Shining Verstappen shades Piastri for pole at Silverstone
The four-time world champion was struggling with a strong wind and cool and damp conditions after choosing a low downforce set-up that trimmed his wings but enabled higher speed on the straights.
Before his final run of a tense and closely-fought qualifying hour, Verstappen was two-tenths slower than McLaren's championship leader Oscar Piastri, but the Dutchman powered to a fastest lap of one minute and 24.892 seconds to beat the Australian by 0.103 seconds.
"You went motor racing Max!" said his race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase, his deadpan delivery hiding Red Bull's delight as the team fight to find the performance that will ensure their star driver stays with them next year.
The 27-year-old Dutchman, who has declared he wants to stay, has been linked with Mercedes, whose team boss Toto Wolff has confirmed making contact. Unconfirmed Italian media reports this week claimed Verstappen had agreed to the move.
Verstappen did his talking on the track, claiming his third pole at Silverstone and the 44th of the career with a virtuoso lap to keep alive faint hopes of defending his drivers' title in the second half of the season.
Weather permitting, a third British victory would help him trim his 61-point deficit to Piastri but if it rains, as forecast, Verstappen's set-up might leave him vulnerable to his rivals including Lando Norris, in the second McLaren, who is 15 points behind Piastri in the title race and third on the grid.
"The changes helped a lot and the car definitely turned in better," said Verstappen. "On my last lap, it all came together and the balance was much better and we were fast on the straights, but the high-speed corners were more difficult.
"We are pushing for more performance. It was tricky out there with the wind as the car is so sensitive to it. We have to wait to see what tomorrow will do and if there's rain around or not.
"I'm happy with qualifying. It's a big boost for the team as well and I'm excited to go racing tomorrow. We'll try! We are going to have fun and try to do the best we can."
- 'It's tough' -
Piastri was less happy.
"I was trying to think of how I was going to go faster and I didn't," he said. "The last lap was a little bit messy, but it's been tight all weekend.
"I think my first lap was very good...but I left a little bit on the table."
"It's tough, especially when you think it's a good lap. You don't want to overdo it and try and go over the limit. There were a couple of corners where maybe I was a bit safe on the way in and tried to make up for it on the way out and it didn't quite work."
Norris was third in the second McLaren, a tenth adrift.
"It was tough," Norris said. "We are not just fast enough today, but it's all good fun and I am happy with third. Credit to Max, he did a great job. It's going to be fun tomorrow, a good battle."
George Russell was next in a Mercedes. The Ferraris of seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc filled the third row.
Kimi Antonelli was seventh fastest in the second Mercedes but suffered a three-place penalty.

Pogacar beats Van der Poel to win Tour stage four in 100th career victory
Reigning champion Tadej Pogacar overtook race leader Mathieu van der Poel just before the line to win stage four of the Tour de France on Tuesday, and is now level at the top of the general classification after earning his 100th career victory. The 174.2km ride from Amiens to Rouen came down to a sprint finish between the top three in the overall standings, with the Slovenian world champion getting the better of the Dutchman, and Denmark's Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease A Bike) coming in third. Pogacar, the world champion, tried to go it alone, and while Van der Poel retains the yellow jersey, the three-time Tour de France champion hit his milestone win, along with joining the Dutchman at the top of the leader board. 'To win at the Tour is incredible, in this jersey even more, and to have 100 victories is amazing,' Pogacar said. A breakaway group of four riders — Lenny Martinez, Jonas Abrahamsen, Thomas Gachignard and Kasper Asgreen — got away early but the peloton, led by Van der Poel's Alpecin-Deceuninck team, kept them well within reach. 💯 WINS #TDF2025 l @TamauPogi — Tour de France™ (@LeTour) July 8, 2025 The action was always going to come in the closing 50km, with five categorised climbs packed into the finale, and Martinez was the last to be caught with 20km remaining, shortly after a crash had brought down several riders in the bunch. Pogacar's UAE Team Emirates took control at the front coming to the penultimate climb, before Visma-Lease a Bike took over, pushing hard on the descent, as anticipation grew for a late attack. When it came on the final climb, it was the expected break from Pogacar, but he was unable to shake off two-times champion Vingegaard, and the pair were joined by five other riders, including Van der Poel, to set up a high-stakes finish. Van der Poel went first, looking for his second stage win in three days, but Pogacar had the legs to overtake before the line, and made up the four seconds which separated the pair overall thanks to the stage win bonus. 'With so many good riders in the final, you're always a bit on the edge and nervous about what's going to happen,' Pogacar said. 'You never until the final, like today. You get this adrenaline. It's pure racing and I enjoy it.' Vingegaard and Pogacar have won the last five Tours between them, and the Dane remains third overall, eight seconds behind the leading pair.

Ferrari unveils Daytona SP3 Tailor Made for charity auction at Monterey Car Week
Ferrari has revealed a one-off Daytona SP3 to be auctioned by RM Sotheby's during Monterey Car Week in California this August. Created through the Italian carmaker's Tailor Made customisation programme, this unique model features a striking two-tone livery in carbon fibre/Giallo Modena with glossy black elements on the front splitter, side sills and rear diffuser. A full-length Ferrari logotype (also in Giallo Modena) is applied across the upper body, marking the first time the brand has used its logo in this way. The interior features an innovative fabric made from recycled tyres bearing the distinctive Prancing Horse motif, while the dashboard and steering column are constructed from the same lightweight carbon fibre used in Formula 1, underscoring the car's connection to Ferrari's racing heritage. Powered by a 6.5 l naturally aspirated V12 engine producing 618kW and 697Nm, the car carries the designation 599+1, acknowledging it as an extra addition to the sold-out 599-unit run of the Daytona SP3. A bespoke plaque will be fitted to commemorate its singular status. All proceeds from the auction will go to The Ferrari Foundation in support of educational initiatives. Among its recent projects is a partnership with Save the Children, which includes helping rebuild the Aveson Charter School in Altadena, California, after it was destroyed by the Eaton wildfire earlier this year.
