Renewable energy sector rides high on structural growth, policy support

Focus Malaysia18-07-2025
AFTER a strong CGPP award cycle in late calendar year 2024 (CY24), which lifted Hong Leong Investment Bank (HLIB) 's aggregate coverage orderbooks to RM1.4 bil.
The ongoing awards of LSS5 EPCC contracts has further lifted aggregate coverage orderbook to RM1.65 bil.
'As we had earlier highlighted, EPCC contract conversion for the LSS programme is seen to be significantly quicker than the CGPP programme leading to faster orderbook replenishment,' said HLIB regarding the renewable energy sector.
Meanwhile, continued robust take-up in the recently expired Net Energy Metering 3.0 (NEM 3.0) programmes help to sustain higher margin C&I project flows in respective orderbooks of solar players.
The SELCO programme will provide C&I players with an avenue to reduce electricity costs for the remainder of CY25.
We reckon the sector will continue to benefit from the pipeline of large scale of RE programmes like LSS5, LSS5+ (2GW), MyBeST and LSS6. We are estimating that potential EPCC value of RM10-15 bil assuming that LSS6 is 2GW.
Note that there is upside to such estimates since LSS6 could feature BESS integration. The slew of programme rollouts is expected to grow orderbooks in the RE segment over the next 12 months.
Adding to this, there is also 190MW FiT small hydro and bioenergy bids to be called later of the year and could translate into EPCC contracts for bioenergy players.
To this end, we view Solarvest's target of hitting RM2 bil orderbook in FY03/26 as a conservative target; the company has consistently secured 30-40% share of large scale solar programmes.
The solar module market remains sluggish with average selling price ( ASP)s languishing sideways at ~USD9 cents/Watt, staying weak due to oversupply conditions.
We attribute such accommodative costs as key to rapidly declining LSS bid tariffs, estimated at an average of -22% since LSS4. Modules prices are expected to stay weak on the back of excess manufacturing capacity.
Along similar lines, BESS systems are also experiencing downward trending price per MWh, declining by -20% over the past year.
This enhances economics of BESS integrated solar deployments. Prevailing cost dynamics are strategic for government's pursuit of NETR goals.
We make no changes to our overweight sector rating. We like the sector riding on strong structural themes as well as positive earnings growth cycle.
Key catalysts include contract rollout, CRESS, fresh RE quotas and export news flow. Risks: execution, slower-than-expected DC builds and cost pressure. —July 18, 2025

BAT Malaysia's solid 2Q FY2025 earnings spurs its long-awaited share price recovery

BRITISH American Tobacco (M) Bhd rebounded today (July 29) from a slew of poor earnings doldrums after Malaysia's only listed tobacco player chalked up a 40.4% surge in net profit to RM50.95 mil for its 2Q FY2025 ended June 30, 2025 (2Q FY2024: RM36.28 mil). At the close of today's mid-day trading, the counter emerged Bursa Malaysia's top gainer after surging 33 sen or 7.22% to close at RM4.90 with 790,400 shares traded, thus valuing the group at RM1.4 bil. Earlier in the morning, BAT Malaysia's share price had touched an intra-day high of RM5.05 prior to succumbing to profit taking. The DBL KLCI was up 0.67 points or 0.04% at the mid-day break despite earlier hitting an intra-day high of 1,537.62. Despite its improved net earnings, it has to be borne in mind that BAT Malaysia's 2Q FY2025 revenue retreated 2.45% to RM624.75 mil from RM640.46 mil. The latest quarterly profit pushed up BAT Malaysia's net earnings for the 1H FY2025 period by 12% to RM74.22 mil (1H FY2024: RM66.27 mil) but its revenue shrunk 10% to RM946.74 mil (1H FY2024: RM1.05 bil). The group declared a second interim ordinary dividend of 12 sen/share (2Q FY2024: 12 sen/share) amounting to RM34.3 mil which is payable on Sept 4. This brings the total dividend payout as of 1H FY2025 to 19.5 sen/share (1H FY2024: 22 ssen/share). Year-to-date (YTD), share of BAT Malaysia has fallen 34.3% (from RM7.46 on Jan 2) amid weak sales performance. 'Our 2Q FY2025 results demonstrate the resilience of our combustibles portfolio even in a highly competitive market environment, thus signalling that we're heading in the right strategic direction,' commented BAT Malaysia's managing director Nedal Salem. 'Dunhill continues to stand out as the leading brand in Malaysia, gaining further momentum this quarter. 'This leadership reflects not only the strength of our portfolio but also our unwavering commitment to stand out in quality, continuous innovation and brand heritage built over 60 years.' In a related development, Nedal farther revealed that Malaysia's tobacco black market also saw a decline of 0.4 percentage point at 54.4% in 2Q FY2025 from the previous quarter. 'This was largely contributed by the work done by the Royal Malaysians Customs Department, of which we continue to applaud their efforts in combating illicit trade in Malaysia,' he added. – July 29, 2025

PublicInvest initiates HE Group at 'Neutral', sets target price at 37 Sen

KUALA LUMPUR: PublicInvest Research has initiated coverage on HE Group Bhd, an electrical engineering service provider, with a "Neutral" rating and a target price of 37 sen. The target price is based on 12 times earnings per share for financial year 2026 (FY26), reflecting a 25 per cent discount to industry peers and the Kuala Lumpur Construction Index, given HE Group's smaller market capitalisation and lack of diversification in earnings. Listed on the ACE Market of Bursa Malaysia since Jan 30 last year, the company is currently seeking a transfer to the Main Market, aiming to elevate its corporate profile. The company specialises in power distribution systems for end-user premises and boasts an established client base, particularly among multinational corporations in the semiconductor, medical device and electronics manufacturing sectors. Despite its solid track record, HE Group has yet to secure a significant foothold in the data centre (DC) space, an area it is actively targeting. Leveraging its expertise in substation development and industrial power systems, the company is positioning itself to tap into Malaysia's growing DC industry, which is closely intertwined with the semiconductor sector. "The growing DC industry in Malaysia is expected to drive demand for advanced semiconductor chips, creating a connection between these two critical sectors that are important to HE Group. "Renewable energy (RE) sector also presents an emerging opportunity, as supportive government policies accelerate RE adoption, particularly driving interest in battery energy storage systems. "HE Group is able to leverage its expertise in power distribution system for the RE industry as its strong fundamental knowledge in energy delivery closely aligns with the technical demand for BESS projects," PublicInvest added. The firm expects a three-year net profit compound annual growth rate of six per cent for the period FY24 to FY27, driven by stable contribution from the electrical equipment hook-up and retrofitting and power distribution system segments. It currently holds an outstanding orderbook of RM68.7 million and is eyeing RM50 million in replenishment for FY25, with a tender book valued at RM675 million. PublicInvest, however, flagged several key risks, including the highly fragmented mechanical and electrical industry, intensifying competition and macro challenges stemming from global trade tensions and cyclical downturns in end-user industries. "We like HE Group's proven execution in the semiconductor space and believe its skillsets are transferable to the DC segment. "However, without clear visibility on job wins in new verticals and amid external headwinds, we are cautious in the near term," the firm said.

Penang remains top exporting state in June, Selangor leading importer

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia's total trade for June 2025 amounted to RM234.9 billion with exports and imports recording RM121.7 billion and RM113.1 billion, respectively, the Department of Statistics Malaysia reported today. Chief Statistician Malaysia Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said exports in June decreased RM4.4 billion (-3.5%) compared to the same month of the previous year. The decrease was attributed to lower exports in most states such as Johor (down RM3.3 billion), Sarawak (RM1.8 billion), Kedah (RM1.6 billion), Selangor (RM1.2 billion), Terengganu (RM743 million), FT Kuala Lumpur (RM491.4 million), Pahang (RM312.9 million), FT. Labuan (RM277.3 million), Perak (RM209 million) and Negeri Sembilan (RM54.7 million). However, exports increased in Penang (up RM4.9 billion, Sabah (RM414.3 million), Malacca (RM372 million), Kelantan (RM69.5 million) and Perlis (RM2.9 million). Penang remained as the top exporter with a contribution of 39.5%, followed by Johor 18.6%, Selangor 16.9%, Sarawak 5.3% and FT Kuala Lumpur 4%). Looking at import performance by state, Mohd Uzir said imports in June 2025 increased RM1.4 billion (1.2%) compared to the same month in 2024. The increase was attributed to higher imports in Penang (up RM3.4 billion), Johor (RM1.5 billion), FT Kuala Lumpur (RM890.4 million), Sabah (RM254.5 million), Perak (RM108 million), FT. Labuan (+RM27.8 million) and Kelantan (+RM11.8 million). However, imports decreased in Negeri Sembilan (down RM1.3 billion, Kedah (RM980 million), Malacca (RM954.9 million), Selangor (RM903.4 million),Terengganu (RM246.7 million), Sarawak (RM16.9 million), Pahang (RM753.3 million), Perlis (RM87.2 million). Selangor dominated Malaysia's imports with a share of 24.4%, followed by Johor 24.3%, Penang 23.7%, FT. Kuala Lumpur 8.3% and Kedah 5.4%. Meanwhile the Statistics Department said in a separate statement that Malaysia's export unit value index in June 2025 registered an increase of 2.1% to 151.2 points from 148.0 points in the previous month. Meanwhile, the import unit value index fell 0.4% from 124.8 points to 124.4 points. Malaysia's terms of trade rose by 2.5% month-on-month to 121.5 points in June. Mohd Uzir said the export unit value index's 2.1% increase in June was primarily driven by rises in the indices of miscellaneous manufactured articles (+0.8%), food (+0.3%) and machinery & transport equipment (+0.2%). However, the export volume index dropped by 5.9% in line with the decrease in the indices for manufactured goods (-19.3%), chemicals (-10.3%) and miscellaneous manufactured articles (-5.4%). The seasonally adjusted export volume index dropped by 12% from 166.1 points to 146.1 points. In an annual comparison, the export unit value index and the volume index went down by 0.005% and 3.5% respectively. The import unit value index's 0.4% drop in June was contributed by declines in the indices for mineral fuels (-1.1%), chemicals (-0.5%) and machinery & transport equipment (-0.2%). The import volume index dropped by 9.8% in June compared to the previous month, contributed by decreases in the indices for machinery & transport equipment (-16.4%), food (-13.1%) and manufactured goods (-8.8%). The seasonally adjusted import volume index decreased by 10.8% from 232.8 points to 207.8 points. A year-on-year comparison showed that the unit value index edged down by 4.7% while the volume index edged up by 11.8%. Malaysia's terms of trade soared 2.5% month-on-month to 121.5 points in June, driven by increases in the index of miscellaneous manufactured articles (+0.8%), machinery & transport equipment (+0.4%) and food (+0.3%). In addition, Malaysia's terms of trade rose 4.5% year-on-year from 116.3 points in June of the previous year.
