SA Safari Rally set to make motorsport history

The Citizen27-04-2025
SA will make motorsport history when the country hosts round three of the SA Safari Rally from May 18 to 24.
The event is part of the prestigious World Rally-Raid Championship (W2RC).
The inaugural event, presented by event partner Toyota Gazoo Racing, is no ordinary event. It's a global spotlight moment – and SA is ready to shine.
'This is a defining moment for motorsport in SA,' said Vic Maharaj, the CEO of Motorsport South Africa.
'It's about more than racing. It's about showcasing our talent, terrain and ability to deliver world-class events. With SA-manufactured cars making up more than half of the field, a testament to our engineering excellence and deep motorsport roots, having the event on our home ground for the first time is exciting. We believe this could open doors to even bigger opportunities, including F1, in the future.'
Anton Roux, the chairperson of Motorsport South Africa, concurred, 'This event has the potential to pave the way for many more international motorsport events in SA. It is most probably the largest international event SA has hosted since the last Formula 1 was held at Kyalami in 1993.'
'With entries closing at the end of April, the lineup of top local and international participants is growing, and fans can expect to see some of the biggest names in international rally-raid on local soil,' said Archie Rutherford, the CEO of SA Rally Raid Championship.
Exciting news for South Africans is the inclusion of Ross Branch, Botswana's homegrown FIM W2RC champion and fan favourite 'Kalahari Ferrari', riding with Hero Motorsports.
Dakar Rally legend Giniel de Villiers will come out of retirement to be part of #TeamHiluxRallyRaid for the next two seasons.
'Having Giniel on board is like adding a turbocharger to our team. He brings unmatched experience and passion to the track,' said teammate Fouché Blignaut.
Nasser Al-Attiyah and Edouard Boulanger are expected to be part of the event. But Al-Attiyah will face some stiff local competition. Bracing up are the young guns from Toyota Gazoo Racing South Africa, Saood Variawa and Guy Botterill, Neil Woolridge, Motorsport's (Neil Woolridge Motorsport) Gareth Woolridge and 2023 SA Rally Raid Champion and Century Racing's Brian Baragwanath.
From Sun City to the desert dunes, the W2RC route will test the best of the best in a uniquely African setting.
'This is the moment we've worked so hard for. The world is watching – and we're almost ready,' concluded Rutherford.

Willie Le Roux shares message to young players after 100th cap

Springbok Willie Le Roux has shared an emotional message after making his 100th test match appearance. Images via Instagram: @wjjleroux Willie Le Roux has encouraged up-and-coming rugby players not to give up on their dreams after he made his 100th test appearance for the Springboks over the weekend. The 35-year-old made his debut for the South African national rugby team in 2013. He has played in three Rugby World Cups, the last two of which the Boks have won. WILLIE LE ROUX SHARES EMOTIONAL MESSAGE AFTER 100TH CAP In an emotional Instagram post, Willie Le Roux thanked the public for their well-wishes on his 100th test match. The cap took place on Saturday, 12 July, in South Africa's game against Italy at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Gqeberha. ADVERTISEMENT SA won the game 45-0. Sharing a collage of pictures for the special occasion, Willie posted: 'Playing my 100th test match for the Springboks is something I've wanted since I was a child. It's a moment that feels so surreal and incredibly humbling. 'The journey to get to here was never easy…there were definitely some tough times – injuries, doubts, setbacks – moments where the road ahead felt way too steep. But I held onto belief and kept pushing. Because when you love something this deeply, you find a way to keep going. Willie le Roux used his own experience to encourage other aspiring rugby players. He continued: 'Believe in your dreams. No matter where you come from, no matter how far away your goals may seem – it is possible. It does, however, take a lot of hard work, discipline, sacrifice, and heart'. WHO IS THE HIGHEST CAPPED SPRINGBOK? The highest-capped Springbok is currently Eben Etzebeth, who has made 132 appearances in green and gold. Last October, the 33-year-old surpassed Victor Matfield's previous record of 127 caps. Apart from the duo, only six more Springboks have surpassed 100 test caps: Bryan Habana, Tendai Mtawarira, John Smit, Jean de Villiers, Percy Montgomery, and now Willie le Roux. In an Instagram post, Eben congratulated Willie on his achievement. He posted: 'What a privilege to know you and share a rugby field with you for the last few years. You are a legend, my brother and an incredible person'. He added: 'WLR100 sounds just about right!'. HOW MANY CAPS DO YOU THINK WILLIE LE ROUX WILL MAKE IN HIS CAREER? Rassie surprises with new tricks

The first-minute ploy did not reap rewards because the Springboks had a free kick awarded against them for going early in the resulting scrum. In another startling move, the Boks set up line-out mauls in open play in a move which took the capacity 45,000 crowd and the tourists by surprise. The novelty kickoff move, however, did not go well with Italian coach Gonzalo Quesada, who said the world champions had not really needed to use the shock tactic to beat his side. 'I was really surprised and I did not take it really well,' he said. 'I don 't think they needed to do it because they can beat us without using these kinds of tactics. 'So I don ' t have a clue [about it], and for these last couple of weeks we were extremely respectful and we came with a lot of humility to the land of the world champions. 'They are deserved world champions, and the land of rugby and a land where we get inspired. 'Not from today because I came here for the first time in 1994 with my club, and I love coming to SA because when you are a rugby fan it ' s so nice to be here. 'I knew when SA prepared for this game they decided to dominate it and show they are the top-ranked team in the world. 'So I was surprised [by the kickoff] because I did not know if it was something we did or said that created that first move. 'I will only say I was really surprised because they did not need to do that to beat us or to show us anything. 'But it is part of their story and it does not concern us to analyse it.' Asked about the kickoff move, Erasmus said: 'Manie just made a mistake at the kickoff. No, I ' m just teasing. 'We wanted a scrum to get onto the game. 'The Boks found that last week Italy gave quick channel ones and the ball was out and we wanted to get into the contest scrum quickly with that [kickoff ploy]. 'There are lots of plans and things we do that do not work, which people do not know about. 'People only see the things that sometimes work. 'That was a typical example of a plan that did not work. 'SA wanted to get a scrum where we could lay down the standards. 'The previous game was a channel one in and out for them. 'We had a bit of a plan but then we got a free kick against us. 'So it was a good plan in theory, but a bad plan in practice.' On the midfield line-outs, he said: 'M any teams do different tactical moves. 'We did a maul in general play where it's just not a guy on the ground but a guy we lifted. 'We saw it being done by a Paul Roos U14 team. 'You get all the benefits from what you get in the line-out if you support a guy in general play, so it worked twice for us. 'Obviously, now people will be alert to that. 'So it's done now for a couple of games, and we are glad it worked.' The Boks managed to blank Italy despite a setback after 22 minutes when No 8 Jasper Wiese was shown a red card by referee Brace for a headbutt on Italian loose-head Danilo Fischetti. Scorers: SA 45: Tries: Grant Williams, Edwill van der Merwe (2), Canan Moodie, Malcolm Marx, Makazole Mapimpi and Jan-Hendrik Wessels. Conversions: Manie Libbok (5). Italy 0. The Herald

Glenrose Xaba aiming for a record-breaking performance at Absa Run Your City Durban 10K

Distance runner Glenrose Xaba is hoping to continue her fine recent form at the Absa Run Your City Durban 10K on Sunday. Glenrose Xaba will be hoping to continue her remarkable form over 10km so far this year when the distance runner lines up for the Absa Run Your City Durban 10K on Sunday. The notoriously fast, flat route offers the potential for the star of the track and road to dip under 32 minutes for the third time this year. Xaba will be aiming for her fastest time of the season, and is confident of beating her national 10km record. The Boxer Athletics Club runner stormed home in a time of 31:12 at the Absa Run Your City Durban 10K last year to take overall fourth place and better Elana Meyer's 23-year-old national mark. 'Yes. That's the plan,' was her response to questions about the possibility of setting a new SA record. 'I want to write my own history.' Xaba's performance in the recent SPAR Women's 10km Challenge in Durban will only add to her belief that she can once again raise the bar. She crossed the finish line in a time of 31:54 despite breezy conditions in Durban on June 22. She made light work of the challenge of the Ethiopian duo of Diniya Abaraya and Selam Gebre on that occasion. 'Consistency, determination and discipline are key,' Xaba explained when asked how she keeps on churning out world-class times despite a busy season. 'The body is feeling okay since I prepared it from the beginning of the season because I knew that it would have a lot of races.'
