Huggs Coffee goes further in offices, hospitals with B2B line Huggs Professionale, automated brews
This is under its business-to-business (B2B) division Huggs Professionale, which focuses on corporate and healthcare workers.
The chain began in 2008 with cafes in the CBD, offering both traditional Nanyang-style kopi and artisanal Western-style coffee.
After Huggs became established among office workers, the company decided to venture into another industry where caffeine is key: hospitals.
'For us, it is a natural extension – looking outside of the CBD and into hospital spaces,' said Clarissa Choo, brand director of Huggs Coffee and a second-generation leader of the business, which was founded by her father Ron Choo.
Huggs made its first foray into healthcare with a cafe at Tan Tock Seng Hospital in 2017, followed by one at National University Hospital in 2022, and another at the National Cancer Centre Singapore in October 2023.

It was also in 2023 that the company launched Huggs Professionale, offering coffee beans, coffee machines and vending machines – with a selected range of freshly brewed coffee – to businesses.
'This really allows us to diversify our footprint – not just within the retail space, but also in corporate pantries,' said Choo.
In 2024, Huggs opened cafes in Ng Teng Fong General Hospital and Mount Elizabeth Hospital, with the latter also featuring the first Huggs Professionale vending machine.
As hospitals run around the clock, their staff may need coffee at any time of the day. But this has implications for labour costs, Choo noted. 'It's not commercially viable to open our cafe 24/7.'
Vending machines solve this problem. Even after the cafe closes at 5 pm, staff can still get a fresh brew from the vending machine.
Choo looks forward to setting up vending machines in other hospitals while improving both the coffee – with a wider range of blends – and the machines themselves.
For instance, Mount Elizabeth worked with Huggs to create its own coffee blend for staff and patients named 'It's Possible', after the hospital's tagline.
Custom brews
Huggs has already been offering packaged coffee beans for retail in their CBD cafes. But the B2B division allows the company to look at retail and customisation in a 'more structured manner', said Choo.
With corporate offices, for instance, Huggs works with clients' requests for coffee blends and coffee machines.
For those unsure of which blends to stock, Huggs holds blind tasting sessions – similar to those for Mount Elizabeth – where clients can taste Huggs' coffee blends in different variations, as well as non-caffeinated drinks.
'We introduce a realm of different taste profiles and dive into a very extensive R&D (research and development) session,' she said.
These range from fruiter, tropical blends to ones that are thicker and more chocolatey, the director added.
Local and international expansion
Other than corporate clients, Huggs is strengthening its consumer presence, aiming to reach Singapore's speciality coffee drinkers.
In June 2024, Huggs launched its first Sojourner outlet in the Royal Group Building along Phillip Street. The new concept is part of the so-called 'fifth wave' of coffee: modern, business-centred cafes that serve high-quality, artisanal brews.
The aim is to reach more coffee connoisseurs and those who are more 'discerning and adventurous' with their coffee, said Choo.
Sojourner brings in premium beans such as Ethiopia Bensa and those from less common regions such as Papua New Guinea, as well as brewing its own artisanal blends.
A second Sojourner outlet was later opened in private vault The Reserve, and is exclusive to its employees. Similarly, one of the Huggs Coffee cafes is exclusive to Apple employees.
This June, Huggs will open its third Sojourner outlet in Capital Tower, and its 19th Huggs Coffee outlet in Punggol Digital District.
The Punggol branch will include a Huggs Professionale showcase and a vending machine that remains accessible even after the cafe closes for the day.
Choo wanted to live up to the district's name: digitalising the cafe experience, as well as taking the opportunity to showcase Huggs Professionale's automation.
Regionally, Huggs Coffee plans to expand to Malaysia and the Philippines, and is considering Japan and Dubai.
The company is still in preliminary discussions with partners and master franchisees, and has not yet decided which market to enter first.
Obtaining adequate information is key, said Choo. 'Otherwise, it's uncharted territory for us.'
Going abroad may require some adaptation, as the Nanyang-style coffee offered in Huggs outlets here is tailored to the local market.
In overseas ventures, Huggs may have to tweak the intensity and composition of its coffee, such that it is more familiar and attuned to the locals' tastebuds, said Choo.
Overseas menus may incorporate artisanal coffee, as well as the new market's own version of kopi.
'Depending on the market that we penetrate, we need to see what their version of everyday coffee (is), and localise.'

SYDNEY - China is set to expand its influence over South-east Asia's development as the Trump administration and other Western donors slash aid, a study by an Australian think-tank said on July 20. The region is in an 'uncertain moment', facing cuts in official development finance from the West as well as 'especially punitive' US trade tariffs, the Sydney-based Lowy Institute said. 'Declining Western aid risks ceding a greater role to China, though other Asian donors will also gain in importance,' it said. Total official development finance to South-east Asia – including grants, low-rate loans and other loans – grew 'modestly' to US$29 billion (S$37 billion) in 2023, the annual report said. But US President Donald Trump has since halted about US$60 billion in development assistance – most of the United States' overseas aid programme. Seven European countries – including France and Germany – and the European Union have announced US$17.2 billion in aid cuts to be implemented between 2025 and 2029, it said. 'These cuts will hit South-east Asia hard,' it said. 'Poorer countries and social sector priorities such as health, education, and civil society support that rely on bilateral aid funding are likely to lose out the most.' Higher-income countries already capture most of the region's official development finance, said the institute's South-east Asia Aid Map report. Poorer countries such as East Timor, Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar are being left behind, creating a deepening divide that could undermine long-term stability, equity and resilience, it warned. Despite substantial economic development across most of South-east Asia, around 86 million people still live on less than US$3.65 a day, it said. 'Global concern' 'The centre of gravity in South-east Asia's development finance landscape looks set to drift East, notably to Beijing but also Tokyo and Seoul,' the study said. As trade ties with the United States have weakened, South-east Asian countries' development options could shrink, it said, leaving them with less leverage to negotiate favourable terms with Beijing. 'China's relative importance as a development actor in the region will rise as Western development support recedes,' it said. Beijing's development finance to the region rose by US$1.6 billion to US$4.9 billion in 2023 – mostly through big infrastructure projects such as rail links in Indonesia and Malaysia, the report said. At the same time, China's infrastructure commitments to South-east Asia surged fourfold to almost US$10 billion, largely due to the revival of the Kyaukphyu Deep Sea Port project in Myanmar. By contrast, Western alternative infrastructure projects had failed to materialise in recent years, the study said. 'Similarly, Western promises to support the region's clean energy transition have yet to translate into more projects on the ground – of global concern given coal-dependent South-east Asia is a major source of rapidly growing carbon emissions.' Iran could hold nuclear talks with European powers next week, Tasnim reports
DUBAI - Iran, Britain, France and Germany could hold talks next week on Tehran's nuclear programme, Iran's semi-official Tasnim news agency reported on Sunday, following warnings by the three European countries that failure to resume negotiations would lead to international sanctions being reimposed on Iran. "The principle of talks has been agreed upon, but consultations are continuing on the time and place of the talks. The country in which the talks could be held next week has not been finalised," Tasnim reported, quoting a source informed on the matter. The report on possible talks comes a few days after the foreign ministers of the so-called E3 nations, as well as the European Union's foreign policy chief, held their first call with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi since Israel and the U.S. attacked Iranian nuclear facilities a month ago. The three European countries, along with China and Russia, are the remaining parties to a 2015 nuclear deal reached with Iran - from which the United States withdrew in 2018 - that lifted sanctions on the Middle Eastern country in return for restrictions on its nuclear programme. The E3 have said they would restore U.N. sanctions on Tehran via the so-called "snapback mechanism" by the end of August if nuclear talks that were ongoing between Iran and the U.S. before the Israel-Iran air war do not resume or fail to produce concrete results. "If EU/E3 want to have a role, they should act responsibly, and put aside the worn-out policies of threat and pressure, including the 'snap-back' for which they lack absolutely [any] moral and legal ground," Araqchi said earlier this week. ABN Amro analysts see ESG bond issuance dropping ‘considerably'
ISSUANCE of euro-denominated environmental, social and governance (ESG) bonds is likely to see a pronounced decline in 2025, as negative sentiment fanned by political backlash weighs on the market, according to analysts at ABN Amro. ESG issuance is 'expected to considerably lag in 2025', amid 'a noticeable surge in negative news related to ESG in the first half of the year', analysts Marta Ferro Teixeira and Filipa de Carvalho Tomas wrote in a note on Friday (Jul 18). They now see issuance of 247 billion euros (S$369 billion), down from an earlier forecast of 266 billion euros. In 2024, issuance reached 272 billion euros, they said. Interest in financial products claiming to target environmental, social and governance goals is flagging amid politically motivated attacks on so-called 'woke' capitalism, combined with evidence of greenwashing. The global market for ESG funds saw its worst quarter on record in the three months through March, as the broad-based backlash against the investment strategy gains ground. The ABN Amro analysts pointed to US President Donald Trump's decision to declare a national energy emergency as a key reason for the decline, with policies in the world's largest economy now 'prioritising fossil fuels over clean energy initiatives', they wrote. The shift in sentiment has led oil producers such as BP to cut back on their renewable energy programmes, while major banks have been turning their backs on the world's biggest climate alliance for the industry. Such developments raise 'concerns about waning climate commitments', Teixeira and Tomas wrote. ABN Amro's analysis shows that ESG issuance from utilities has fallen short, while sovereign issuance has taken a small hit in part as bond sales under Europe's NextGenerationEU programme lag behind earlier expectations, they wrote. The overall effect is one that the analysts said they 'consider not as negative, given the significant policy shifts in some other Western countries'. Finally, the ABN Amro analysts noted that 'there is a lengthy process for ESG bond issuances, and timing for issuance becomes a key factor during volatile markets, which might have been an additional contributing factor for why issuers have given preference to non-ESG labelled debt'.
