Regular train service resumes after 2-hour disruption between Napier, Great World MRT stations

Yahooa day ago
SINGAPORE – Regular train services have resumed after a signalling fault at the Orchard station on the Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL) caused a two-hour disruption between Napier and Great World stations on the morning of July 1.
The Orchard station is between Napier and Great World stations on the TEL.
Train operator SMRT first informed commuters of the issue at around 6.15am. It later advised commuters to take alternative lines to the city area. In a Facebook update at 8.19am, it said that regular train services had resumed, and thanked affected commuters for their understanding and patience. At 8.30am, the operator ceased regular bus services and bridging bus services, which it had offered since the start of the disruption.
Earlier, at 6.55am, SMRT had said the fault started 'at the start of service' on July 1, and that its engineers were working to rectify it.
It urged commuters to allow for additional 30 minutes of travelling time from Caldecott to Gardens by the Bay stations – a span of 12 stations.
SMRT also apologised to commuters for affecting their morning commute.

The golden age of airline food? Today, it's firmly on the ground

Viewed today, images of in-flight meals served in the golden age of jet travel seem opulent. Flight attendants serve hors d'oeuvres and offer short ribs or cuts from a steaming roast. They return with coffee, careful to avoid any drops on the passengers' white-linen tablecloths. After dessert, passengers repair to the lounge area for cocktails. Most passengers aren't going to eat like that on commercial airlines these days; there's a reason why the term 'jet set' has lost its luster. But it is still possible to pair your flight with a memorable meal if you know where to find it—namely, in the terminal. Yes, good food may be increasingly rare in the air, but it's becoming easier to find on the ground, with airports evolving into unexpected global gastronomic destinations. Airport cuisine is increasingly seen not just as a passenger's last chance for fine fare, but as an opportunity to experience the very best of what the host city has to offer. Big hub airports are at the forefront of this trend. The tens of millions of passengers who pass through these facilities each year give them large enough markets to offer niche and high-end food offerings. These airports, and their retail partners, are learning that this diversifies their revenue streams and creates a brand halo. But for passengers, it's really all about great dining experiences. The gold standard may be Singapore's Changi Airport, which boasts almost 250 dining options across its four terminals, including several of the hawker food courts the city-state is famous for, and a staff canteen that Anthony Bourdain considered the best food served at any airport on the planet. Or one might consider Munich's Franz Josef Strauss Airport, which has made waves for hosting the world's first Michelin-starred airport restaurant, Mountain Grub Gourmet, which earned the honor for both 2023 and 2024. The new breed of airport restaurants isn't big chain outlets. Local flavor is key. Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport offers a diverse food court with options ranging from traditional Dutch pancakes to Asian fusion cuisine, nodding to its European and colonial influences. San Francisco International showcases farm-to-table dining experiences with locally sourced ingredients from California wine country. And last year, Food & Wine magazine lauded Vancouver International's Globe@YVR for offering 'gorgeous runway views and dishes that incorporate sustainable seafood caught right in the Pacific Northwest.' Some airports team up with prominent local restaurateurs to amplify the home-grown experience. London's Heathrow Airport features The Gorgeous Kitchen, a restaurant created by star tastemakers Caroline Artiss, Sophie Mitchell, Jo Pratt, and Gee Charman to highlight seasonal British produce. Heathrow also hosts celebrity chefs Heston Blumenthal and Gordon Ramsay, who calls his restaurant, Plane Food, 'one of the best looking … anywhere in the country.' And, here at Toronto Pearson, we showcase our city's famous diversity with food by TV reality stars Roger Mooking (Man Fire Food), Lynn Crawford (Restaurant Makeover) Massimo Capra (Top Chef) and Susur Lee (Iron Chef). They and other top restaurants around the airport are offering a 'Pearsonlicious' prix-fixe experience with exclusive menus and special deals. These kinds of restaurants and programs enhance the quality of airport dining, but also give travelers a taste of what to expect beyond the terminal doors—showcases for departing passengers, time-crunched arrivals, and connecting travelers. Consider them cultural amuse-bouches. Even those opulent golden-age airplane meals, served among the clouds, never brought that to the table. By grounding diners in destination, these culinary experiences reflect not just cuisine, but identity.

The Purpose-Driven Traveler: New Report Reveals Shift in Asia Pacific Luxury Travel Trends

The Luxury Group by Marriott International launches "The Intentional Traveler" report, unveiling evolving behaviors among high-net-worth travelers across seven markets. Wellness plays key role in destination choice, with 90% of travelers considering it a top booking priority 72% of travelers plan to increase luxury travel spending New destinations including Bangladesh, New Zealand, and Cambodia gaining ground on list of top 10 destinations Nature escapes and countryside retreats surge, with interest in safaris up to 30% SINGAPORE, July 1, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- A new era of luxury travel is taking shape across Asia Pacific, defined by purpose, personalization, and profound lifestyle shifts. According to a new study from the Luxury Group by Marriott International, high-net-worth (HNW) travelers in the region are recalibrating how, where, and why they travel – prioritizing wellbeing, immersive experiences, emotional value, and intentional design over volume and extravagance. The new report surveyed 1,750 of Asia Pacific's most affluent travelers across Australia, Singapore, India, Indonesia, South Korea, Japan, and Thailand, revealing a luxury travel mindset marked by deeper cultural engagement, increased precision in itinerary planning, and rising expectations from brands and experiences. "Luxury travelers are now more intentional than ever before," says Oriol Montal, Regional Vice President, Luxury, Asia Pacific excluding China, Marriott International. "They are seeking journeys that align with their values, enhance wellbeing, and deliver deep personal meaning. For Marriott International, this represents an opportunity to evolve luxury hospitality into something more transformational, curated, and emotionally resonant." Wellness Takes Center Stage Wellbeing has become a cornerstone of luxury travel. In 2025, 90% of travelers cite wellness experiences as a key factor in their booking decisions, up from 80% the year prior. Beyond traditional spa retreats, luxury travelers are embracing holistic wellness experiences - from forest immersions and nutrition programs to sound healing and sleep therapies. Asia is the top destination for wellness journeys (67%), where 26% of travelers are planning a dedicated wellness or spa retreat. Spending More, Expecting More Luxury travelers are approaching their journeys with both confidence and discernment, as 72% plan to increase their spending on high-end travel in the coming year. This growth is led by travelers in Australia (85%), Indonesia (81%), and Singapore (80%), who are showing the strongest intent to invest more in premium experiences. Among all travel types, family travel stands out as the top priority for spending, with 47% of affluent travelers most willing to splurge when journeying with their immediate families. Brand trust is also on the rise - recognized luxury hotel brands now rank higher than independent villas or private retreats, reflecting a desire for consistency, curated experiences, and elevated service. A Return to Familiarity – Plus a New Luxury Trail A striking 93% of high-net-worth travelers in the region prefer to return to destinations they already love, with 89% saying they're more likely to revisit places where they feel a meaningful connection. These aren't just repeat trips - they're purposeful returns, often planned to delve deeper into a destination, reconnect with local communities, or relive special moments with family and friends. At the same time, while many HNW travelers continue to favor familiar destinations, new markets with convenient regional access are rapidly gaining traction: Bangladesh (26%), New Zealand (24%), and Cambodia (23%) are emerging as top choices for 2025, rising alongside established travel favorites, such as Australia, Japan, and Mainland China to secure spots in the year's top 10 most planned destinations. The Rise of the Intentional Itinerary Today's luxury travelers are booking fewer trips but with greater depth and deliberation. The average short stay has increased from 3 to 4 nights, and itineraries are meticulously planned, often months in advance. For longer trips, bookings are typically made 2-3 months ahead, while short trips are locked in 1-2 months in advance. 93% expect a personalized travel experience, while 62% plan every detail ahead of time. Nature is an Emerging Travel Priority While gastronomy remains the top driver of travel, nature-driven experiences are now an emerging pillar of luxury travel. Countryside getaways are gaining momentum, with 28% of high-net-worth travelers planning rural escapes - up from 19% last year - while 30% are booking wildlife safaris. A remarkable 92% say being close to nature is a key travel priority, reflecting a growing desire for immersive, outdoor experiences. Further, these travelers are planners at heart, with the majority booking their long trips 2 to 6 months in advance, with some booking as far as 9 to 12 months out. Changing Travel Dynamics: Who We Travel With HNW travelers are redefining traditional travel groups as new dynamics emerge. Guardian TrailsettersOnce a niche category, solo parents traveling with their kid(s) has grown from 15% to 24% in just a year. When traveling as a solo parent, they show a preference for enriching itineraries that offer invaluable experiences for their children, including religious events (41%), educational trips (38%), and safaris or extreme adventures (both at 35%). Impact ExplorersGen Z travelers are gravitating toward destinations like Australia, Sri Lanka, and Thailand - choices that reflect their strong appetite for nature, culture, and adventure. Far from the leisure-seeker stereotype, this generation is driven by purposeful, active experiences: 47% prioritize being close to nature, 45% are eager to encounter wildlife, and 43% are drawn to active sporting holidays. Solo travel appeals to 31% as a means of independence and self-discovery, though small group trips of fewer than five people remain their preferred way to explore. Venture TravelistFirst introduced in the 2024 New Luxe Landscapes report, the Venture Travelist segment has seen significant growth in 2025. 86% of HNW travelers now say they explore business or investment opportunities while traveling - up from 69% the previous year. The full report is available to download. High-resolution images are available here. Note to Editor Findings are from a research report commissioned by Luxury Group by Marriott International conducted over a period from March 14 to April 17, 2025, with frequent international travelers who primarily travel for leisure. Trip.com Group Pioneers a Greener, More Inclusive Global Travel Ecosystem in 2024 Sustainability Report

Group launches new full-scale carbon emissions data feature across transport modes Country Retreats Programme expands to more global destinations, driving rural development Championing greater inclusion in the workplace SINGAPORE, July 1, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Group, a leading global travel service provider, has released its latest Sustainability Report. The report highlights the company's significant progress in sustainability, centred around its "Friendly Four" framework - Stakeholder-Friendly, Community-Friendly, Family-Friendly, and Environmentally-Friendly. It captures key highlights of the Group's efforts to advance a more sustainable and inclusive future through innovation, collaboration, and responsible growth. Comprehensive carbon emissions data launched across transport and accommodation modes As part of its commitment to making sustainable travel accessible, Group has launched a new feature that offers quantified carbon emissions data across all major transportation services - including flights, car rentals, airport transfers, and trains (European trains). With the support of the Association of Car Rental Industry System Standards (ACRISS), users can now view tailpipe CO₂ emission data for car rental listings and compare the emissions of electric, hybrid, and traditional vehicles. A similar informative function for airport transfers further empowers travellers to be informed with greener mobility choices across every leg of their journey. The Group's wider environmental efforts continue to scale. In 2024 alone, the Group has encouraged travellers to place over 100 million orders on more sustainable travel products. Solar panel installations at the Group's headquarters and rural retreats generated 457 MWh of clean electricity, offsetting more than 245 tons of CO₂ emissions. Additionally, Group increased its use of green electricity in leased data centres to 42.6%, underscoring its commitment to long-term decarbonisation and its 2050 carbon neutrality goal. Additionally, for the first time, the Group's report includes all categories from Scope 3 carbon emissions - covering sources such as leased data centres and business travel, to support more comprehensive tracking and target-setting in line with group's carbon neutrality target by 2050. Country Retreat Programme expands to more global destinations Group continued to make meaningful contributions to rural development and public safety through tourism. Its flagship Country Retreat Programme expanded to 34 sites, generating more than 40,000 indirect job opportunities. Over 80% of employees at these retreats are local residents, and participating villages reported an average rise in per capita income of USD 5,500. This year, the programme will expand to more global destinations. Additional childcare leave days, subsidies, and gender equity anchor Group's family-first culture Group has also strengthened its position as a leading family-friendly workplace. Women now account for 57.1% of its global workforce, with representation at senior and middle management levels reaching 32.7% and 43% respectively, and over 61.2% at entry-levels. The Group's hybrid work programme, launched in 2022, has been used over 630,000 times by employees, saving an estimated 1.25 million commuting hours and enhancing work-life flexibility. As part of its efforts to support families, the Group also provided an additional three days of childcare leave starting April this year to help working parents better balance personal and professional responsibilities. In addition, the group has enhanced its benefits for female employees seeking assisted reproductive medical services. Apart from egg freezing, eligible staff can receive a higher amount of subsidy of up to $20,900 USD for in vitro fertilisation. Meanwhile, the childcare subsidy programme, introduced in 2023, has provided cash bonuses for more than 900 children, with over USD 468,000 distributed in 2024 alone. Strong rating reinforces Group's governance focus Group continued to raise the bar in corporate governance, earning an A rating from MSCI ESG. Globally, the Group hosted two partner summits and deepened collaboration with more than 230 destination marketing organisations to drive inclusive tourism development. Ms Jane Sun, CEO of Group, said, "The ability to operate and grow more sustainably will be among the most critical factors for future competitiveness. We believe that sustainable development is a long-term journey requiring deep and enduring commitment. Together with our users, partners, and employees, we are working to build a future where every journey brings us closer - to one another, and to the perfect trip for a better world."
