How to reproduce with two fathers – and no biological mother

At the Third International Summit on Human Genome Editing, held in March 2023 at the Francis Crick Institute in London, Japanese researcher Katsuhiko Hayashi stunned attendees when he explained how he had successfully reproduced mice from two male parents.
In effect, Hayashi had developed a complex procedure for turning male pluripotent (meaning embryonic or inducible) stem cells into female stem cells, allowing him to obtain eggs from a male. His surprising findings were published in the journal Nature a few weeks later.
Almost two years later, a team of Chinese researchers – led by Zhi-kun Li, Wei Li and Qi Zhou of the Chinese Academy of Sciences – has once again shocked the field of genetics with a similar procedure.
However, these scientists found a completely different way of achieving the same result. They produced a baby mouse from two males without maternal biological intervention, beyond needing a female mouse to gestate the embryos generated. Their results were published last month in the journal Cell Stem Cell.
This new procedure developed by Li and colleagues combats a mammalian control system called genetic imprinting, which prevents viable mammal embryos from being obtained by combining two gametes of the same sex (two sperm or two eggs). These embryos do not survive naturally, since in mammals every embryo has to derive from a male gamete (sperm) and a female gamete (egg).
The reason for this is that some genes are only expressed if they are inherited from the mother, while others have to be inherited from the father. And all of them are essential for survival.
The Chinese researchers' highly complex process manages to convert, after numerous steps, a spermatozoa into a cell that behaves like an egg cell. They did this by deactivating the imprinting barrier, which is found at twenty points in the genome, through gene editing with CRISPR tools. This cell (now with the genetic characteristics of an egg) can be combined with another spermatozoa to create a viable mouse embryo. That embryo is gestated by a mouse, and the mice that are born are derived from two sperm, from two fathers, without the genetic involvement of eggs, or a mother.
This process is still not without problems. As the study's authors acknowledge, the mice created by this process are not fertile, and can only be reproduced through cloning.
Additionally, more than half of the mice born to two fathers either do not survive, die young, fail to mature properly, or fail to reach adulthood.
In a previous study from 2018, the same research team had shown that mice born to two mothers were fertile and survived longer than those born to two fathers, all of whom died shortly after birth. In their new study, published last month, the results have improved, though only partially.
Though these experimental studies were conducted on mice, they raise the question of whether such procedures could ever safely produce human embryos, and what impact this would have.
This is not yet possible, though if it were, it would revolutionise fertility treatments. Male same-sex couples, for instance, could both be the biological parents of their children – one would provide sperm and the other would provide pluripotent stem cells which, following either of the two procedures (that of the Japanese or the Chinese researchers), would produce eggs that could be fertilised in vitro and gestated by a woman through surrogacy. Surrogacy is illegal across much of the EU, but permitted in other countries.
Similarly, a female same-sex couple could also have biological children, where one contributes eggs and the other pluripotent stem cells that end up producing sperm. Either of the two women could gestate the resulting embryo, and the children born would be the biological children of both mothers.
For the moment, these human applications remain in the realm of science fiction – they are not yet technically possible, and it would be unwise to try to implement them. However, assuming that all these processes will be optimised to the point where we can consider offering them in fertility clinics, I believe it is important to reflect on this. We must ask ourselves, as a society, whether we would be willing to ethically and legally accept these techniques.

Why it matters: Similar "races" of the past — like the nuclear arms race and the space race — have sparked innovation, but victories haven't lasted long or meant much. The big picture: Both Silicon Valley and the U.S. government now agree that we must invest untold billions to build supporting infrastructure for an error-prone, energy-hungry technology with an unproven business model and an unpredictable impact on the economy and jobs. What they're saying:"America is the country that started the AI race. And as president of the United States, I'm here today to declare that America is going to win it," Trump said at a Wednesday event titled "Winning the AI Race." Policy experts and industry leaders who promote the "race" idea argue that the U.S. and China are in a head-to-head competition to win the future of AI by achieving research breakthroughs, establishing the technology's standards and breaking the AGI or "superintelligence" barrier. They suggest that the world faces a binary choice between free, U.S.-developed AI imbued with democratic values or a Chinese alternative that's under the thumb of the Communist Party. Flashback: The last time a scientific race had truly world-shaping consequences was during the Second World War, as the Manhattan Project beat the Nazis to the atomic bomb. But Germany surrendered well before the U.S. had revealed or made use of its discovery. The nuclear arms race with the Soviet Union that followed was a decades-long stalemate that cost fortunes and more than once left the planet teetering on an apocalyptic brink. The 1960s space race was similarly inconclusive. Russia got humanity into space ahead of the U.S., but the U.S. made it to the moon first. Once that leg of the race was over, both countries retreated from further human exploration of space for decades. State of play: With AI, U.S. leaders are once again saying the race is on — but this time the scorecard is even murkier. "Build a bomb before Hitler" or "Put a man on the moon" are comprehensible objectives, but no one is providing similar clarity for the AI competition. The best the industry can say is that we are racing toward AI that's smarter than people. But no two companies or experts have the same definition of "smart" — for humans or AI models. We can't even say with confidence which of any two AI models is "smarter" right now, because we lack good measures and we don't always know or agree on what we want the technology to do. Between the lines: The "beat China" drumbeat is coming largely from inside the industry, which now has a direct line to the White House via Trump's AI adviser, David Sacks. "Whoever ends up winning ends up building the AI rails for the world," OpenAI chief global affairs officer Chris Lehane said at an Axios event in March. Arguing for controls on U.S. chip exports to China earlier this year, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei described competitor DeepSeek as "beholden to an authoritarian government that has committed human rights violations, has behaved aggressively on the world stage, and will be far more unfettered in these actions if they're able to match the U.S. in AI." Yes, but: In the era of the second Trump administration, many Americans view their own government as increasingly authoritarian. With Trump himself getting into the business of dictating the political slant of AI products, it's harder for America's champions to sell U.S. alternatives as more "free." China has been catching up to the U.S. in AI research and development, most tech experts agree. They see the U.S. maintaining a shrinking lead of at most a couple of years and perhaps as little as months. But this edge is largely meaningless, since innovations propagate broadly and quickly in the AI industry. And cultural and language differences mean that the U.S. and its allies will never just switch over to Chinese suppliers even if their AI outruns the U.S. competition. In this, AI is more like social media than like steel, solar panels or other fungible goods. The bottom line: The U.S. and China are both going to have increasingly advanced AI in coming years. The race between them is more a convenient fiction that marshals money and minds than a real conflict with an outcome that matters.

You know, you're you're kind of like, you know, I can work in, like, for three days and without any sleep, but. But not anymore. Okay, Not anymore. And you have to. You can not, like, work 30 days and to have any sleep, okay? There's no way you could do that Work ethic in China. Yeah. Yeah. But I would say collectively, we can have an A very fast data ratio. Okay. Like. So that's why I really like a start. Would start with a mindset. So basically, you know, like deep sea could do something very fast. Okay. And, and then, like, we also have. Okay. Mm hmm. Yeah. Yeah. You're talking I guess about more of a marathon, not just a sprint race. Yes. Is there space, though, for new contestants to enter that race today? Uh, I would say at least for A.I., it's a marathon because I think and nobody could really see, you know, if it's an hour hour journey, it is staffing in the very beginning. Okay? So in that sense, you know, in a any short term way is not important and it's not like, you know, it. Again, I will say it, this a very important judgment. All you have to I think we have to make that a judgment is, you know, whether any advantage you have today is a barrier for other people to catch up. You okay? But but personally, I. I didn't see any advantage you have today will become the barrier for other people to catch up. Okay. It's just not early early process to not to net to next stage. Okay. And so that's why it's very exciting. Very exciting time for that. Anything that other areas stage, anything that actually everyday news things happen. It's exciting time, especially for youngsters. Okay. Yeah. You mentioned Kimmy from Moonshot and yeah, Alibaba's own model. I mean, is there any of the of the small language models, the large language models that stand out to you in particular in China today? Actually, that's a I would say there's a lot and but because of but you'd really want to get get to know by other people that's hard. China is really and that and and that and our country that benefit from the stable mindset. So obviously if you look at the young people, you know for at least for for the people that I have have a chance to to to to reach, they have very good stab at the mindset. And in particular, like in an area like a like a Hangzhou and all this area, you know, that is just consider that area. I'm not sure they know about some of the saying that in Hanzo I don't have the statistics but but it's basically the people talking about. So if you counting the people in Hanzo and every four or five people there was there is a CEO's. Okay. So it just means people just love to do some, some things. So it is a it is fascinating and I think it's still good for the for the for the for that I'd love to see that statistic one in five on the streets of hunger being a being a see Yeah you know hometown vice. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. But when it comes to. Building an AI model today in China. What's the biggest challenge and is it on getting it to market and getting that awareness and getting people to use it? Or is it more on the building side? And I would say that the creativity is and and the reason I said I did, I really think, you know, I have an equation about what's the challenge you have in term that and the people always said, okay, the computing power probably is the barrier for us to do that. Okay. Actually, I don't think at this moment long term it is, but I just love it. I don't think it is. Okay. So particularly in the in the in the last six miles or 12 miles, that's particularly true. And what I that's what I want to say is, you know why I say it's a creativity, you know, the foundation motto from cookie and if deep sea are good enough, they are already much better than Full pond. Okay, I'm taking a look at the book here that you wrote about. Also the journey around on Alibaba Cloud and your vision for the business. And the foreword is written by Jack Ma. Yeah. And and he says that the first time he met you, he was shocked by your vision of the future of Internet technology and also that he wished that you've met earlier. What I find interesting, though, is that you actually had to convince him and others at Alibaba that cloud was the right business. Yeah, because, you know, fundamentally, I was there. The club business is very different, Internet business, fundamentally. Okay. So but thinking about, you know, almost 20 years ago, the the core Internet, the mindset is everywhere. Okay. So for the cloud computing is not that fit in that sense. Yes, that's one thing. The second is concubine is very different intimate business. I always said to my career, I'm very lucky to working on the first. It's a technology not like any other business. You know, they started with a business to business to business and and technologies to help the business, okay. With a compete in that case. So you have to have the technology first. That's the key. So is a technology. The second, you know, not every not every technology could become that business. Okay. That's why I always said only, you know, only 1% technology could be an A business. So when we use analogy about, you know, between the electricity and a computing is me a lot of things, okay, so electricity is elastic business. It would be for another 100 years. Okay. So that's the hard part for for, for the people to really understand. So at the very beginning it is hard. Yeah. I think something that we see right now is, is certainly money that's being directed at strong talent. Yeah. And and there's stories, of course, in Silicon Valley, we see people that are getting hundreds of millions of dollars. And yeah. What do you think about that? I think it's a I don't think it's that it's the let's see. It's a typical way of doing thing. They'll get out of that. The reason very simple. You know, example, when I when I study that, that they're able to cut out, you know, the first thing I did that was in Tucson eight the first I did it to get to Silicon Valley and to try to get tenant healthcare. And and and after talking to a lot of people and realize actually we don't have much a tenant there because new. Okay yeah so and also with some of the tenants it just too expensive and too expensive basically means okay you don't know whether the cannabis is there when is high when you hired these people. So it's really about innovation. So when you're in the early stage of innovation, I don't think a tenant is a problem because you know, they have the only thing you need to do is to get the right person. Not really is expensive person because if the new business, if this is true innovation, that it basically means the tenant and nobody cares about them. Okay. And I was working working on that. So for the today, what happened for the lack of matter is because they are very much a focus on the existing success of the business and existing. It's average all the technology that's the that that's that's, that's my view. Okay. So I think we have a tremendous opportunity to look at technology nobody knows to there and these talent these are current but but these are I can't say it's cheap but but it's it's available for you. Okay. So that's really about a vision, you know, where you want to where you want to go. And there's a lot of similar scenes, you know, happened during the last 20 years. Also, whenever everybody knows that these are talent and it's better for you not to Getty. This Dinosaur Probably Chirped Like a Bird

Scientists have discovered a dinosaur that might have chirped like a bird, a finding that suggests the evolutionary origins of birdsong may be far more ancient than we previously thought. In a paper published last week in the journal PeerJ, an international team of researchers describes a 163-million-year-old fossil found in northeastern China's Hebei Province. The fossil dinosaur, which they've dubbed Pulaosaurus qinglong, measures just 28 inches (72 centimeters) and is largely complete, giving researchers an unusually detailed look at its anatomy, including its surprisingly birdlike throat. 'Even when you have a dinosaur skeleton preserved, you don't always have these isolated bones preserved with other skull elements,' Xing Xu, a paleontologist at the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing and an author of the paper, told The New York Times. 'They're very thin bones, very delicate and hard to preserve.' In vertebrates, the vocal organs protect the airway and can produce sounds, including basic noises like hisses, groans, and grunts. In most living reptiles, these structures are made of cartilage and are relatively simple. Birds, however, have delicate, bony, flexible vocal organs that can make more complicated and diverse sounds. Pulaosuarus' throat seems somewhere between the two. Its vocal structures appear to be similar to that of another dinosaur, Pinacosaurus, a kind of ankylosaur with a large, bony larynx that may have been flexible enough to produce birdlike chirps and tweets, the researchers told the Times. The researchers believe that Pulaosaurus lived during the late Jurassic period and belonged to the same group of creatures that would later give rise to 'duck-billed' dinosaurs like hadrosaurs. But Pulaosaurus and Pinacosaurus are separated by millions of years of evolution, and neither belong to the group of dinosaurs that eventually produced birds. While it's possible they developed their vocal features independently, the presence of similar structures in such distinct species indicates that dinosaurs' ancient ancestors may have been pretty chirpy. That means the origins of birdsong could lie in creatures that lived more than 230 million years ago, but it remains a mystery as to how or when modern birds' voice box, called the syrinx, evolved—or if any dinosaur shared their incredible vocal prowess.
