Johor, Singapore propose cross-border e-hailing service for commuters
Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi said the proposal was among the matters discussed during his meeting with Singapore's Acting Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow on Friday.
'This service not only offers more flexible, on-demand mobility options for users but also has the potential to ease congestion on major routes and create income opportunities for local drivers,' he said in a statement yesterday.
'It could also serve as a catalyst for a more user-friendly, safe and competitive transport system, while strengthening integration between both countries' public transport networks.'
Onn Hafiz said discussions also touched on the progress of the Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link project, which is scheduled to begin operations in January 2027.
'This includes the physical development of the project, coordination of operating schedules, determination of fare structures, and integration of public transport systems between Johor and Singapore.
'There were also proposals to align operating hours and increase the number of cross-border buses, with services starting earlier than the current 5am schedule, to ease congestion and ensure smoother traffic flow at the Johor Causeway and immigration complexes,' he said.

KOTA KINABALU, Aug 3 — Pakatan Harapan (PH) will not take sides in the political 'love triangle' involving Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) and Barisan Nasional (BN), said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The PH chairman and Parti Keadilan Rakyat president has said that the national coalition will instead play a balancing role between the rival blocs to maintain political stability while avoiding three-cornered contests and preventing further division among allies. 'Love can sometimes hurt,' he said with a smile. 'But that is the meaning of love.' He was asked how PH planned on juggling the 'love triangle' of PH-BN and PH-GRS as two separate but conflicting pacts in the upcoming state elections. Anwar said that discussions are ongoing between the respective committees and it was his hope that they could avoid overlapping candidacies between the three coalitions. 'For now we are trying to secure an arrangement where there is no three-corner fight,' he said. 'But in the case it has to happen, our advice is that probably we will try and refrain from entering this battle to avoid creating division,' he said. When asked whether the situation might confuse voters, Anwar admitted there would be challenges. 'To some areas where there is this conflict, I'm sure it is. This message we have sent to the three parties — PH, BN, and GRS — that our intention is to make sure, if necessary, to secure that sort of understanding, because that is a priority,' he said. 'What is important is for PH to have a constructive goal — to make sure that its presence is to qualify the reformative agenda, and to understand that we need full collaboration of all parties to ensure the stability of a strong state government, which is to me essential to cooperate with the federal government, for the benefit of Sabah and Malaysia,' he said. The prime minister had previously expressed his hopes for a three way pact but Sabah Umno and GRS had refused an alliance after falling out in early 2023.

'This is a border issue between two countries, and Indonesia is an ally. President Prabowo is my personal friend, a family friend. I want it to be a good relationship. 'We talked about Sulawesi, and I wanted Hajiji to hear for himself, and give his view. We will discuss perimeters, following maritime laws, following history. It must be approved by the state government and subsequently the state legislative assembly. 'We will negotiate it properly, without surrendering. This was all in the meeting, not just under-the-table talk,' he said here today. Anwar said the matter was recently raised in Parliament, where it was suggested the dispute had already been settled — a claim he denied. 'We will protect every inch of Sabah. I will defend this principle. I chose to answer this now because we are defending Sabah on behalf of the federal government,' he said. Located in the Sulawesi Sea off Sabah's east coast near Tawau, the Ambalat Block has long been claimed by both Malaysia and Indonesia, primarily due to its oil and gas potential. Tensions flared in the early 2000s when both countries issued overlapping exploration concessions — Indonesia to ENI and Unocal, and Malaysia, via Petronas, to Shell.
