Explained: Is Shubman Gill in trouble for sporting Nike vest in Birmingham Test?

India Todaya day ago
Shubman Gill dominated the headlines across the cricket world with his record-breaking show with the bat in India's second Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy againt England in Birmingham. With a daddy hundred in each innings of the Test, he rewrote record books, leading India's sensational comeback after the defeat in the series opener in Leeds.Amid his purple patch with the bat in England, Gill also made headlines for an off-field choice that sparked widespread discussion. Leading India as Test captain, Gill oversaw his first-ever declaration during the 83rd over of India's second innings on Saturday in Birmingham. Birmingham Test, Day 5 UpdatesadvertisementWith more an hour left in the day's play, Gill declared India's second innings on 427 for 6, setting England a Himalayan target of 608. Yet, it wasn't just the timing of the declaration that drew attention, it was what he was wearing when he made it.
Gill appeared in the dressing room to signal the declaration to teammates Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar, who were batting in the middle. Wearing a black Nike vest, he called in his teammates from the field. The sight raised eyebrows, given the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has an exclusive sponsorship agreement with Adidas, Nike's direct competitor—running until March 2028.According to the deal, India's cricket kits, across the men and women's teams and across all age groups, will be sponsored by Adidas. As images of Gill's Nike-clad declaration circulated online, fans quickly began to question whether the young captain may have inadvertently breached the BCCI's commercial obligations. The Nike logo, clearly visible across his chest, sparked a wave of social media reactions, some critical, others tongue-in-cheek, but all noting the implications. While top apparel manufacturers are strict about their big-money deals, it remains to be seen if Gill will be penalised. One fan said: "I know the inner is a personal gear and not part of the kit that Adidas provides, but back in 2006-07, Ganguly was penalised for sporting a Puma headband when the Nike was the kit sponsor."While the vest incident continued to make waves online, Gill was simultaneously putting in one of the greatest batting performances by an Indian in Test history. In the first innings, he scored a commanding 269, his highest Test score to date, laced with 30 boundaries and three sixes. He followed it up with another century in the second innings, taking his match tally past Sunil Gavaskar's long-standing record of 344 runs in a single Test—set back in 1971 against the West Indies.Gill reached the landmark during the second session on Day 4, when he drove Shoaib Bashir for two runs to etch his name into the record books. With that, he not only became the Indian with the most runs in a single Test but also the eighth from the country to score centuries in both innings of a Test match.advertisementWhat's more, he joined elite company as only the third Indian captain to achieve the feat, following in the footsteps of Sunil Gavaskar (1978) and Virat Kohli (2014).It was a performance that underscored Gill's potential, not just as a batsman of rare class, but as a leader capable of delivering under pressure as he led the fightback from the Indian team, which was demoralised after losing the first Test, despite scoring 800 runs.- EndsTune InMust Watch

'Jurassic World: Rebirth' box office collection Day 4 – Scarlett Johansson starrer sees major drop, earns Rs 4.25 crore on first Monday

After a roaring start over the weekend, Jurassic World: Rebirth witnessed a significant dip in collections on its first Monday. The Scarlett Johansson-led dinosaur thriller managed to earn an estimated Rs 4.25 crore on Day 4, marking a sharp drop from its Sunday collection of Rs 16.25 crore, according to reports on The film opened on Friday with a strong collection of Rs 9.25 crore, saw growth over Saturday with Rs 13.5 crore, and peaked on Sunday. Its three-day opening weekend stood at an impressive Rs 39 crore net. According to the film's production house, the movie opened to an extraordinary start, with a massive box office collection of Rs 49.3 crores in the Indian release weekend. With this, the film's box office total even surpassed the opening weekend numbers of Jurassic World: Dominion (Rs 44 crore gross in India). However, Monday's decline from the weekend high signals the usual weekday slump, raising questions about how the film will sustain through the week. The overall India net collection now stands at approximately ₹43.25 crore after four days. Language-wise, the English version continues to dominate with Rs 18.5 crore over the weekend, followed by the Hindi dub at Rs 13.5 crore. The Tamil and Telugu versions together contributed Rs 6.2 crore. Monday's drop was visible across all language markets. This action-packed new chapter sees an extraction team venture into the most dangerous place on Earth, an island research facility for the original Jurassic Park, inhabited by the most uncontrollable giants that were left behind. Audience word-of-mouth remains mixed, with some praise coming in for Johansson's performance and the film's visual spectacle, but some criticism was directed at the predictable plot. The coming days will be crucial for the film's long-term run, especially with new releases like the superhero movie 'Superman' lined up for release later this week.

After getting KL Rahul (2) early, a 80-run stand between Yashasvi Jaiswal (87 in 107 balls, with 13 fours) and Karun Nair (31 in 50 balls, with five fours) helped India gain some footing in the match. Skipper Shubman Gill had valuable partnerships of 203 runs with Ravindra Jadeja (89 in 137 balls, with 10 fours and a six) and a 144-run stand against Washington Sundar (42 in 103 balls, with three fours and a six), helping India towards 587, scoring 269 in 387 balls himself, with 30 fours and three Bashir (3/167) was the pick of the bowlers for England, while Chris Woakes and Josh Tongue also managed two each. In England's first innings, India had them on the ropes with 84/5. However, a 303-run stand between Harry Brook (158 in 234 balls, with 17 fours and a six) and wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith (184* in 207 balls, with 21 fours and four sixes) sent India on an endless hunt for leather and answers. However, Siraj (6/70) and Akash Deep (4/88) got something out of the new ball and tumbled down the last five wickets for 20 runs, bundling them down for 407 runs, gaining a 180-run lead. India's response was a swift half-century partnership between Jaiswal (28 in 22 balls, with six fours) and KL Rahul, who also continued his good run with a 10-boundary-filled 55 in 84 balls. A 110-run stand for the fourth wicket between Rishabh Pant (65 in 58 balls, with eight fours and three sixes) and Gill upped the attack, while Gill managed yet another epic 175-run stand with Jadeja, scoring 161 in 162 balls, with 13 fours and eight sixes. Jadeja scored an unbeaten 69* in 118 balls, with five fours and a six. India declared at 427/6, leading by 607 runs and setting England a monstrous 608 runs to win.
