A.P. Waqf Board plans to support poor Muslims through P4 initiative
Andhra Pradesh Waqf Board is putting all its efforts to implement the P4 (Public Private People Partnership) initiative to provide security and support to the poor Muslim families in the State. A.P. Waqf Board Chairman Abdul Azeez announced this while speaking at the fourth State-level meeting at Command Control Room of the Nellore Municipal Corporation (NMC) office on Saturday.
The P-4 is a poverty alleviation programme launched by Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu on March 30. According to the initiative, rich and affluent people who come forward to uplift the poor as 'Margadarsi' (guides) would support the beneficiary families called as 'Bangaru Kutumbam' (golden family).
Addressing the media after the meeting, Mr. Abdul Azeez said that the Waqf Board is exploring the ways to generate income from its properties across the State, while protecting them from alienation. Particularly, a Rent Review Committee will be formed at the State level to review the rents of 1,300 shops directly managed by the board in various areas, he informed.
He alleged that the previous YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) government had not only stalled the development works of the Waqf Board, but also not submitted the utilisation certificate for ₹386-crore funds sanctioned by the Union government. So, the Centre has not sanctioned any new funds. 'The Chief Minister spoke about this issue with the Centre, and worked to resolve the problem soon,' he added.
The Waqf Board chief informed that criminal cases will be filed against the 'Mutawallis' (trustees) who sold out the Waqf lands in the State. He further said that an application was received from the Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC) to set up an MSME park at Mallayapalem in Guntur district, and the land will be leased on a long-term basis without changing the title and ownership.

Delhi govt seeks Rs 950 cr from Centre to boost road infrastructure
The Delhi government has sought Rs 950 crore from the Centre under Central Road Fund (CRF) to upgrade the city's road infrastructure, TOI reported. Public Works Department minister Parvesh Verma said that out of the 1,400 km under his department, 415 km will be taken up for strengthening under the project. Verma said that several roads were in a state of disrepair for the last seven-eight years and were full of potholes and broken stretches. He alleged that the previous government never availed funds to carry out the repair work despite Central assistance being available. "We have decided to completely change the face of the city's roads by taking up massive road strengthening work. We have already repaired over 150km of PWD roads since we formed govt this Feb while another 100km will be completed soon. Our target is to repair at least 500km of city roads this financial year," the minister said, adding that the state government was spending a lot from its own coffers while central assistance had also been sought. Officials told TOI that the arterial roads that fall under the PWD jurisdiction are strengthened every five years. While the money under CRF is available for new projects, officials said, the strengthening of roads can also be taken up under this scheme. Live Events PWD has come up with a long list of roads across its jurisdiction in the city that require repair. They will be resurfaced using central funds. The list has been sent to the Union ministry of roads, transport and highways for its approval. Several stretches of Ring Road and Outer Ring Road, parts of Mathura Road, Mehrauli-Badarpur Road, Mehrauli-Gurgaon Road, Africa Avenue, Barapullah Road, all arterial roads in Najafgarh and various flyovers have been included in the project. The department has mentioned the length of each road, the month and the year it was last repaired and the due date of their resurfacing or strengthening in the project file. While some of these roads are long, measuring 2-5km, many are also small stretches of a few hundred metres. According to Verma, PWD will simultaneously repair footpaths and drains with the state funds. "Earlier, the contractors first used to repair the road, then another contractor would come and repair the footpath, and a third one would dig up the drain to repair it. Now we have decided to give a comprehensive tender to the contractors to repair the roads, footpaths and drains," Verma said. It will be the responsibility of the contractor to carry out the regular maintenance work for the next three-five years, till the time of their next restrengthening.

‘Some BJP MPs also back over Waqf stand': top Muslim body chief on eve of Patna rally
After holding scores of protest meetings against the amended Waqf law across Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and West Bengal, Imarat-e-Shariah, one of the country's leading Muslim organisations, is set to hold a mega rally in Patna's Gandhi Maidan on Sunday to keep the heat on the BJP-led Centre over the row. Imarat-e-Sharia, headquartered in Patna, has rejected the Waqf amendment legislation, calling for its withdrawal. The legislation was passed by Parliament in April. In May, after hearing multiple petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the Waqf Amendment Act, 2025, the Supreme Court reserved its decision on the prayer for interim directions. Speaking to The Indian Express, Imarat-e-Shariah head Faisal Rahmani said: 'Though we have been protesting against the draconian Waqf Amendment Bill right from the start, we want to keep the pressure on the Centre. We have been creating awareness among public about how the Centre's Waqf amendments are against several provisions of the Constitution and Supreme Court rulings. It is nothing but a bid to take away our places of worship and heritage buildings. This law undermines the spirit of brotherhood in the country.' Rahmani said: 'We accept the 1995 Waqf law. Going by the amendments to it, how can one disallow Hindus to donate their land for a good cause? Our records show that there are thousands of educational, medical and social organisations and institutions being run on Waqf land, some of which even have more Hindu beneficiaries in comparison to Muslims. Take for example Maulana Mazharul Haque University in Patna, which has 88% Hindu students in its courses.' He said, 'The Centre summarily rejected our more than 300 representations against the Waqf Bill – we are also rejecting their amended Waqf law.' Calling the Waqf law 'irrational', the Imarat-e-Shariah chief also said: 'What will happen when someone asks for proof of Ashokan pillars or a whole lot of our historical monuments cutting across religions? This law aims at creating enmity among citizens… Public is a great force. It had made the NDA-led central government withdraw three farm laws. Patna rally is just the beginning, we will keep the pressure on the Centre.' Asked about timing of the Imarat-e-Shariah's protests ahead of the upcoming Bihar Assembly polls, Rahmani said they have been seeking support from all parties. 'We are getting calls of solidarity from various political parties. In fact, some BJP MPs have also been supporting our Waqf stand,' he claimed. In March, during Ramzan, Imarat-e-Shariah had given a call to boycott the 'sarkari' Iftar hosted by Chief Minister and JD(U) president Nitish Kumar in Patna. The JD(U) had termed the Imarat-e-Shariah's boycott announcement 'uncalled for'. This was perhaps the first time that a leading Muslim body had made such a move. The Muslim community accounts for over 17% of Bihar's population and is concentrated in Kishanganj, Araria, Purnia, Katihar and Purnia. Several other districts in the state, including Darbhanga, Madhubani, Patna and Nalanda, also have sizeable Muslim population.

Kerala government firm on zumba sessions in schools, says Minister Sivankutty
KOZHIKODE: Expressing the state government's resolve not to be cowed down by opposition from various Muslim organisations to the introduction of zumba sessions in schools, General Education Minister V Sivankutty said controversy over the initiative will only help grow of communalism and sectarianism. Addressing a press conference in Kozhikode on Saturday, the minister said the exercise was introduced to combat drug menace among the youth. The stand of those opposing it will spread poison in society that is more dangerous than drugs, he said. Reacting to the criticism that immodest dresses are made mandatory for zumba in schools, Sivankutty said students practise it in school uniforms. 'It is mandatory for students to participate in the study exercises that are stipulated under the Right to Education Act. Parents have no choice in that and teachers are duty-bound to follow those things under conduct rules,' he said. There were veiled comments from some corners that the government may make a climbdown on the issue in the face of objections raised by some Muslim organisations as it happened in the case of PSC appointments in the Waqf Board and in the issue of gender-neutral uniform. The Kanthapuram factions of Sunnis have also come up against the government's decision. But CPM leaders have intensified their attacks against the organisations which oppose mzumba sessions in schools. DYFI state secretary V K Sanoj extended all support to the government to go ahead with the decision.
