There's A Gingham Summer Dress For Everyone - Here Are 18 Styles To Shop Now
The gingham summer dress isn't a new invention, and that's what makes it such a worthy addition to your wardrobe – it can be worn season after season, decade after decade. For example, the navy and white shift Jane Birkin sports in 1969 film La Piscine wouldn't look out of place today; nor would the pink gingham dress Brigitte Bardot wore to her wedding in 1959 – minus the crinoline, at least for everyday purposes. Allegedly, it was so widely copied that it led to a shortage of gingham fabric in France.
Miuccia Prada has long been partial to the print, incorporating it into her own wardrobe, as well as her designs for Prada and Miu Miu. The same goes for Rei Kawakubo, who first introduced gingham into the Comme des Garçons lexicon in 1997, as the fabric of choice for the iconic 'lumps and bumps' collection; the print continues to be a key part of the brand's offering today.
If it's good enough for Rei and Miuccia (and Daisy and Sarah Jessica and Olivia), it's good enough for me – and you, dear reader. That's why I've rounded up 18 great gingham summer dresses to see you through the season and for many years to come. From shifts to shirt dresses, midi sundresses to mini smocks, consider this your (gingham) check list.
Do like Olivia Rodrigo and step out in a densely-checked shirt dress. To keep things from looking too scholastic, opt for a deep V-neckline or a form-fitting silhouette and finish with a sleek shoulder bag and cat-eye sunglasses.
When one thinks of gingham, one thinks of prairie dresses. A puff-sleeve midi and ballet flats are a timeless combination for summer, or go flirtier in the itty-bitty mini from Frankie's Bikinis collab with Bella Hadid – perfect with 1990s-inspired mules.
Summer's picnics and garden parties call for a pretty gingham sundress. The fitted bodice and full skirt has a 1950s feel, best contrasted by a pair of modern, minimal sandals or mules.
The pencil dress throws off its corporate associations when rendered in gingham print. Róhe's rendition is practically perfect in every way, and looks particularly good with ballet flats and a basket tote – ideally in a riviera setting.
The smock dress has our hearts, especially when it's made mini and adorned with gingham checks. Do like ELLE UK's Daisy Murray and wear If Only If's Brigitte dress with the matching headscarf and fisherman sandals.
SS25 sees the return of the Sixties-ish shift. Hunza G's halter style doubles as a dress and beach cover-up – wear it with the coordinating bikini and citrus-coloured flip flops.

Caitlin Clark's stylish arrival steals the WNBA All-Star spotlight
Caitlin Clark didn't need to touch the court to make an impact during the WNBA All-Star festivities. The Indiana Fever rookie was ruled out of the game due to a groin injury that has been bothering her for several weeks. She also missed the league's 3-Point Contest despite being named a captain for the weekend. Even off the court, Caitlin Clark makes headlines But when Clark arrived at the event, all eyes were on her, and not for anything basketball-related. Sporting a sharp black blazer over a crisp white button-down, she layered in a graphic tee tucked neatly into structured black shorts. A wide belt with a square pouch detail cinched her look together, and she completed the ensemble with black pointed-toe heels. Social media lit up immediately after images of Clark's outfit surfaced. 'She stole the show,' one user wrote. 'Caitlin looks fantastic,' another fan added. Others chimed in with praise, calling the outfit 'Prada-worthy' and comparing her entrance to that of a CEO showing up to run the league herself. MORE: WNBA star has plan for $52,575 cash from WNBA All-Star Weekend Injury Update Clark has now missed 11 games this season, an unusual run of absences for a player who's known for her durability. Even with the missed time, she's still been producing at a high level, averaging 16.5 points, 5 rebounds, and nearly 9 assists per game. The All-Star break gave her some added rest, but there's still no firm timetable on when she'll be back to full strength. For now, she's still managing the groin injury that forced her off the court during one of the league's biggest weekends. Whether she's suited up or sidelined, one thing is clear: Caitlin Clark continues to be the main attraction. Playful Blush And Juicy Lip Oils: Dior Unveils New Backstage Make-Up Collection
It's no secret that the backstage of a fashion show has long been the birthplace of novel make-up techniques and soon-to-be-viral beauty trends. Whether make-up artists are flexing their creativity or teasing new product launches, this is where experts come together to dictate the make-up trends that will soon monopolise our feeds, and the behind-the-scenes tip and tricks we'll soon want to emulate in our own daily routines. This was the driving force behind Christian Dior's Backstage Collection which launched to great fanfare in 2018, giving us a taste of backstage beauty favourites and the formulas that not only withstand the runway but speak to the beauty zeitgeist, whether that's glossy, high-shine textures or bold, forward-thinking trends. The first was a face and body foundation that withstood bright lights and maintained a luminous glow that centred upon skin health rather than the concealing, caking and covering that was monopolising at the time. Years later and Dior has unveiled a new make-up collection that speaks to a growing trend for playful, juicy textures. Fronted by Jenna Ortega - who is the new face of the new collection - the latest make-up spans a glossy lip oil, an innovative powder blush, and a unique glow-enhancing stick, which all feature in a series of fun, ebullient colours. 'The concept of the Backstage Collection was to apply the expertise that you find backstage to make-up – think of it as a professional make-up artist giving you all the tools to apply your make-up at home.' shares Peter Philips, Christian Dior's Creative and Image Director. 'This new collection is far more delicious, and playful than anything we've built before,' he adds. The three-part collection is a nod to social media's fascination with glossy, glass skin textures and a resurgence of vibrant colour within make-up. The first is a Rosy Glow Stick which Philips explains reacts to the natural pH in your skin (resulting in either cool pink or warm coral undertones) and creates a beautiful wash of bespoke colour and a luminous glow. Dior has also expanded its lip range with a millennial-friendly Lip Glow Butter – this isn't the sticky, high-shine gloss of old, however; it's infused with skin-boosting peptides and nourishing squalane for long-lasting hydration. Finally - and already a firm favourite among the ELLE UK beauty team - Backstage Rosy Glow leaves a soft matte finish to skin, but unlike its counterparts, the formula adds a wash of colour that's hydrating and smooth. 'The Lip Glow Butters and blushers all react to your own pH; the aim here is to have a collection that's truly yours and a unique and personal formula for everyone,' shares Philips.
