Williamson spoilt for choice
The Branxholme trainer-driver opted for the tried and true in Captains Mistress, who will clash with her exciting and unbeaten stablemate Utah Jazz in Southland's premier race for 3yr-old fillies at Ascot Park tomorrow.
Now that it has been made, Williamson will not lose any sleep if it turns out to be the wrong one.
"Obviously training both of them and both being raced by Mick Boots, I am going to be pretty stoked if one of them can beat the other and get the job done.
"I have gone with the proven filly at this stage in Captains Mistress.
"There is no doubting her class and I am really happy with where she is at.
"It is not to say Utah Jazz can't come out and beat her, because she is very progressive.
"But until she gets out there on Sunday, she's yet to prove herself in group company."
Captains Mistress (10) looks to have a slight draw advantage over Utah Jazz (7), who must start wide on the front row for driver Craig Ferguson.
"She's a good filly, but from the draw it could be a little bit tricky for her.
"It will be up to Craig, but I can see him having to slot back somewhere, because there looks to be a lot of speed inside her."
What Utah Jazz has clearly over her star stablemate is recent racing.
Captains Mistress has had just one recent start, whereas Utah Jazz has had three.
However, a lack of fitness is not something Williamson is expecting to be an issue for his favourite.
"She is very well in herself. She will improve with more racing but she is pretty well where she needs to be."
"If she doesn't have any bad luck and gets a reasonable enough run, I'd expect her to be hard to beat."
Williamson also starts a key contender in the group 2 Alabar Southern Supremacy Stakes Final in Always Dreaming.
The 3yr-old is similar to Captains Mistress in that he has had only one run leading into a major event.
Similarly, he does not think a lack of fitness will be an issue for his charge.
"He has sharpened up off his run last week."
"He has been one of those horses that if you throw in the deep end, he will swim.
"He came home, licked the bowl and his work has really sharpened up.
"The draw (10) is the only real issue for him, but I still expect him to be very competitive."
Williamson also starts Duchess Maria in the group 3 Entain Southern Classic.
The debutante looks a genuine winning threat following her strong recent trials.
Miraculous and Secret Agent Man are also among the trainer's powerful Diamonds Day lineup.

Phil Williamson is looking to turn back the clock to 2021 on the first day of the Southern Surge. Four years ago, Williamson's form in the sulky at Central Southland Raceway was red-hot. But the undisputed king of New Zealand trotting has not driven a winner since. Not that he has tried too hard. The master trotting trainer can get back on the board tomorrow when he teams up with two runners from his powerful team of six starting on day one of the Southern Surge series. One of them is Tarragindi who rates as one of the hardest horses to beat on the 11-race Winton card. The 3-year-old is a proven group 1 performer who has beaten arguably stronger fields at Addington recently than he faces tomorrow. All Williamson has to do is wind back the clock to his Jasmyn's Gift days. "Everything is good with him and he should be tough to beat. "It will depend how it is run a bit, with the 10m. "Whether we press forward or sit back will depend on what is happening up front. "You have to respect the opposition, but I would like to think he would be hard to beat." What's The Whisper is Williamson's first drive and he looks a bright hope on the back of his nice late work in his most recent trial. The trainer-driver just hopes the 3-year-old has his brain engaged for his first race start. "He is a work in progress — he is a big dummy. "He is on the unruly because he isn't very clever at stepping that first 10m, but from there he should hopefully be able to get away. "He has definitely got the ability to win a maiden at short notice, but there are a few unknowns with him." Williamson also starts Rangitata in race 1, the filly also impressing in her recent trials. "Rangitata is a more reliable type. She hasn't missed a beat all the way through. "She is a really, really big horse for a 3-year-old filly — you would think that time will be her friend. "At this stage she is a little bit raw, but on what she is showing us hopefully she can be one of the ones to beat." Williamson has a three-pronged attack in the fast-class trotting heat in the Southern Surge. Missile (20m), Our Pinocchio (10m) and Torquay Street (front) go head to head, the last shaping as the Williamson stable's best hope. "Torquay Street has the game for this race. I think if she caught it right she could lead." "If she settled in the first two or three she could be hard to beat." "She is fresh up. She might be found wanting depending on how it is run, but she is stronger now." Our Pinocchio and Missile both look each-way threats from their handicaps.

Double victory at Winton for trainer-driver Williamson
Brad Williamson's winning double on Winter Rewards Day at Winton yesterday brought delight to owners across New Zealand. The Oamaru trainer-driver produced Aint No Angel to win her second Winter Rewards Final, as well as scoring with Tabasco. After producing strong form in handy company recently, Aint No Angel saved her best for Southland's biggest day of harness racing so far. The mare's victory sits alongside the Winter Rewards Final she produced at Addington last year for Oturehua breeder-owners Neville Armstrong, Rusty Nevill, and Kim and Mary Heaney. The win also added to the ever-growing list of winners for Nevill, one of Otago's biggest standardbred breeders. "It's a great result for Rusty. "Behind the scenes he does a hell of a lot for the industry," Williamson said. "He probably goes under the radar a bit; he is not one to put himself in the spotlight." "But he breeds and races a lot of horses and contributes a lot to the industry." "Rusty is in this mare with a group of his mates from Central Otago and they love watching her race." Tabasco bounced quickly back to his best form while showing he has got another weapon in his arsenal. The pacer almost exclusively races up on the pace, but yesterday Williamson was forced to sit off a strong early speed from his wide draw. Despite possibly being out of his comfort zone, it mattered little when Tabasco powered home to score. "His best results have come when I have driven him upside down," Williamson said. "But today he was just sitting back doing nothing in what was a bit of a drop back in class for him." Tabasco is raced by a group of loyal Williamson stable owners, including Robert Austin, of Waiuku. "Robert makes the trip down from up north for most of Tabasco's races," Williamson said. "He bred this horse's dam, so it's his breed, really." "He's a great owner and loves his racing and his horses, so it is great that can get a bit more success today." Downtown Orlando, Robyns Hustler, Share A Dream, Emily, and Southside Of Heaven were also Winter Rewards Final winners alongside Aint No Angel.

Talent galore slated for Southern Surge
The Southern Surge is set to unleash all sorts of equine talent in Southland. The new series was designed to heat up what has traditionally been a quieter harness racing scene in the South with $440,000 in stakes. Early indications suggest it will do just that. Nathan Williamson's barn has been quiet through the winter months, but the lure of lucrative stakes is set to change that. Williamson has a powerful squad of at least seven he will aim at the Southern Surge, which starts on Sunday at Winton. After impressing in her debut victory at Addington last month, She's Crunchy has been freshened with a view to attacking the series. Williamson will also aim Always Dreaming, Rise Up N Dance, Passchendaele and Always Dreaming in the Southern Surge pacing heats. Black Pat, Clotilde Wainwright and Aroha Kenny make up Williamson's trotting team. Kirstin Green lined up a big team of horses through winter, producing excellent results, including a treble at the recent Winter Rewards Day at Winton. The trainer plans to line many of her recent starters up in the Southern Surge Series, including Bobbies Rock. Similarly, Brett Gray will line up many of the good number of horses he has started in recent weeks in the Southern Surge. But the trainer also has fresh stock to arrive on the scene, including Tycoon Banner and Party Up Denario. Two serious 3-year-old trotters are also among the talent set to step out in the Southern Surge series. To The Moon And Back stamped his class in three huge efforts in maiden grade before jogging to a Gold Chip Final win in his last start at Ascot Park earlier this month. Brad Williamson is targeting the Southern Series after giving the trotter a brief freshener. Phil Williamson will be adding depth to the Southern Surge heats with his rising star Tarragindi. The trotter showed he was up with New Zealand's best 2-year-old trotter Meant To Be late last year, before being put aside. Tarragindi has looked to return a more refined product, in his first and second in two winter starts at Addington. Williamson has a powerful lineup set to make their mark on the Southern Surge, including Missile, Harriet's Moment, Our Pinnochio, Have A Little Faith, Torquay Street, What's The Whisper and Rangitata. Quality pacing mare Nutcracker heads Craig Ferguson's prospective Southern Surge team. The trainer plans to aim Bubble Me and possibly Saucy Delight at the series. Matthew Williamson expects to start a sizeable team in the Southern Surge heats, with Majic N The Port looking capable of a maiden win at short notice following his unlucky last-start outing at Winton. Racing this Sunday is expected to start at noon and entry is free. The day will feature several heats of the Southern Surge Series sponsored by Diamond Creek Farm/SBSR, with another round the following Sunday at Ascot Park Raceway in Invercargill and the finals at Gore on August 24. — Allied Media
