manual card entry, reflecting a widespread appetite for innovation. This compares to just 25% in North America, 24% in Europe and 53% in Asia Pacific overall, underlining Malaysian consumers' receptivity to adopting emerging digital payment solutions. Embracing payment innovation Digital payment adoption is set to surge in Malaysia, with 99% of consumers likely to use emerging digital payment methods in the next year. They also want a choice in payment types, with 93% likely to use five or more payment methods in the next 12 months. While cash is still Malaysia's most used payment method—70% of consumers used it in the last year, narrowly edging out QR code payments (64%)—usage of digital payment methods is set to rise in the next year. In Malaysia, 86% of consumers are likely to use instant payment services while 85% and 83% expect to use QR code payments and digital wallets respectively in the year ahead. This preference for innovation applies to other emerging technologies as well, with 89% of Malaysian consumers (compared to 86% across APAC more broadly) saying they are keen to use AI to manage their finances, particularly for fraud detection, payment automation, product personalisation and predicting financial outcomes. There is also rising demand for payment options to maximise the value of their wallets with 91% of Malaysians agreeing that their current financial status plays a substantial role in their choice of payment methods, among the highest globally. Convenience is king (Image: Pexels/Pixabay) As payment options grow, consumers are seeking hyper-convenient ways to manage money that fit seamlessly with their digital usage habits. They want flexibility to customise how they pay, tapping into digitally native methods like peer-to-peer or peer-to-merchant payments, QR codes, wearables, and social commerce. In fact, 92% of Malaysians agree that companies should make it as simple as possible for consumers to buy from them, with 86% agreeing that they should be able to buy anything at any time, regardless of the type of payment methods. Super apps are the new baseline: In Malaysia, 75% of consumers use or want all-in-one apps to manage payments, shopping, and more. As these platforms become mainstream, payment tools must meet consumers where they already are, not the other way around. Social shopping is shaping commerce, especially for younger consumers: In Malaysia, 54% of Gen Z consumers and 46% of Millennial consumers prefer buying through social apps as compared to a merchant's website. In fact, 72% of Malaysians say influencers now shape their buying decisions—eight percentage points higher than the region's average. Embedding seamless payments into digital leisure spaces like social media apps is key to enabling this shift from browsing to buying. Trust and security are top of mind: While 72% of Malaysian consumers see biometric payments as more secure than traditional methods, 84% are concerned about who has access to their data, 6 percentage points higher than the Asia Pacific average. Mastercard Malaysia & Brunei country manager Beena Pothen noted that the findings reaffirmed that the digital evolution in payments has firmly taken centre stage in Malaysia. Are parents ready to be the Bank of Mom and Dad?
YOUNG Americans are having trouble becoming fully independent adults. Millennials, who were long ridiculed for being boomerang kids who scurried back to mom and dad's basement after leaving the security blanket of college, know a thing or two about that. But the failure to launch trend is continuing with Gen Z, the latest cohort of 20-somethings taking out cash from the Bank of Mom and Dad. Over half of the adults in the generation reported that they don't pay for their own housing, according to a 2024 Bank of America (BOFA) study. In fact, parents of adult Gen Zers expect to give their children US$1,813 (RM7,703) a month in 2025, based on a March report by It's the highest level in three years and includes expenses for groceries, cell phones, rent and utility bills. This behaviour is not merely on account of arrested development. There are many factors at play, including the uncertainty around artificial intelligence (AI) and long-term employment prospects for entry-level jobs. It's a reality that raises a major question for current and prospective parents: Can you financially subsidise an adult child for the long-term? The cost of raising a child to 18 continues to rise and result in eye-watering predictions. Families spend an estimated average of US$26,000 annually on kids, which would equate to a total of US$468,000, according to recent analysis from SmartAsset. Those in high-cost-of-living areas or places with a scarcity issue for childcare pay even more. The average price tag of raising a child in Boston per year was estimated to be just under US$40,000 in 2025, for example. But this fixation on just getting a kid to 18 is such a narrow scope. According to Sallie Mae's annual 'How America Pays for College' report that analysed undergraduate data, parents helped their child pay for nearly 50% of college — a milestone that often lasts for more than the stereotypical four years — in 2024. Seven years ago, the company found that parents helped cover 31% of the cost. The average price of tuition and fees for a public four-year in-state college is US$11,610 for the 2024-2025 school year. Out-of-state schools cost nearly three times as much. Private nonprofit four-year colleges came with the highest price tag of US$43,350. After that life marker is passed, then the conversation of grad school — which costs an average of around US$43,000 a year — might come. While parents tend to cover this added expense less often, over the years articles, advice columns, social media posts and discussion boards have explored some version of this question: 'Should parents pay for graduate school too?' Whatever families' answers are, the expectation, at least, seems to be growing. And that's despite the fact that grad school itself may not be the answer to most young people's career woes. Keep in mind that this is what things cost currently. It's hard to imagine how much college will be for Gen Alpha. Looking at the last decade certainly doesn't paint an optimistic picture. The cost of a private nonprofit four-year degree was roughly US$13,000 more in the 2024-2025 school year than a decade prior. Approximately US$1,300 a year might not sound like much, but it represents a nearly 39% increase in a decade. The average public, four-year in-state school tuition has risen 27% over the same time period. Of course, generative AI could completely change the landscape of higher education before they get there. Trade and vocational schools could see increased enrolment as traditionally white-collar jobs lean more on technology. New grads are already at the forefront of seeing what it's like when a machine can take over entry-level (or higher) jobs. The unemployment rate for them hit 5.8% in March, which was a four-year high, according to the New York Federal Reserve (NY Fed). The other concern is underemployment, which is defined by the NY Fed as graduates working in jobs that typically do not require a college degree. A significant number of Gen Zers, 41.2%, are in this position. It's the making of the same conditions — recession woes and a tough job market post-The Great Recession — that kept millennial financially tethered to their parents well into adulthood and earned them criticism for draining their parents' retirement funds. Newer moms and dads might need to account for this. Americans believe they need US$1.26 million in order to retire comfortably, according to a 2025 Northwestern Mutual study. And yet, just over half think it is somewhat or very likely that they'll outlive their retirement savings, with 40% of boomers and 56% of Gen X reporting to have the concern. The gulf between what is needed to live a comfortable life and current retirement assets is wide. Boomers aged 61 to 79 have an average 401(k) balance of US$249,300 and average IRA (Individual Retirement Account) balance of US$257,002, based on Fidelity fourth quarter of 2024 data. Gen Xers have an average 401(k) balance of US$192,300 and an average IRA balance of US$103,592. Of course, members of both generations may be drawing down on their accounts already subsidising with Social Security or accessing pension funds in addition to these retirement accounts. It's a reminder that millennial and Gen Z parents of young children might need to structure their finances with long-term flexibility in mind. While the often-frustrating advice to 'figure it out as you go' holds some truth, too many moms and dads might be looking at their bundles of joy and rarely calculating the what ifs beyond the ages of 18 or 22.
