King Charles gives new health update as cancer treatment continues
King Charles has opened up about his cancer diagnosis describing it as "just one of those things". It came as he and Queen Camilla dropped by the Jockey Club Rooms today in Newmarket, the heart of the horse racing industry, after touring the nearby National Stud.
The couple went on a meet and greet with the public after more than a 1,000 people flocked to the Suffolk town's centre and the King, who is receiving ongoing cancer treatment, spoke about his health. Lee Harman, 54, from Bury St Edmunds, said: "I asked him how he was, and he said he was feeling a lot better now and that it was 'just one of those things'."
After telling Charles about his own cancer issues, Mr Harman said: "He asked me how I was and I said 'I'm all good', I got the all clear from cancer last year."
Meanwhile, Charles also admitted he is working on producing a runner for one of the greatest spectacles in the racing calendar - the Derby. Thoroughbreds owned by his mother the late Queen won four out of the five flat racing classics - the 1,000 Guineas and 2,000 Guineas, the Oaks twice and the St Leger - with only the Derby eluding her.
Now it appears the King, who took on Elizabeth II's stable of horses with his wife, is aiming to have a thoroughbred ready. As he toured the Jockey Club Rooms, a retreat for members and the public, he chatted to his racing manager John Warren, Jockey Club staff and members, and some of the chairs of racecourses run by the club, the official governing body for horseracing in Britain.
Brian Finch, chairman of Epsom Downs Racecourse, home to the world-famous Derby, said after speaking to the King: "We were talking about him getting a Derby runner and he said 'we're working on it'. Everybody is hoping the royal family will have a Derby winner soon."
Earlier at the National Stud, the royal couple were welcomed by the stud's chairman Lord Grimthorpe and Anna Kerr, the chief executive.
One of the officials in the line-up praised the King's French, telling him: 'Compliments on your French during the State Visit - fabulous" to which the King jokingly replied: 'I don't know about that. I did a lot of brushing up.'
Next, they met representatives from racing charities and trusts including Jane Buick, an ambassador for Autism in Racing who is working with the National Stud team to develop tours for neuro divergent groups and Oshane Marsh, a graduate from the Riding a Dream academy, who learned to ride at the Ebony Horse Club in Brixton which Camilla supports.
Camilla, wearing a patterned silk dress and a straw fan-shaped clutch bag, told him: 'It's lovely to see a graduate from Ebony. Also gathered to meet them were members of the National Stud's and British Racing School's Education teams.
The National Stud's education team runs a programme of full and part-time courses and is the only provider of vocational thoroughbred breeding education in the UK. Around 50 students complete the programmes each year, with an 89 per cent retention rate of graduates working in racing after graduation.
Camilla, who became patron of the British Racing School which is based near Newmarket earlier this year, together with Charles also met Katie Longbottom and Katie Fleming, the author and illustrator of the National Stud storybooks, which are currently in development and aim to encourage young children's interest in horses from an early age.
The books feature an array of equine characters, including foals, stallions and holidaying racehorses, and their adventures beyond the paddocks. Looking at some of the art work from the books on easels, the King asked Fleming how she produced her work, and heard how she works up paintings from sketches first made on a tablet.
The King and Queen then watched a parade of the stud's four resident stallions - Lope Y Fernandez, Bradsell, Rajasinghe and Stradivarius – the latter of which won 18 Group 1 races, often jockeyed by Frankie Dettori.
After his parade, Stradivarius was walked over to Charles and Camilla, who patted him and gave him mints. His handler told them 'he loves the cameras', and Charles asked after his daily routine and whether he was 'turned out a lot of the time'. Told he was out for most of the day and then in his stable for 'his dinner in the evenings,' Camilla joked: 'That's the good life'.
After their visit to the National Stud, Charles and Camilla travelled to the King Edward VII Memorial Hall on Newmarket High Street for a reception where crowds had gathered as they met members of local community groups, businesses and Mark Ashton, the chairman of Ipswich Town Football Club.
Their final engagement of the morning saw the King and Queen visit the Jockey Club Rooms to meet staff and members of the Club, of which they are joint patrons. Accompanied by Baroness Dido Harding, chair and senior steward of the Jockey Club, British racing's largest commercial organisation and employer which runs 15 national racecourses including Aintree, Cheltenham and Epsom, and Jim Mullen, the chief executive, they viewed artefacts from Newmarket's National Horseracing Museum, of which Camilla is also patron.
Charles and Camilla also learned about the launch of The Jockey Club Patrons Scholarship, which is to be delivered in partnership by The National Stud and the British Racing School.
The new initiative will provide access to careers in racing to those from diverse ethnic communities, working with organisations such as The Ebony Horse Club in Brixton, London.

Tour de France prankster knocked off bike by police in chaotic scenes
This year's Tour de France has been disrupted by a series of incidents and Wednesday saw another, as a man dressed like a rider got over the boardings and onto the track with his own bike French police and security guards were forced to tackle a prankster who was dressed up as a cyclist and invaded the Tour de France track just moments before the conclusion of a crucial stage. The unidentified man was dressed in full cycling gear, imitating a rider. But security immediately spotted the man after he leapt over the boardings with his bike and tried to ride across the finish line of Stage 17. He was wearing a Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale jersey. The man was quickly removed from the track, ensuring that the leaders were able to pass. Stage 17 was eventually won by Italy's Jonathan Milan. This year's Tour de France has been littered with incidents. Last Wednesday, at Stage 11, security personnel had to stop a pro-Palestine protestor who'd made their way onto the track. The man sprinted down the track with his hands in the air a mere 25 metres from the stage's finish line. Riders were going past as it happened. The protestor was wearing a t-shirt which read: " Israel out of the Tour." He was also holding a keffiyeh, a black-and-white checkered headdress which is considered a pro-Palestine symbol. During the 14th stage of the iconic event, an INEOS team car hit a spectator who'd stepped onto the road. Earlier this month, a knife-wielding attacker was shot in the leg by police after trying to disrupt the race between Amiens and Rouen. The attacker allegedly threatened people and stabbed a police officer close to the finish line of stage 4. Huge crowds had gathered to see world champion Tadej Pogacar clash with the likes of Mathieu van der Poel and Jonas Vingegaard. But it was Milan, 24, who took the glory at stage 17 on Wednesday. "This is a really fantastic team victory and I have to thank them from the bottom of my heart," he beamed after his stage second win of his maiden Tour de France. "I survived with the help of my team-mates. Without this, I would not be here. They delivered me in the best position [for the finish]." It was a rain-soaked sprint finish in Valence, with a huge crash one kilometre from the end making the headlines. Milan, a debutant with Lidl-Trek, leads 'rockstar' Pogacar by 72 points in the points classification and is braced for a battle with the dominant Slovenian. "We achieved 61 points today, so I'm really happy about that," Milan added. "It was one of our goals in the beginning of the day. I think it's never easy to have a real specific [goal] and then to achieve it, so I'm also really happy for that. "In the next days, we will try to do our best, to take as many points as we can in the intermediate sprints and then, yeah, we will see.. With Tadej he's a cycling rock star, so we will also see with the points that he will achieve. From my side, I will just try to give my best to bring the green jersey as far as we can."

Hugo Ekitike joins Liverpool in £79m deal as Reds continue spending spree
Liverpool have completed the £79m deal to sign Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt. The France under-21 striker has signed a six-year deal to keep him at Anfield until 2031. Liverpool beat Newcastle to landing the 23-year-old front man but were confident they were always leading the race and did not make a late move. They have been considering a swoop for him since January, held talks with his camp around then and boss Arne Slot spoke to the player at the end of the season. Ekitike scored 22 goals last season in all competitions but there's belief within Liverpool that he can surpass those numbers significantly to become a deadly striker and one of the best in the world because of his other statistics. The deal is £69m up front with a further £10m in add ons. The data they have used to decide on the significant investment gives them confidence more goals will come. Newcastle striker Alexander Isak was considered more of a guaranteed success but the Magpies insist he's not for sale. Data shows only Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe had better potential than Ekitike at 23 in recent years. Manchester United did make a late move to sign the French forward with Christopher Vivell contacting Eintracht Frankfurt sporting director Markus Krosche but the player was only interested in Liverpool. Liverpool didn't enter the negotiation until Newcastle had nearly agreed a deal as they didn't want a bidding war. The Reds see Ekitike as a No 9 who can also play deeper and wide to make him a versatile option. Ekitike completed his move in London and will now fly to Asia to link up with his new team-mates in Hong Kong. The deal takes Liverpool's spending to just shy of £300m. Birmingham City lead loan race for Premier League defender in latest transfer coup
EXCLUSIVE: Birmingham have already wrapped up some eye-catching signings ahead of their return to the Championship this coming season and are now close to another transfer coup Birmingham City are leading a host of Championship clubs in the race to snap up Eiran Cashin on loan as the Blues close in on yet another transfer coup. Cashin, 23, joined Brighton back in the January transfer window after coming through the ranks at Derby County and has had no shortage of suitors among second-tier clubs after being given the green light to continue his development out on loan. Mirror Football understands that Birmingham have now emerged as the favourites to sign the sought-after defender for the 2025-26 campaign. Cashin would be the latest eye-catching signing for the Blues, who are chasing a second successive promotion after winning the League One title last year. The Republic of Ireland youth international is held in high regard by Brighton, who paid a significant sum to bring him to the south coast earlier this year after a lengthy pursuit spanning almost two years. He made two substitute appearances in the Premier League for the Seagulls after leaving Derby mid-season but is now poised to return to the Championship to play a part in Birmingham's bid to clinch successive promotions. The Blues have already significantly strengthened the squad which romped to the League One title last year with a record points tally. The likes of Kyogo Furuhashi, Tommy Doyle and Demarai Gray have all signed on for Birmingham's return to the Championship with more additions expected before the summer transfer window shuts on 1 September. Cashin made 144 appearances in total for Derby before moving to the Premier League, scoring six goals. The Rams academy graduate was also named in the 2023-24 League One team of the season following his performances in Derby's promotion winning season.
