Brian Wilson's complex relationship with his daughters resurfaces after death
The Beach Boys icon's passing aged 82 following a long dementia battle was announced on Wednesday (11.06.25) at the age of 82, and he had daughters Carnie Wilson, 57, and Wendy Wilson, 55, with his first wife Marilyn Wilson, a singer with 1960s girl group The Honeys.
Carnie and Wendy's parents divorced in 1979 after a turbulent marriage marked by Brian's struggles with substance abuse and mental health, including a diagnosis of schizoaffective disorder.
The breakdown of the relationship led to years of estrangement between the musician and his daughters, with limited contact during their formative years.
Brian remarried in 1995, wedding Melinda Ledbetter.
Together they adopted five children – Dakota Rose, Daria Rose, Delanie Rose, Dylan and Dash.
While his younger children remained out of the public spotlight, Carnie and Wendy went on to form the pop trio Wilson Phillips in 1989 alongside Chynna Phillips, daughter of John and Michelle Phillips of The Mamas and the Papas.
The group achieved rapid commercial success in the early 1990s with hits including Hold On, Release Me and You're in Love.
Despite their fame, Carnie and Wendy's personal relationship with their father remained strained.
In a 1992 interview with the Los Angeles Times quoted by the Daily Mail, Carnie said: 'We can't call him up and we can't see him. I guess we could, but we're so afraid of each other. I don't know what I would say to him.'
That same year, the sisters addressed their estrangement through a track titled Flesh and Blood, featured on Wilson Phillips' second album Shadows and Light.
The song was written as an emotional outreach to their father.
Their lyrics included the lines: 'If you never plan to come out of your shell / You're never gonna get well… For years I've been following your case / It's the only time I see your face.'
Carnie also told the Los Angeles Times she was unsure how Brian would respond to the tune: 'He's either going to cry real hard, or else just stare at something and get (mad.)'
A reconciliation between Brian and his daughters began in 1994, when the family reunited after years of minimal contact.
Speaking to People at the time, Carnie said: 'Wendy and I are doing demo tapes for our debut album as a duo, and I hope Daddy will provide background harmonies. I know that one day we'll all work together.'
The connection strengthened in later years, particularly through music.
Carnie also told UsWeekly in 2024 Brian had become one of Wilson Phillips' biggest supporters.
She said: 'He also loves Wilson Phillips. He really does.
'He's always asking me, 'How's Wilson Phillips?' I go, 'We're great, Dad.' He's funny. He's very proud.'
Even after being diagnosed with a neurocognitive disorder similar to dementia, Brian continued to share musical moments with his daughters.
Carnie told UsWeekly: 'We love to sing Surfer Girl and In My Room.
'Sometimes a little California Girls, (which is) his favourite, and sometimes we do Be My Baby.'
Though the Wilson sisters largely avoided trading on their famous surname early in their career, their eventual musical collaborations with their father marked a shift.
Carnie said of their family connections in the Los Angeles Times: 'We didn't want people to think that they were (the reasons for) our success. Because they weren't.'

Majors, 35, also comes into the marriage as a father, sharing a 12-year-old daughter from a past relationship, a fact that Meagan highlights as a positive attribute in him. Good, 43, told Us Weekly at Lifetime's Summer Soirée that having children is now a firm desire. 'I definitely am ready to have kids now,' she shared, emphasizing her partner's role. She wants to do it with someone she can 'really do it with, and get excited about doing it with, and who is a phenomenal father already, but now we can do it together.' The couple has even discussed ideal family size, with Good confirming, 'Two would be good.' And they've already got a bustling house, as she humorously noted, 'We got four dogs already. So, we got four Belgian Malinois, and they are the hyperest dogs of life, but the house is very safe.' Interestingly, Meagan credits her role as Camille Parks on the hit series 'Harlem' with helping her navigate her own feelings towards becoming a parent. 'I know that there's a lot of similarities to Camille's journey and to Meagan's journey because I always knew that I wanted to be a mother,' Good explained of her character. She went on to explore the societal pressures she felt, asking herself, ''Is that because I felt like I should want that?' And then there were times where I wasn't sure, and I was like, 'Am I pushing back against it because I don't like people telling me what I'm supposed to want?'' Playing Camille allowed her to openly explore the 'taboo' of not wanting children, 'Being able to say out loud that Camille doesn't want kids — because it's such a taboo thing to say — and everyone always goes, 'Well, what's wrong with you?'' Good elaborated. She added, 'It's, like, 'No, some people just don't want to,' and to be able to explore that with her, and then ultimately for her to be the one to get pregnant and be able to explore that journey. … Some people, maybe they just don't want to. For other people, maybe there is something you're afraid of, maybe there is something you've experienced, maybe there is something that's holding you back, and all of those things, nothing can be wrong. All these things are just a part of our journey.' Ultimately, this means Meagan Good is ready for kids in real life, 'It definitely made me excited to go, 'OK, now that I've explored and unpacked so much through my character in more ways than one, now I get to go, 'Yeah, I think this actually makes me super ready,'' she shared. Married life with Majors has been 'pretty amazing' for Good, who expressed her immense happiness as a newlywed. 'I'm just really happy,' Good told Us . 'He's very silly. He always falls asleep in the middle of movies. I love doing adventures with him. If I'm like, 'Let's just go try this. Let's go do that.' He's like, 'All right, let's go.' We're just both in it, like, two little kids who can't believe we're allowed to do what we want to do.' Speaking of Jonathan's silly side, it's hard to tell whether he was trolling us or his new bride with his latest joke about her possible baby bump. In a recent Instagram Live from their gym session, he was filming Meagan and surprisingly put her on baby bump blast. 'Her belly does look thick! Who knows if she's pregnant? I can't call it!' he said. Even with all the acting experience under her belt, Meagan couldn't hide her surprise at the awkward moment. She didn't confirm or deny a mini Majors on the way, but the joke has pregnancy rumors swirling all over the internet. 'Pete has always wanted to be a dad': Pete Davidson's baby wish
Pete Davidson has 'always wanted to be a dad'. The 31-year-old comedian and his 29-year-old model girlfriend Elsie Hewitt are expecting their first child together later this year and friends of Pete have insisted that now is the 'perfect' time for him to become a father. A source told Us Weekly: 'This has brought them even closer. It's a healthy relationship for Pete. Pete has always wanted to be a dad and thinks the timing in his life is perfect. He couldn't have done it a few years ago but is in a very different place in life now. 'He's had a great year so far with two movies coming out soon, another in production, and a return to stand-up.' While Pete and Elsie only went public with their romance in March, insiders insisted they are smitten with each other. The source said: 'They are over the moon about it. They are so excited. Pete and Elsie have a really playful relationship, and things are going really well.'
