Michigan teenager drowns in Lake Michigan's Sturgeon Bay
A teenager died as a result of a drowning Sunday at Sturgeon Bay Beach in Northern Lower Michigan. The victim was a 14-year-old from Alanson, which is about 30 miles away, the Emmet County Sheriff's Office said in its report. "Our hearts are broken for the family. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this incredibly difficult time," Sheriff Matt Leirstein said in his statement. First responders got a distress call about 5:41 p.m. Sunday of two teenage boys who were struggling to stay afloat in the water. A bystander had stepped in and managed to rescue one of them. "Unfortunately, the second teen, a 14-year-old male, went underwater and did not resurface," the report said. The Emmet County Dive Team responded to the scene and recovered the body of the teenager in the area he was last seen swimming. Sturgeon Bay is along the shore of Lake Michigan. The dive team reported there was a strong northeast current that was pulling the rescuers as they began search efforts. "Northern Lake Michigan and its currents are very dangerous. We urge everyone to exercise extreme caution when entering the water," the sheriff said. The Emmet County Sheriff's Office was assisted on scene the U.S. Coast Guard, Emmet County EMS, Emmet County Search and Rescue, Pellston Fire Department, Carp Lake Fire Department, Readmond-Friendship Fire Department and the Emmet County Medical Examiners Office.

Simon Harris holds talks with Haitian counterpart over Gena Heraty kidnapping
Ireland's deputy premier Simon Harris has held talks with his Haitian counterpart about the kidnapping of Irish woman Gena Heraty. Mr Harris, Ireland's Minister for Foreign Affairs, spoke to Haiti's foreign minister, Harvel Jean-Baptiste by phone and asked that everything is done to ensure the release of Ms Heraty and the other hostages, including a three-year-old child. Ms Heraty was kidnapped along with seven other people from an orphanage in Haiti. Ms Heraty is originally from Westport in Co Mayo. She oversees the orphanage, which is run by the humanitarian organisation Nos Petits Freres Et Soeurs (Our Little Brothers And Sisters). It is understood Ms Heraty was among seven employees who were taken in the incident as well as the young child. Speaking after the call, Mr Harris said: 'I welcome my engagement with Minister Harvel Jean Baptiste after what has been an extremely traumatic few days for the Heraty family, as well as the families of all those who were kidnapped. 'The minister assured me of his support in our work to ensure the safe release of Gena, and all the hostages, who have gone through the most horrendous of ordeals. 'We have agreed to stay in touch about the case, which remains extremely sensitive. 'My officials in the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade are in constant contact with the Heraty family. 'When we have further updates, we will provide them.' Mr Harris said he had been in contact with Ms Heraty's family on Monday. Ms Heraty is a member of Viatores Christi, a lay missionary organisation. In a statement, the group said Ms Heraty was taken by armed individuals from her home at the NPFS (Nos Petits Freres et Soeurs) compound in Kenscoff on Sunday morning. 'Gena has worked in Haiti for over 30 years, dedicating her life to children and adults with disabilities through her leadership of NPFS's Special Needs Programme,' it said. 'Her commitment, compassion and steady presence have made a lasting difference to many families in the region. 'Our organisation has supported NPFS's work for a number of years and has seen first-hand the impact of Gena's efforts. We are in close contact with our partners on the ground and remain hopeful for her safe return. 'We are thinking of Gena, her family and colleagues, and the adults and children in her care. We ask that her privacy — and that of those closest to her — be respected as efforts continue to clarify the situation.' The Department of Foreign Affairs said it is aware of the incident and is providing consular assistance.

Boy, 11, drowns after becoming stuck in muddy excavation pit
An 11-year-old Free State boy drowned at a construction site in Odendaalsrus while swimming with two friends on Saturday afternoon. 'Odendaalsrus police were summoned to a scene of a drowning at Kutlwanong. On arrival at the scene, members were informed that three boys aged between 10 and 11 were allegedly swimming inside an excavation filled with wastewater,' police spokesperson Sergeant Palesa Thabana said. They became stuck in mud inside the pit. 'Two of the boys, aged 10, managed to get out, while the 11-year-old victim got stuck in the mud and ultimately drowned,' Thabana said. 'The Welkom SAPS diving unit, under the command of Sergeant Arno Cronje, was called to the scene. Together with Matjhabeng fire department members, they retrieved the deceased body from the sewage dump on Saturday evening at about 20:20.' In an unrelated incident in November last year, Vista reported that a 14-year-old boy drowned in a quarry of water filled with sewage in Meloding, Virginia. The boy's friends told the police that a group of them had been swimming in the quarry when one of them drowned. Matjhabeng municipality employees were deployed to drain the sewage. The boy's body was found stuck in mud inside the quarry.
