Thennur UPHC in Tiruchi gets NQAS certification
The UPHC secured 90.52% and fulfilled all requirements for the certification. The facility received accreditation for adhering to the highest standards in healthcare, especially in parameters such as preventive and curative services, providing services as per local needs, maintenance and upkeep of equipment and infrastructure, diagnostic services, newborn and childcare, immunisation, implementing strict hand hygiene for employees and asepsis, waste management etc. It is the sixth UPHC to receive NQAS certification in Tiruchi.
A national assessment team inspected the centre on June 9 and 10 for an assessment before certification was issued. Specialists assessed the quality of infrastructure, including services offered to expectant mothers and newborns, treatment for communicable and non-communicable diseases, and the cleanliness of the health centre that caters to the needs of the people residing in the locality.
As a result, the UPHC has won a cash reward of ₹3 lakh. About 25% of the prize money will be given as incentives to the healthcare workers at the centre, and the rest will be used for patient welfare and the development of the UPHC.
According to M. Vijay Chandran, City Health Officer, the UPHC caters to a population of 58,752 in the area, and around 90% of the people have been screened for non-communicable diseases.
The health centre, on an average, handles around 250 to 300 patients a day and conducts two deliveries a month. It has a doctor, four staff nurses, five urban health nurses, a sector health nurse, a pharmacist, a lab technician, and four multipurpose health workers.
The two-storey facility has three beds for males and infants and a six-bedded labour ward. It has additional buildings for labs, pharmacy and medicine storage. The centre offers treatment in general medicine, maternity health, newborn and child care, immunisation, family planning, communicable disease, non-communicable disease, accident and emergency.
The NQAS teams are scheduled to assess the UPHCs in Kamaraj Nagar, Woraiyur, MK Kottai and East Boulevard Road in the coming weeks.

Health and Wellness centres inaugurated in Dindigul
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, through video conference, inaugurated Primary Health Centres (PHC), Urban Primary Health Centres (UPHC) and Wellness Centres in Dindigul district on Thursday. Minister for Food and Civil Supplies R. Sakkarapani and others were present during the inauguration of the Primary Health Centre in Markampatti in Oddanchatram in Dindigul district. The Chief Minister inaugurated 208 Urban Health and Wellness Centres and 50 Primary and Urban Health Centres across Tamil Nadu through video conference from Chennai. In Dindigul district, PHCs were opened at Markampatti, Adalur, Pandrimalai and Urban Primary Health Centre was inaugurated in Kodaikanal. Speaking on the occasion, Minister Sakkarapani said that the new PHC at Markampatti was constructed at a cost of Rs.1.20 crore. Work was underway to improve infrastructure facilities at Oddanchatram Government Hospital at a cost of Rs.25 crore., he said. Education and healthcare were the two eyes of the government and there was focus on the two sectors, he added.

Stalin inaugurates Katpadi's first UPHC
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Thursday virtually inaugurated three Urban Primary Health Centres (UPHCS) in Vellore and Ranipet districts, including the first such facility in Katpadi, ending a long-standing demand of residents. Health officials said a UPHC serves a population of 50,000 and at present, 13 centres have been functioning within the Vellore Corporation limits. 'The UPHC in Katpadi will focus on all government health programmes, including vaccination and general health check-up,' R. Lakshmanan, Commissioner, Vellore Corporation, told The Hindu. Built at a cost of ₹1.2 crore each, the UPHCs at Katpadi and Otteri in Vellore feature better facilities such as separate cabins for a duty doctor, four nurses, and other staff; a common visitors' hall; separate wards for specialised treatment; laboratory facilities; and well-furnished pharmacy with additional stocks. They will function between 8 a.m and 3 p.m on all days except Sundays. They have operation theatres and six beds for in-patients. Adequate parking space for ambulances and other vehicles are also provided. 'Now, women and senior citizens can easily gain access to better healthcare facilities. Earlier, we had to travel to the health centre in Old Town (Vellore), around 8 km from here,' said C. Pavitra, a resident. In Ranipet, which has 36 PHCs, the UPHC was opened at Kavanur village near Arcot town. Earlier, residents had to travel at least 8-10 km to reach Thimiri, the nearest town that has a health centre. Land for the new centre was donated by residents. On an average, each PHC should span two acres, whereas an upgraded health centre should cover five acres to provide more facilities such as staff quarters, additional buildings, and parking facilities. Five Urban Health and Wellness Centres, each built at ₹25 lakh, were also opened within the Vellore Corporation limits. The centre will have a doctor, a nurse, and a sanitation inspector. Each centre will function between 8 a.m. and noon, and 4 p.m.-8 p.m. on all days.

Health and Wellness centres inaugurated in Thoothukudi and Kanniyakumari
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin inaugurated Primary Health Care centres (PHC), Urban Primary Health Care centre (UPHC) and Wellness centres in Thoothukudi and Kanniyakumari district on Thursday. In Thoothukudi, urban wellness centres were inaugurated in Athimarapatti, Caldwell Colony, Silverpuram and Pandarampatti, under the jurisdiction of Thoothukudi corporation at a cost of ₹25 lakh. Similarly, urban wellness centres in Oorani street and Subramaniyapuram under Kovilpatti municipality and Pandagasalai in Kayalpattinam were also inaugurated. Additionally, a PHC constructed at a cost of ₹1.20 crore in Sivagnanapuram village in Vilathikulam union was also inaugurated during the event. In an event held at the Panadagalasalai area of Kayalpattinam, Collector K. Elambahavath lit the ceremonial lamp and distributed nutrition kits to pregnant women. In another event held at Calwell Colony, Minister of Social Welfare and Women Empowerment P. Geetha Jeevan lit the ceremonial lamp and inspected the facilities. Thoothukudi Mayor Jegan Periyasamy and Corporation Commissioner Banoth Murugendar Lal were present. Similarly in Nagercoil Corporation, the Chief Minister has inaugurated a UPHC in Peruvilai at a cost of ₹2.45 crore and five urban wellness centres in Krishnancoil, Housing Board, Puthan Bungalow, Iluppaiyadi Colony and CTM Puram, each at a cost of ₹25 lakh. Kanniyakumari Collector R. Alagumeena, who lit the ceremonial lamp at Peruvilai UPHC, said that around 50,000 people residing in different areas around Peruvilai region would benefit through the UPHC. Nagercoil Corporation Mayor R. Mahesh, Colachel MLA J.G. Prince and other officials were present at the event.
