Hyberabad Minister Ponnam Prabhakar reviews Hyderabad's monsoon readiness
Prabhakar held a review meeting with Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) managing director K Ashok Reddy and senior officials at the Water Board office in Khairatabad. The meeting focused on the 90-day monsoon plan and ongoing project works.
Prabhakar directed officials, from directors to field staff to remain alert during the monsoon season, particularly regarding drinking water supply and sewage management. Stating that GHMC and the Board have identified 146 waterlogging points for regular monitoring, he instructed officials to prevent sewage overflow and ensure the use of residual chlorine to avoid contamination.
The minister said notices had been issued to 16,000 residents to construct Rain Water Harvesting Structure (RWHS) pits. He urged those owning properties above 300 square yards within ORR limits to comply.
He reviewed the Water Board's financial condition, suggesting measures to boost revenue, curb water wastage and leakages, and take action against illegal sewage connections.
Fresh tenders for streetlights maintenance
Hyderabad: The GHMC Standing Committee has unanimously approved the call for fresh tenders to maintain 5.42 lakh LED streetlights across the city. Until a new agency is finalised, GHMC's Zonal Commissioners will oversee maintenance, procurement and repairs. Following the expiry of its contract with M/s Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) last month, the GHMC Electrical Wing had placed two proposals before the committee: renewing the EESL contract under revised terms or inviting new tenders

Punjab's GST collection in July logs 32% jump
Finance, planning, excise and taxation minister Harpal Singh Cheema on Friday claimed that the state had once again broken records in tax revenue growth, with the Goods and Services Tax (GST) collection registering a net growth of 32.08% in July 2025 compared to the same period last year. Punjab finance minister Harpal Singh (HT) He said for the last three years, the state had been setting record-breaking growth in tax revenue year-on-year and month-on-month. In a press statement, the finance minister highlighted that the net GST revenue collected in July 2025 was ₹2,357.78 crore, a substantial increase of ₹572.71 crore compared to the ₹1,785.07 crore collected in July 2024. He further shared that up to July of the current financial year, net GST revenue had reached ₹9,188.18 crore, marking an increase of ₹2,025.36 crore over the ₹7,162.82 crore collected during the same period in the 2024-25 fiscal year. Cheema attributed this growth to the policies implemented by the Aam Aadmi Party-led Punjab government, which he claimed had fostered a conducive business environment and encouraged tax compliance. He said the department's enforcement actions had also curbed tax evasion, with a focus on providing assistance to honest taxpayers. Cheema revealed that the State Investigation and Preventive Unit (SIPU) recovered ₹156.40 crore in penalties during the first quarter of FY 2025-26. This includes ₹57.43 crore from road checks and ₹98.97 crore from inspections and verifications. Further, SIPU uncovered two significant GST fraud cases, involving ₹2,620.80 crore in fake transactions and estimated tax evasion of ₹296.32 crore, leading to two FIRs in June 2025. The finance minister said the Punjab government's proactive measures had positioned the state among the top performers in tax mobilisation, despite many challenges. He said the state's GST collection growth rate had consistently surpassed the national average, reflecting the effectiveness of the government's policies and initiatives.

Two-day mega job mela begins in Atmakur
Nellore: While asserting the TDP-led coalition government's commitment to providing jobs to the unemployed youth, Atmakur MLA and Endowments Minister Anam Ramanarayana Reddy has said that his ambition was to develop a dry land area like Atmakur by facilitating jobs to unemployed youth. The Endowments Minister along with noted scientist and State government's advisor Gundra Satish Reddy and Collector O Anand inaugurated a two-day mega job mela organised under the aegis of Andhra Pradesh State Development Corporation (APSDC) at Andhra Engineering College in Atmakur town on Friday. Speaking on the occasion, Ramanarayana Reddy said that the dry land area in Atmakur constituency was lagging behind in development for several decades due to unavailability of water and other natural resources. He pointed out that educated youth of Atmakur were migrating to other places for livelihood due to lack of proper job opportunities. The Minister said that to overcome the problem, he has decided to organise the job mela under the aegis of APSDC. National and State-level companies will take part in the two-day event. He said that as many as 90 companies participating in the job mela proposed to provide jobs to around 3,000 unemployed youth. He urged the youth to utilise the opportunity. Noted scientist and State government's advisor Gundra Satish Reddy has said that Anam Ramanarayana has worked hard for organising such a mega job mela. District Collector O Anand said that in the recent period, the administration has provided jobs to as many as 2,000 youth in various companies and some other applications are under consideration. He advised the youth to first join a job whether it is a small or big one, because such an initiative will be like a stepping stone to help them occupy higher positions later.

AP Discoms seek ERC nod to collect true-up charges of Rs 12,771 cr
Vijayawada: The three power distribution companies (discoms) in the state have filed a petition before Andhra Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission (APERC), seeking permission to collect Rs 12,771 crore from consumers through true-up charges. The ERC released the notification asking the public to file their objections/suggestions on the petitions filed by the discoms. The Left parties have demanded that the govt immediately withdraw the proposal. According to the affidavit, SPDCL wants to collect Rs 3,046 crore through true-up charges to recover the actual costs of power supplied from 2019 to 2024. APEPDCL has urged the commission to allow it to collect Rs 7,790 crore, while APCPDCL wants to recover Rs 1,935 crore. The discoms have been collecting fuel and power purchase cost adjustment (FPPCA) charges for the past three years. Recently, the distribution companies filed a petition before APERC seeking ratification of its decision to collect 40 paise per unit, which has been continuing for the past six months. He blamed the previous YSRCP govt for the discoms' move to collect the true-up and FPPCA charges. "The mismanagement and irregularities during the YSRCP regime forced discoms to recover the true-up and FPPCA charges from the consumer. The discoms have filed petitions to collect the dues pertaining to the YSRCP regime," Gottipati claimed. Dismissing the minister's allegations, CPI-M leaders V Srinivasa Rao and Ch Baburao said blaming the previous regime is only a "cover-up act" by the TDP-led NDA govt, and warned of agitations across the state if the discoms did not withdraw the true-up charges notice.
