WHAT'S BEEN SAID IN THE BUILD-UP?
Brendan Rodgers wants Celtic striker Johnny Kenny to sign a new contract before a decision is made on his short-term future.
The Parkhead boss spoke with the 22-year-old Ireland Under-21 attacker on yesterday morning about his plans. Kenny's current deal runs until next summer.
The Sligo man netted the only goal against his former club Queen's Park on Friday.
He will hope to build on that form against at SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh in their second pre-season friendly.

Rodgers has not yet decided whether Kenny will remain with the squad this season or if a loan move will be arranged.
The Antrim native said: 'I've been really pleased for Johnny since I've seen him close up in January.

'I think he's improved, he's developed, and I spoke to Johnny funnily enough this morning about his plan.
'We would really like him to sign another deal at Celtic and then we'll decide what's going to be the best for his development, whether it's to stay or whether we think he needs another step, to go out.
'But he's got a lot of strength and a lot of qualities, and he's done very well since he came back in January.'
Rodgers insists that Celtic know where they need to improve in the transfer window, and is confident that they will do so.

The Bhoys have been linked with attackers such as Rapid Vienna winger Isak Jansson, Napoli and Italy Under-21 ace Giuseppe Ambrosino and Japanese striker Shin Yamada.
However, Rodgers was noncommittal when asked if enquiries had been made.

He replied: 'When you're a club the size of Celtic, you get linked to so many players and there's so much gossip and speculation.
'But we've signed some really good players. We've signed some potential. And we also know we need to sign some players that can affect the team, because we lost some really important players.
"Kyogo in January and Nicolas Kuhn possibly leaving. So we know what we need to improve. And I'm pretty sure we will do over the summer.'
Kieran Tierney's Celtic reappearance will not come on Leeside despite returning to training with the squad on their Irish tour.
Adam Idah will be back in his hometown for tonight's game, but the remaining international players will sit out the fixture.
Rodgers confirmed: 'Kieran won't be involved. He'll be at the game, he's over, but the international players only started training on Friday.
'We would normally give them a week to train before them playing a game, but those guys will be there.'

Celtic fans invade Pairc Ui Chaoimh pitch after winning pre-season trophy

Celtic fans invaded the pitch in scenes reminiscent of a big Cork GAA hurling day as they won the inaugural Cork Super Cup in Pairc Ui Chaoimh on Tuesday evening. Cork City hosted the Scottish giants at the home of Cork GAA for a glamour friendly with the Hoops running out 2-1 winners on the day. The game had all the tell-tale signs of a pre-season friendly with a crowd half hearted trying to drum up an atmosphere while Celtic were undercooked as they gear up for the new season. In the end, Celtic would run out 2-1 winners thanks to a late Colby Donovan header, while Cork showed plenty of fight and were the fitter and better team for large spells of the game. In truth, there wasn't much to shout about during the game but the fans who paid to attend made sure to storm the pitch afterwards. There was disappointment for fans with hometown hero Adam Idah not selected to play. Ireland forward Idah had been a central figure in promoting the game and was in Cork but given he played Ireland's international games after Celtic's Scottish Cup final he has been given some extra days off. Idah is back in training with the Celtic squad and could feature as soon as this Saturday in their next friendly. The Scottish Champions are busy with upcoming friendlies as they gear up for their league opener on August 3rd. Although Ireland is a relatively attractive venue for pre-season friendlies with the likes of Liverpool and Manchester United playing fixtures here in recent years, there is a surprisingly small slate of games this time round. The only confirmed fixture up to this point is Leeds versus AC Milan in the Aviva Stadium.

Celtic hit late winner against Cork City to earn Super Cup honours in Páirc Uí Chaoimh

Cork City 1 Celtic 2 Stephen Barry reports from SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh A PITCH INVASION saw the Cork Super Cup trophy presentation cancelled to conclude a late 2-1 Celtic victory over Cork City. A crowd of 26,580 pored in for Cork GAA's first attempt at a pre-season fixture at a sun-drenched SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh. Man of the match Matthew Murray struck a home equaliser after Luke McCowan's opener. But Colby Donovan came up with a winner three minutes from time. The Bhoys depart for warm-weather training in Portugal, while City face into a Munster Derby against Waterford on Friday in their battle to avoid automatic relegation. Hometown hero Adam Idah was a disappointing omission as Celtic left out those who played in the June international window. The majority of squad members listed in the match programme were not togged out. Advertisement Supporters invading the pitch at Páirc Uí Chaoimh. Hayato Inamura made his debut at left-back and showed plenty of endeavour ahead of a possible loan. Summer signing Fiacre Kelleher captained City on his first start, with Seani Maguire ruled out due to injury. Ger Nash gave debuts to a handful of newcomers. Cliftonville recruit David Odumosu started in goal, Rory Feely lined out at centre-back alongside Kelleher, and Charlie Lutz made his first start up front. Alex Nolan had an early shot blocked for the hosts, but a pattern of Celtic control soon emerged. Winger Ben Summers looked lively as he returned a one-two for James Forrest to give Odumosu his first test. Kenny, Arne Engels, and McCowan were others to try their luck before the latter broke the deadlock. Forrest played the ball to Engels, who produced a super layoff for the 27-year-old midfielder to fire into the top corner. Kenny had a shot tipped over by Odumosu, while Malik Dijksteel couldn't find his range at the other end. With Celtic making 11 changes and City opting for eight, the Leesiders began to get on top. Nelson's pass caused a mix-up in the Celts' defence and Murray nipped between Doohan and Stephen Welsh to finish into the City End. The centre-back soon departed with a painful injury. Brendan Rodgers: 'It would have been lovely for Adam, but it was just too big a risk'

'Cork is the new Mediterranean,' was Brendan Rodgers' response when he was asked for his assessment on Celtic's narrow Cork Super Cup triumph against Cork City. In the baking heat at Páirc Uí Chaoimh on Tuesday night, goals from Luke McCowan and Colby Donovan, either side of a superbly taken equaliser by 17-year-old Cork native Matthew Murray, ensured the Scottish champions claimed another piece of silverware. But while they were treated to a decent contest, many of those amongst the 26,580 crowd that made their way to the home of Cork GAA may have been disappointed not to see Cork's Adam Idah line out in the famous Hoops on his return to Leeside. In a more serious tone, Rodgers explained his reasons behind leaving the former College Corinthians forward out of his squad entirely. 'Emotionally it would have been lovely, and Adam would have loved to have played but those international guys that come back Friday… he trained hard this morning and all those other guys, but it was just too big a risk,' he insisted. 'To come back in after being off for the summer and you only train Friday, Saturday, we normally would give them at least a week before they would play. 'Adam knows. I think for him it's just amazing for him to be back home, to come back… when I told him last year, we would be coming to Cork he was really excited about it. 'If the international games were at a different time, he would have been back in earlier and then trained and been on a good level. 'He understood why he wasn't involved, but I know he's loved being back here for this short time.' Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers meets fans before the pre-season friendly. Pic: Niall Carson/PA Wire. One Irish player that did feature for Celtic on the night was Johnny Kenny and while Rodgers admitted he was also close to missing out, the Celts boss added that he hopes the Sligo native will sign a new deal with the club in the near future. 'It was nice for Johnny. He actually took a bad knock in training on Monday, and we weren't sure if he was going to be able to play. 'He got a real bad knock on his shin. But I think he was really determined to come over to Ireland and play. 'Johnny was threatening the back line, nearly looked like he'd get in a couple of times, but he always gives his all and we'll see how pre-season goes for him. 'I think the plan for Johnny is, if we can, because we still think there's a lot of development for him but yes, we would like to sign him to a new deal and then see what path it takes, whether he stays or whether he needs to go and get games. We'll know that over the coming weeks.' Celtic's trip to Cork has been short and eventful, but otherwise it seemed to have been a success for all parties. Asked if a Cork Super Cup rematch is on the cards for next summer, then, Rodgers remarked: 'I cannot promise anything, I can't commit to anything now. 'We've got so many offers to travel the world, but I also think it's good for us to take Celtic to different parts of Ireland as well. 'We've been to Sligo last year, that was great. We've been to Cork and our notion is always to come back to here. 'But the short time we've been here, we've been received so well, and the facility has been brilliant. "The hotel (Fota) was so good, and the only problem was we couldn't play some golf! 'But can I just say, just officially as well, a big thank you to the people of Cork and the city. 'It's been so nice from when we arrived yesterday (Monday) afternoon. The support, the friendship, everything has been amazing so a wonderful place to come and play and tonight was a great event for us all. So, thank you very much for everything.'
