Nicolas Cage 'could have died' getting 'pounded to smithereens' while filming latest movie
While filming for his latest role in "The Surfer," the 61-year-old actor revealed he "got pounded to smithereens" while practicing his surfing skills: a stunt, he said, that could've killed him.
"I have surfed, but every time I've attempted surfing, I've been pounded to smithereens," Cage, who plays a businessman who returns to Australia in hopes of buying his childhood beach house, told Entertainment Weekly. "I surfed down on Sunset Beach. When I was trying to learn, my teacher gave me a short board. I said, 'Look, I want a long board.'"
"I just got pounded and literally got stuck in the rip tide, and they said they saw my board, they call it 'tombstone,' like that triangle top," he continued, describing a situation in which the tip of his board stuck out of the water.
"I'm climbing up the leash as I'm somersaulting, and I could have died," he continued. "Now I have a young kid, I don't know if I want to do it anymore."
Not long ago, Cage, whose impressive career spans over four decades, expressed his desire to possibly retire.
"I feel that I've, at this point, after 45 years of doing this, that in over 100 movies, I feel I've pretty much said what I've had to say with cinema. And I'd like to leave on a high note and say adios," Cage told Uproxx in 2023.
"I think I have to do maybe three or four more movies before I can get there and then hopefully switch formats and go into some other way of expressing my acting."
"I would've liked to have left on a high note, like 'Dream Scenario.' But I have other contracts that I have to fulfill, so we'll see what happens," he continued. "I am going to be very severe and very [stringent] on the selection process moving forward. But for me to do another movie, I do want to explore other formats."
His end goal?
"The goal is to retire, surf, drink red wine and eat spaghetti," he told EW.

"And it always stuck with me," Matthew shared. "And then, during his passing, with the AI coming out, I'm like, 'Man, he's gotta be the voice of A.I. He's gotta be the voice in something.' So yeah, I would love to do that." "Fuck no," one reader tweeted in response. "This feels incredibly disrespectful." "I doubt his family wants that," another said. Sarah Chalke reveals her wish for upcoming 'Scrubs' revival: 'I don't know how that works into the storyline'
The actress, who played Dr. Elliot Reid on the medical sitcom, shared her dream plot point for the revival while visiting EW's video suite with her "Rick and Morty" costars at San Diego Comic-Con. This potential Scrubs storyline is just what the doctor ordered. No, literally. Sarah Chalke, who starred as Dr. Elliot Reid across all nine seasons of the celebrated medical sitcom, is sharing the toe-tapping plot point that she'd love to see included in the show's forthcoming reboot.'I can't tease any plot details because I don't know any because it's all so new," Chalke explains while visiting Entertainment Weekly's San Diego Comic-Con video suite for Rick and Morty. "Someone just asked me if I have any requests for the plots and I just said, 'Flash mob. I wanna be in the flash mob.' So, I don't know how that works into the storyline, but I think there's a way." After hearing Chalke's dream storyline, her Rick and Morty costars — Chris Parnell, Ian Cardoni, Harry Belden, and Spencer Grammer — immediately jump up from their seats and begin busting a move. "You wanted a flash mob?" Parnell, who plays Jerry, jokes. "Here we go, guys." But, in true Rick and Morty fashion, the well-intentioned gesture quickly goes off the rails. "No, that's not how we practiced it, you guys!" Belden shouts. "It was step left, then turn. Alright. Alright. Cut! Let's go again!" Still, Chalke can't help but be charmed by their efforts. Earlier this month, Entertainment Weekly confirmed that Chalke and fellow Scrubs alum Donald Faison, who played Dr. Christopher Turk, would be joining Zach Braff in the upcoming revival. Chalkecelebrated the news on Instagram by posting a throwback photo of her, Braff, and Faison with the caption: "YAY!!!!" In addition to the trio, original series creator Bill Lawrence is also scrubbing in as an executive producer on the revival. "Scrubs means so very much to me," he said in a statement. "So excited for the chance to get the band back together." An official logline for the series reveals that it will follow Braff's J.D. and Faison's Turk as they "scrub in together for the first time in a long time," adding, "medicine has changed, interns have changed, but their bromance has stood the test of time. Characters new and old navigate the waters of Sacred Heart with laughter, heart and some surprises along the way." The original Scrubs, which ran from 2001 until 2010, followed the trials and tribulations of J.D. and his pals as they worked at the fictional Sacred Heart Hospital. Dan Aykroyd explains why he skipped 'SNL 50' special and reveals moment that made him emotional watching at home
Aykroyd is still a devoted viewer of "Saturday Night Live" to this day. After all these years, Dan Aykroyd still isn't ready for primetime, but in this case, it was his choice. Earlier this year, Aykroyd, who broke out as an original member of the Saturday Night Live cast in the 1970s, was noticeably absent from the SNL 50 anniversary special. But he's still close to his Studio 8H roots and is even releasing a forthcoming graphic novel that continues the story of the Blues Brothers, one of his most iconic SNL characters. As it turns out, Aykroyd loves the NBC sketch show so much that he actively chose to sit out the 50th so that he could watch the special without interruption from home. "I wanted to be at home and I wanted to watch the show beginning to end," Aykroyd reveals to Entertainment Weekly while stopping by our video studio at Comic-Con 2025. "I knew if i was there, I'd be in a dressing room, I'd be working," he continues. "I wanted to see it live. I'm a fan of the show today, and I watch it all the time. I love these new players; I think they're just great. I just wanted to see and live nostalgically with my family in my own home, eating my own popcorn." Several of Aykroyd's fellow original cast members were present, however, including Laraine Newman and Jane Curtin. Newman even did a sketch with more recent alum Pete Davidson in which she reminisced about her time on the show, while Davidson reprised his recurring character of Chad, responding "Okay" to Newman's heartfelt memories. Newman and Curtin also were responsible for one of the night's most moving moments, holding up a photograph of the late Gilda Radner during the cast's goodbyes at the end of the show. "Lorraine's piece definitely," Aykroyd responds when asked about what segment of the show made him most emotional. "That was beautiful. That was wonderful." Aykroyd also reminisces about his time making The Blues Brothers alongside blues legends that he grew up admiring. He remembers his time filming with Aretha Franklin in the diner in particular, noting that he was incredibly nervous to be sharing the screen with her. "As soon as she started to sing, I got a feeling in my stomach," he shares. "When I stood up off the stool, I thought my legs were going to buckle.""Jake and Elwood are still in jail in 1997, and now they're trophies and no one wants to let them go," Aykroyd teases of the book, which hits shelves on Oct. 7.
