Navika Sagar Parikrama II voyage unaffected by container ship's capsizing on Kerala coast
Steered by lieutenant commanders Dilna K, who hails from Kozhikode in Kerala, and Pondicherry-native Roopa A, the vessel was slated to return to Goa this week, thus completing the second Navika Sagar Parikrama mission of the Indian Navy - a circumnavigation of the globe by women officers.
Though Tarini's location was withheld for the past many weeks on account of the ongoing Operation Sindoor, sailing enthusiasts had estimated that the duo, fondly called DilRoo, were just off the coast of Kerala, and very likely near these affected waters.

Another official told TNIE that instructions were already relayed to INSV Tarini 'to stay far away from the coast until it's time to enter Goa.' This, he clarified, was to avoid getting in the way of rescue and reconnaissance efforts surrounding the MSC ELSA 3 incident.
It was on October 2 last year that INSV Tarini departed for its ambitious voyage around the world. On its successful completion on Thursday, DilRoo will have covered over 21,600 nautical miles (approx 40,000 km) relying solely on wind power.
The voyage is the fourth expedition in the Navy's Sagar Parikrama series, and the second to be steered by an all-woman team.

Govt proposes mandatory towing vessel at all ports for emergencies
Against the backdrop of recent shipping disasters, the Directorate General of Shipping has proposed to make it mandatory for all Indian ports, whether major or non-major, handling 10 million metric tonnes (MMT) or more of cargo annually to designate at least one tug or towing vessel for emergency response. India has witnessed serious maritime incidents along its coastline that exposed vulnerabilities in the current emergency response framework. The sinking of container ship MSC ELSA 3 in May 2025 and major fire and explosion of container ship WAN HAI 503 in June 2025, off the coast of Kerala, led to falling of several containers in waters and the release of hazardous cargo and significant environmental risk. "In view of the challenges and urgent need enumerated above and to meet the requirements of Central/State/District/Port Disaster Management, the Directorate General of Shipping hereby mandates that all Indian portswhether Major or Non-major, Public or Privatehandling 10 million metric tonnes (MMT) or more of cargo annually and/or maintaining a fleet of two or more tugs for port operations shall designate at least one tug for emergency response," India's maritime regulator said in a draft notice issued for stakeholder consultation. Ernakulam has highest number of students in top 100 ranks for third consecutive year
KOCHI: The Kerala Engineering, Architecture, and Medical (KEAM) 2025 saw Ernakulam district bagging the top two ranks. John Shinoj of Muvattupuzha and Hari Kishan Baiju of Cherai ranked first and second in the KEAM 2025. Like last year, Ernakulam continues to have the highest number of candidates in the first 100 ranks. However, the numbers dropped from 24 in 2024 KEAM to 20 this year. It was 23 in 2023. Speaking to TNIE, Shinoj J Vattakuzhy, John's father, says, "John has always been a straight A student. He did his schooling in the ICSE syllabus. However, for the Higher Secondary course, he opted to join KE HSS at Mannanam in Kottayam. He scored 99.6 in his Plus Two examinations."
