Aker and Nscale to build $1 billion OpenAI plant in Norway

Agencies Norway's Aker ASA said on Thursday it was partnering with Nscale Global Holdings and OpenAI to build a large artificial intelligence facility in northern Norway, aiming to install 100,000 Nvidia processors by the end of 2026. The partnership, called Stargate Norway, will be fully powered by renewable energy, Norwegian conglomerate Aker said in a joint statement with Nscale and OpenAI. The centre is the first in Europe under OpenAI's Stargate programme and follows the recent announcement of similar-sized Stargate UAE in the United Arab Emirates, the US tech firm said. "This is one of the most ambitious AI infrastructure investments in Europe to date," OpenAI said in a blog post on its website. Aker ASA's shares rose 4.1% by 0715 GMT. Nscale and Aker will jointly own Stargate Norway, investing about $1 billion for the initial phase of the project and with the potential to increase the site's capacity tenfold in future phases, they said. "As OpenAI customers, Aker and Nscale will benefit from local access to models and AI services delivered via sovereign infrastructure," the companies said in their statement. The facility will run on Nvidia's advanced GB300 Superchip processors, connected by the US company's high-speed NVLink network technology, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said in a video presentation on the project. The facility, located in a hydropower-rich region of Norway, will be among the first AI gigafactories in Europe, Nscale CEO Josh Payne said in the statement. "Sovereign, scalable and sustainable infrastructure is now essential to remain competitive," he added. Stargate Norway is projected to consume an electrical power capacity of 230 megawatts (MW) for its operation, with ambitions to expand by an additional 290 MW, the companies said. Tata Motors seeks to expand revenues, access new technologies with $4.5 bln Iveco deal

Agencies Tata Motors acquires Iveco' Tata Motors' record $4.5 billion offer to buy Iveco's trucks and bus business will expand the commercial vehicle maker's revenues beyond India and give it access to the Italian company's future technologies including electrification. The all-cash deal marks the biggest transaction for Mumbai-based Tata Motors, which made its last big purchase in 2008 when it acquired Jaguar Land Rover from Ford Motor Co for $2.3 billion. Shares of Tata Motors fell as much as 2.4% on Thursday morning, reflecting concerns around possible high levels of debt and equity the truckmaker will need to raise, but recouped those losses and were little changed as of 0826 GMT. Iveco and Tata's commercial vehicles business will have combined revenues of about 22 billion euros ($25 billion), with half coming from Europe, 35% from India and the remainder from the Americas, the Indian automaker said in a statement to the stock exchanges late on Wednesday. This is "the next logical step" after Tata Motors' demerger of its three businesses - commercial vehicles, passenger cars and electric vehicles, the company's chairman N Chandrasekaran said in the statement. "(This) will allow the combined group to compete on a truly global basis with two strategic home markets in India and Europe," he read: Tata Motors to drive Iveco's CV business for $4.4 billion, the group's biggest cross border M&A since Corus The deal, expected to close by April 2026, will give Tata Motors' trucks and bus business a foothold in the European market, where it will go head-on with Volvo and Daimler. Tata already has a manufacturing and sales presence in Europe through Jaguar Land Rover, which has been a cash cow for the company but is increasingly facing pressure in its major markets of China and the United States. It will also get access to Iveco's future technologies including electrification as well as its talent pool.

Japan stocks rise, yen erases gains on BOJs cautious policy message

TOKYO, - Japanese stocks rose on Thursday while the yen shed early gains after the Bank of Japan flagged continuing risks to the economic outlook in keeping interest rates steady. In its quarterly outlook report, the BOJ said that although trade talks had seen progress, uncertainty surrounding each country's negotiations and the economic and inflationary impact remain high. The Nikkei share average ended the day up 1% at 41,069.82, while the broader Topix added 0.8%. The yen was trading flat at 149.51 per dollar as of 0753 GMT, erasing earlier gains of as much as 0.6%. Japan's currency lost ground during BOJ Governor Kazuo Ueda's press conference, as he said that underlying inflation was still below the central bank's 2% target, and that monetary tightening effectively works on demand-driven inflation rather than the supply-driven inflation Japan currently faces. Japanese 10-year government bond futures also ticked higher in extended trading as Ueda spoke. "The BOJ continues to be cautious on global risks, especially the tariff policy from the United States," said Tohru Sasaki, chief strategist at Fukuoka Financial Group. "And actually, between Japan and the U.S., their understanding of the tariff agreement is totally different, so there's still uncertainty." Ahead of the policy decision, traders had firmed up bets for the BOJ to resume raising rates from as early as October after Tokyo reached a long-awaited trade agreement with Washington earlier this month, removing a degree of uncertainty from the economic outlook. The yen initially strengthened and JGB futures declined after the BOJ's policy announcement and concurrent release of the outlook report, after the central bank revised up its inflation forecasts. Cash JGB yields also initially moved higher, but were flat to lower as investors digested the central bank's cautious message. The two-year yield, which is most sensitive to monetary policy expectations, was flat at 0.82%, after earlier rising to 0.835%. The 10-year yield slipped 0.5 basis point to 1.085%, reversing an earlier rise to 1.565%. This article was generated from an automated news agency feed without modifications to text.
