Family speaks after woman killed in Kernersville crash

Yahoo30-05-2025
KERNERSVILLE, N.C. (WGHP) — The family of Isabelle Lawson, who died in the crash over the weekend that sparked the fire at Caudill's Electric Company, spoke with FOX8.
'I understand everything that happened. Everyone is upset about the building, but the building is replaceable. My sister isn't,' Vanessa Lawson said.
The Lawson family said addiction, mental health and bad influences are the deadly combination that led to the situation on Saturday.
Isabelle is accused of stealing a Corvette. Kernersville police officers spotted her driving the stolen car and tried to pull her over, but they say she sped away.
The chase lasted for about three-quarters of a mile and was under one minute long. The officer slowed down, and by the time they caught up with her, the car had crashed and she had died at the scene.
'It just breaks my heart that this situation has happened,' said Nancy Compton, Isabelle's grandma.
'She loved her son and she was trying so hard to do everything she could for him,' Vanessa said.
Isabelle had a troubled past, including a few arrests for drug possession and an ongoing addiction.
'I want everyone to know my daughter is a loving girl, not a thief they make her out to be … She did something wrong, but there were circumstances behind it that people don't know,' said Derek Lawson, Isabelle's dad.
Derek said that over the past year, she started to turn her life around and made better choices.
'Everybody that knows her knows that she just wouldn't go and do this. That there is something that happened that has caused this to happen,' Derek said.
Isabelle's dad spoke with her every day the week leading up to her death, but something seemed off.
'I think this past week she was emotionally troubled … I think that something wasn't right in her head that she made that mistake instead of asking for a phone or something else. She just got there and didn't know what to do and grabbed the keys,' Derek said.
Questions still linger about what went through Isabelle's head, what prompted her to take the car and what happened in the minutes before the crash, but Isabelle's family is certain about two things.
First, they will miss her.
'Because we lost her, she is here no more to see us, talk to us, laugh with us, and I am going to miss her awfully bad,' Compton said.
Second, they know exactly how they will always remember Isabelle.
'When she loved, she loved hard. Anytime you were in a room with her, you knew that she had your back no matter what. She would stand 10 toes right behind you,' Vanessa said.
The Lawson family asks for prayers during this time.

Award winners honoured at Teesside University's graduation ceremonies

A pioneering games developer, an innovative tech entrepreneur, and a healthcare leader were honoured alongside thousands of students during Teesside University's academic awards this month. A total of 17 graduation ceremonies were held at Teesside university from Tuesday, July 8 to Wednesday, July 16, when 4,000 students celebrated their academic achievements. The ceremonies took place in the new £40 million Digital Life building, which is intended to advance teaching and research in fields such as digital media, artificial intelligence, robotics and games design for the Tees Valley and beyond. During the ceremonies, honorary degrees were bestowed on Lee Hutchinson, founder of global gaming giant Double Eleven, and Dean Benson, chief executive of e-commerce powerhouse Visualsoft. Honorary Graduate Derek Bell (Image: Judy Hume) Both are Teesside University graduates and recognised for their groundbreaking work in gaming and tech, having founded and developed their own hugely successful businesses in the region. Also honoured as an honorary graduate was Professor Derek Bell OBE, chair of the University Hospitals Tees group board. Professor Bell, who has made instrumental contributions to healthcare both regionally and nationally, was awarded an OBE in 2018 for services to Unscheduled Care and Quality Improvement. Honorary Graduate Lee Hutchinon (Image: Judy Hume) Professor Bell said: "It's a great privilege to be honoured in this way. "The University's buildings and facilities for students are just exceptional, and I can see how that attracts students from all over the world. "Teesside University's reputation continues to go up and up. "The opportunities are fantastic, along with the opportunity to take the different skills that people have learned at the University out into the wider world. "As I walk across the stage I will be thinking about what an honour it is, but also thinking about the speech I'll be making, celebrating the importance of the University within the local region, particularly in relation to health science training, but also looking to the future. "Hopefully Teesside University will get a new medical school, which I think will be a great boost to the local economy." Mr Hutchinson said: "Teesside has a special place in my heart because it was the place that gave me my degree. "It feels really good to be recognised for the work I've done in the community. "Teesside as a university is really helped by listening to the actual people around it and tailoring their courses to fit exactly with what the actual industry wants. "Having all kinds of digital industry degrees is massively beneficial for us." Speaking during the ceremony where he was awarded his honour, Mr Hutchinson added: "Thank you, Teesside University, for giving me opportunity and for investing in futures that don't yet exist. "Together, let's continue to put Middlesbrough, the North-East, and our University on the global map of creativity and impact." Mr Benson said: "The feeling I get from receiving this award is one of inspiration. "I want to be there for other people and help people related to Teesside to flourish and perhaps be a role model for other people. "Teesside University stands for excellence and an amazing education. "I've dealt with the University all through my life, studying at the University, work placement from school at the University, right the way through to being a Governor at the University and now today with the honorary doctorate, it's an absolute pleasure. "Teesside University holds a massive role within the region, it stands for everything that everyone strives and works for; its morals, its ethics, its education. "What people come out with from the University is a future. "The Digital Life building is absolutely phenomenal. "It's one of the examples of how the University has innovated. It's set the vision, it delivered the vision."

Maple Heights police kill dogs after woman mauled; witnesses say officers saved her life

***Warning: Content in this video may be considered disturbing. Viewer discretion is advised.*** MAPLE HEIGHTS, Ohio (WJW) – Maple Heights police shot and killed two dogs on Sunday afternoon. Witnesses maintain the quick, decisive action by the officers saved the victim's life. Police were called to a home in the 5200 block of Henry Street after residents reported that a woman was being mauled by her two dogs, three-year-old Cane Corsos. The attack was so vicious that the victim pleaded with witnesses to use their cars to break the grip of the two dogs. 'I'm sorry, we just pulled up to my house and we just saw these two dogs attacking this lady. The lady is trying to tell us to run the dogs over but we don't feel comfortable because we might hit her,' a neighbor told the 911 dispatcher. Offensive demonstrations cause outrage in Summit County 'No, no, no, don't run her over!' the dispatcher responded. One of the first officers arriving at the scene realized the woman's life was hanging in the balance and immediately opened fire on the animals. Police body camera video reveals one of the Cane Corsos was killed almost immediately. The second dog was wounded and video from a neighbor's Ring camera showed him running back home. He was put down by officers a short time later. Investigators said the victim, 62-year-old Rhonda Johnson, suffered severe injuries to her left arm, her legs and her chest. Officers rendered first aid at the scene until paramedics arrived and took her by ambulance to MetroHealth Medical Center. Witnesses said the decision by police to quickly neutralize the dogs was life saving. 'Those dogs were chewing, mangling her up and let's say another five minutes, that would have been it for her,' neighbor Thomas Rackliffe told FOX 8. 'It takes a lot to get them off, so he did the right thing. He saved her life,' another neighbor, Rob Searcy, said. Residents on Henry Street said the two dogs had a history of being aggressive. 'They used to jump over the fence, kids come, they would chase the kids around the neighborhood. I had an incident when I first moved in and one of them charged at me. It nipped on my knee, so yes, I wasn't surprised at all,' said Searcy. Tuscarawas County man infected with La Crosse virus Neighbors said they believe the behavior of the two dogs is a reflection of the way they were treated over the past three years. They said the Cane Corsos were brothers and friendly as puppies, but they were neglected for extended periods of time after their original owner was arrested on drug charges. 'They should have been treated like a human and they weren't. Being cooped up in that yard for the last three years and not being taken care of very well. I think that changed them because they used to come over here and I used to pet them all the time. Now look at them,' Rackliffe said. Residents contend that the aggressiveness of the dogs on Sunday was a result of the way they were treated. 'My father has a Cane Corso and he is the most loveable dog that you could possibly meet, but of course depending on each owner, how they're raised can dictate if they're aggressive or not,' said Searcy. 'Whatever breed it is, if you raise them right, they're going to be your best companion.' We are told that Johnson is in stable condition at Metro after undergoing surgery on Sunday.
