Late birdies see Leona Maguire and Jennifer Kupcho keep Dow Championship hopes alive
Leading by one stroke overnight, they were four over for the day with two holes to play when Kupcho made birdie putts on the last two greens.
Their two-over 72 left them tied for fourth on 11 under, just two strokes behind Sarah Schmelzel and Albane Valenzuela.
The US-Switzerland duo shot a 68 in the day three foursomes to lead by one stroke on 12 under from Belgium's Manon de Roey and France's Pauline Rossin-Bouchard and Koreans Jin Hee Im and Somi Lee at Midland Country Club.
'I think they were huge,' Maguire said of their two closing birdies. 'I think it gives us a chance going into tomorrow.
'Just really got nothing going today, but we tried to stay patient and keep giving ourselves chances; we eventually did on the last holes. Jen holed two great putts.'
Playing under the team name the Irish Goodbyes, Maguire and Kupcho bogeyed the first, eighth, ninth and 16th before their late birdie brace left them in a three-way tie for fourth.
'There wasn't a whole lot of talk between each other,' Kupcho confessed. 'Myself personally, I just was leaving a couple of putts short.
'I hit a couple of good shots that really just ended up in bad spots. So I just told myself it was a good swing. Just move on.
'That's pretty much what we did. I feel like we took it how was it and kept fighting.'
Despite their struggles, they know they still have a chance in the fourball betterball format after carding a ten under 60 to take the lead on Friday.
'Just try and go low and try and post a number early and see what happens,' Maguire said of their Sunday game plan. 'I think it was nice to see two putts go in at the end.'
At the Amundi German Masters on the Ladies European Tour, Malaysia's Shannon Tan carded a five-under 68 to lead by three shots from England's Hannah Screen on 12 under.
Anna Foster made five birdies in a level par 73 to share 13th on two under, while Lauren Walsh was 29th on one over after a 76.

No joy for Leona Maguire as Koreans Im and Lee win Dow Championship
The Irish Goodbyes closed with a two-under 68 in the final round fourballs to finish tied for 18th on three-under. American duo Megan Khang and Lexi Thompson closed with a 60 to set the target at 20 under, but lost in a foursomes format playoff to Koreans Jin Hee Im and Somi Lee. Lee made an eight-foot birdie putt at the first extra hole before Khang missed from five feet to extend the playoff. Im and Lee, who closed with a 62, are in their second year on the LPGA Tour. It was their first title in America, though both were prolific winners on the Korea LPGA, with Im winning six titles to Lee's five. There was also a maiden win in the US for Aldrich Potgeiter, who at 20 years, 9 months and 16 days became the youngest South African to win on the PGA Tour. The former Amateur Championship winner won the Rocket Classic when he beat Max Greyserman on the fifth extra hole at Detroit Golf Club after Chris Kirk had been eliminated from the playoff with a bogey at the second tie hole. A birdie from 18 feet on the par-three 15th clinched it for Potgieter. Kirk missed a nine-footer to win on the first tie hole but dropped out of the playoff after missing a four footer for par at the second. Potgieter was two strokes ahead entering the final round and closed with a three-under 69 to tie on 22 under with Greyserman and Kirk, who both shot 67. 'It was definitely a tough day,' Potgieter said. 'The start didn't go my way, I struggled to make putts, left a lot short. 'Finally got one to the hole, and I just saw the ball roll end over end, and I knew it was going to go in.'

Shannon Tan wins German Masters with Anna Foster best of the Irish
Shannon Tan emerged as the winner of the Amundi German Masters by a single stroke with Anna Foster finishing best of the Irish in the Ladies European Tour event. Foster's two-under 71 on Sunday ensured that she finished in a tie for fourth on four under at the Green Eagle Golf course near Hamburg. Birdies on four, seven, nine, 13 and 16 helped the Dublin native on her way amid bogeys on six, ten and 14. Kildare's Lauren Walsh was the only other Irish player involved in the final round and ended her tournament with a 74 to finish in a tie for 26th on two over. But it was Singapore native Tan who had something to celebrate despite seeing her three-shot overnight lead whittled down to the bare minimum in round four. Tan's three-over 76 saw her finish on nine under with sixth-placed Helen Briem of Germany narrowly missing out on victory on home soil after a 73 brought her to within one shot of the summit. New Zealander's Amelia Garvey was third on seven under after a 72. The next stop on the LET will be the KPMG Women's Irish Open at Carton House which will get underway on Thursday.

Maguire and Kupcho rally with birdie-birdie finish to sit two back at team event
LEONA MAGUIRE AND Jennifer Kupcho salvaged a tough day with a birdie-birdie finish at the LPGA Dow Championship team event, signing for a two-over par 72 that leaves them two shots off the lead heading into Sunday's final round. Maguire and Kupcho sit on 11-under, chasing leaders Sarah Schmelzel of America and Albane Valenzuela of Switzerland who shot 68 on Saturday to move to 13-under. Manon De Roey and Pauline Roussin-Bouchard, and Im Jin-ee and Lee So-mi are tied for second place on 12-under, while Maguire and Kupcho are in a three-way tie for fourth. Sunday's final round will be the fourball format, where Maguire and Kupcho combined to shoot a sensational 10-under par on Friday to take the 36-hole lead. They struggled to carry that form into Saturday's alternate shot foursomes, but when their first birdie of the day came at the 17th hole, they quickly followed it up with another on 18 to keep their challenge alive. Advertisement 'I think they were huge,' Maguire said afterwards. 'I think it gives us a chance going into tomorrow. 'Just really got nothing going today, but tried to stay patient tried to keep giving ourself chances; eventually did on the last holes. Jen holed two great putts.' Kupcho added: 'I feel like we took it how was it and kept fighting.' The American is in familiar territory heading into the final round, having won the title with Lizette Salas in 2022 and teamed with Ally Ewing to finish runners-up last year. 'Just try and go low and try and post a number early and see what happens,' Maguire said when asked about Sunday's strategy, where they'll tee off at 5.24pm Irish. 'I think it was nice to see two putts go in at the end.' – © AFP 2025
