Aussie starlet makes swift exit from US Open warm-up

Perth Now2 days ago
Maya Joint's first match as she builds up to the US Open has ended in disappointment, being well beaten by Canada's Leylah Fernandez in the DC Open.
Australia's teenage starlet lost 6-3 6-3 in one hour 20 minutes on a baking 30C degree day in Washington.
Joint will be going to Flushing Meadows amid raised expectations after an impressive first half of the season - and the knowledge that last year she came through qualifying and reached the second round in New York.
Defeat robbed her of useful match practice on the hardcourts but having been born in Michigan and lived there until she was 16 the 19-year-old is well versed on the surface in north America.
It is a measure of her progress that this time last year Joint was playing WTA 125s and ITF events in Europe.
She then played a couple of ITFs in America before entering US Open qualifying.
This year she will gain direct entry to the main draw at at Flushing Meadow having risen 97 places in a year to 38th in the world.
Fernandez is ranked two places higher, but the gap looked bigger as she dominated their first meeting on a very sparsely attended Stadium court.
Perhaps deflated by the lack of atmosphere Joint rarely troubled her 22-year-old opponent, forcing one break point, which she failed to take.
Fernandez, who reached the US Open final in 2021 but has only won one main draw match in New York since, was ahead on most metrics, notably serving in which she hit five aces to Joint's none, while the Australian double-faulted five times and the Canadian twice.
Joint is the only Australian in the WTA 500 event, which has Americans Jessica Pegula, who Fernandez will now play, and Emma Navarro as top seeds.
The main attractions, though, are the returning Venus Williams and two-time US Open champ Naomi Osaka, both of whom start their campaign on Tuesday.
Williams has added her name to the US Open mixed doubles list, paired with Reilly Opelka, with Wimbledon runner-up Amanda Anisimova also putting her name forward partnering Holger Rune.
As they suggested at Wimbledon, Alex de Minaur and his fiancee Katie Boulter have also entered the new-style format.
There are now 25 duos on the entry list with the deadline a week away. The top eight pairs with the highest combined singles rankings will gain entry along with eight wild-card partnerships. The latter could include Naomi Osaka and Nick Kyrgios who have applied.
Meanwhile, in Europe, Astra Sharma lost in the first round of the WTA 250 in Prague, beaten 7-6 (8-6) 6-3 by American ninth seed Ann Li.
Other seeds Rebecca Sramkova (2), Marie Bouzkova (5) and Alycia Parks (8) also went through.

Sinner joins forces again with former fitness coach

Wimbledon champion Jannik Sinner has confirmed he has reappointed his former fitness coach Umberto Ferrara with immediate effect. Italian world No.1 Sinner parted ways with Ferrara and physiotherapist Giacomo Naldi last year after the investigation into his positive tests for the banned substance clostebol in March. "The decision has been made in alignment with Jannik's management team as part of ongoing preparations for upcoming tournaments, including the Cincinnati Open and US Open," a statement from Sinner's team said on Wednesday. "Umberto has played an important role in Jannik's development to date, and his return reflects a renewed focus on continuity and performance at the highest level." In February, Sinner received a three-month ban agreed with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). Sinner, who returned to action in May and lost to Carlos Alcaraz in the French Open final before beating him to win Wimbledon, said clostebol, which can build muscle mass, entered his system after Naldi applied an over-the-counter spray to a cut on his own hand before carrying out treatments on Sinner. The spray had been given to Naldi by trainer Ferrara. Sinner was cleared of fault or negligence by an independent tribunal, which accepted he had inadvertently been contaminated with the substance. Speaking at last year's US Open, Sinner explained his decision to part ways with Ferrara and Naldi. "Now, because of these mistakes, I'm not feeling that confident to continue with them. I was struggling a lot in the last months. I was waiting for the result. The only thing I need right now is some clean air," he said. Ferrara, who had laid the blame for the incident on Naldi, worked with Sinner's fellow Italian Matteo Berrettini this year.

Champion Chook: Poultry show veteran Margeret Fraser wins top title at Narrogin Poultry Society Championship

The Narrogin Poultry Society crowned Margeret Fraser's Langshan as its 2025 champion chicken out of more than 100 birds from across WA on Saturday. National poultry judge Peter Strike selected the top of the flock comprised of 130 birds, with breeds including Langshan, Australian game fowl, old English game, silkie's and more. Travelling from Kendenup, Ms Fraser won best in show for her Langshan chook and Andrew Ryall was runner-up. Ms Fraser said she loved attending poultry shows and had entered her own chickens into competitions for about 35 years. 'It's not just about the chooks, it's the people,' she said. 'Over the years I've met some really lovely people.' Narrogin Poultry Society president Owen Gath said the quality of chickens gunning for the best show title was 'exceptional'. 'The show this year has had some exceptional birds,' he said. 'Peter the judge said he can't believe how many really good birds there are. 'There's a lot of birds here that would win at any of the shows.' Mr Gath said the shows are also a great chance to meet new breeders and trade chickens. Ms Fraser also was triumphant in the bantam soft feather heavy and pairs divisions, while Mr Ryall had the best bantam hard feather. Winners from the remaining seven divisions were I.M Baytun in large heavy breed, G. Critchlow for light breed, bantam soft feather light victor was P. Smedley, S. Langford had success in large hard feather, and waterfowl where prize ducks and geese got to shine, and E. Dobson was the junior winner.
