Connor Bedard Scores In Overtime; Blackhawks Win 4-3

Yahoo08-03-2025
CHICAGO - The trade deadline came and went in the National Hockey League. The Chicago Blackhawks had a Friday night game that followed at United Center against the Utah Hockey Club.
Just :56 into the first period, former Blackhawk Nick Schmaltz scored. Outside of some pushing, shoving, and a Ryan Donato vs Michael Carcone tilt, the rest of the opening frame was uneventful. Utah took that 1-0 lead to the first intermission.
Donato, who was notably not traded, wanted to remind everyone of that fact. Besides his fight, he looked motivated to make an impact right out of the gate.
About halfway through the second period, Connor Bedard hit the post with a shot. The United Center crowd jumped to their feet in celebration but play continued. Before they could even realize that the goal didn't count, Wyatt Kaiser found himself with the puck in the slot and he scored with a beautiful shot.
Connor Bedard has been in a little bit of a scoring slump lately so collecting an assist on Wyatt Kaiser's goal had to feel good for him. We know what he's capable of offensively so it's all about getting that confidence back. This assist was a good start.
Just a couple of minutes later, Ilya Mikheyev scored a beautiful goal of his own to put the Blackhawks in front. After a somewhat lackluster first period, the Hawks were starting to find their groove.
At 14:30 of the same middle period, Frank Nazar was awarded a penalty shot as Mikhail Sergachev held him on a breakaway. He put a beautiful move on Karel Vejmelka and the Hawks had a 3-1 lead going into the second intermission. Nazar's goal made it three goals in five minutes.
In the third period, the Utah Hockey Club made it interesting when John Marino's first of the season cut the lead to one with plenty of time left.
Later on in the final frame, Connor Bedard took a penalty to put Utah on the power play. Clayton Keller took advantage with a perfectly placed one-timer shot top shelf. Mikhael Sergachev did a wonderful job of creating the room to send a pass to Keller who didn't miss.
No more goals were scored in regulation and overtime was required. That makes it two straight games with overtime at the United Center.
In the extra period, after exchanging chances for a few minutes, Connor Bedard scored the game-winner to give Chicago their third win in four games. His 17th goal of the season was much needed as his drought is now completely over.
Bedard should be proud of the way he played in this game. He was making great passes, creating chances for himself and his teammates, and scored the game-winner in addition to his assist.
Bedard needs to have a strong finish to the season. He is more than capable of putting up points in bunches and this game was proof of that. Confidence is key and he looked confident against Utah.
Spencer Knight made his second start in a Blackhawks uniform. Just like his first start, he gave his team a chance to win throughout the game until they scored the goals they needed.
Knight's 36 saves on 39 shots isn't the shiny "First Star of the Game" performance that he had last week but it is more than enough. With the game on the line in overtime, he came up large on two Utah shots before Bedard ended it.
Chicago will now hit the road for four straight games. It starts with a trip to Tennessee to play the Nashville Predators on Saturday night. It's the second half of a back-to-back so they need a better start in that one. With the young legs they have in the lineup, it shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Pilot pulls off pre-flight surprise for his grandmother

An unsuspecting grandmother got a heartwarming pre-flight surprise aboard her plane to go visit her grandson, who, little did she know, was already waiting in the cockpit to fly her there himself. Airline captain Justin Shurtz, a St. George, Utah-based pilot, told ABC News' Salt Lake City affiliate KTVX that although he wasn't originally scheduled to fly that particular route, he wanted to do something special for his grandmother's first trip out to see him. Shurtz found out his grandmother Carolyn's itinerary with American Airlines and took the wheel to help pull off a surprise aboard the final leg of her trip to Las Vegas via Chicago. "Part of that, I had to contact the crew that was operating the flight, so I called the captain, and I said, 'Hey, I have a question, and I need some help.'" Shurtz told KTVX. "She knew I was working. She was expecting me to pick her up in Las Vegas. She had no idea that I was going to show up on her flight," he added. A video shot by Gina Abinet, obtained by ABC News, captured the moment Shurtz delivered the special message over the intercom. "This is a very special flight for me," Shurtz said on the plane. "So, my grandparents raised me... they've done everything they could to help me get to where I am today." "This amazing crew that I'm flying with here today was able to help me pull it off to where my grandmother got the opportunity to fly with me to Chicago today," he continued. Shurtz said the moment she realized it was him was a moment he'll never forget. "She jumps out into the aisle and sees me standing there and the look on her face -- at that point, that's when I got nervous," he said. "I was extremely excited because it sunk in that this is real. This is actually happening." His grandmother Carolyn told the ABC News station, "I know how hard we struggled and how well they're doing -- so that was my biggest thing, just how proud he made me at that moment." He reiterated that the unwavering support of his grandparents got him to where he is today. "They supported me my entire life -- going through school, everything that we did in life, they were there backing us, pushing us to be the best of our potential, be who we could be," he said.

Former Colorado football walk-on turned fan favorite makes emotional career decision

Former walk-on running back Charlie Offerdahl is one of the many feel-good stories of Deion Sanders' tenure as Colorado's head coach. Offerdahl is one of the last players remaining from the previous regime, but perhaps surprisingly, is also a player with whom Sanders has a close relationship. On Tuesday morning, he made the emotional decision to retire from football due to serious concussion issues. The Colorado native was awarded a scholarship by Sanders last spring and played in 13 games for the Buffs last season, but his latest concussion was too much to overcome. In a speech to the entire Colorado football program, Offerdahl announced his decision. "Obviously, I haven't been here this summer," Offerdahl said in a video posted to Sanders' Instagram account. "If it's not obvious already, I won't be coming back this year. How serious this last concussion was and how many I've had leading up to it is pretty scary for me and my family, but I will be hanging it up." Offerdahl's freshman season was Colorado's 1-11 year in 2022, where he racked up 37 carries for 150 yards, which were the most for a walk-on in program history. He scored his only career touchdown last season against Utah. Offerdahl also announced that he is in the process of applying for dental school, and Sanders believes he can get his now former player some help on that front. "I love this man to life," Sanders said. "You guys know how I feel about the 'OBs,' the Original Buffs. If there's somebody out there that's in control of a dental school, I want to make sure we take care of him." After Sanders was not done making Offerdahl feel like family, he also announced the program would continue to honor Offerdahl's scholarship for the remainder of his time at Colorado. While the decision and announcement were an emotional moment for the entire Buffaloes' program, the loss will be felt on the field as well. Whether it was a missed opportunity in the transfer portal or not, Colorado did not bring in a true starting running back after the departure of Isaiah Augustave. Returning players like Micah Welch and Dallan Hayden look like the top two candidates, while incoming gadget-type players like Simeon Price and DeKalon Taylor are the depth options. Colorado opened fall camp Monday, and along with the quarterback battle, the running back room will be one to watch as practices ramp up. Follow Charlie Strella on X, Threads and Instagram.
