Chic beauty on a budget: Essential tips for affordable glam
Image: Anastasia Kazakova / Freepik
Looking good doesn't have to mean spending half your salary on beauty products.
In fact, some of the most effortlessly chic people out there rely on smart habits, not expensive products.
It's all about knowing where to spend, where to save, and how to use what you already have in clever ways.
If you're trying to upgrade your beauty routine without draining your bank account, here's how to look polished, confident, and put-together using affordable tricks that really work.
Healthy skin comes first
Great makeup starts with great skin. Instead of chasing the latest skincare trends, stick to the basics that actually matter.
Cleanse gently, moisturise daily, and never skip sunscreen.
Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid for hydration and niacinamide for smooth, even skin.
You can boost circulation and glow with a quick face massage while applying your moisturiser. It's free, feels good, and gives your skin an instant lift.
Budget tip: Instead of buying pricey serums, try natural oils like rosehip or jojoba, which can hydrate, nourish, and even double as a makeup remover.

Great makeup starts with good skin.

Focus on brows and lips
Well-shaped brows and a pop of colour on your lips can make a huge difference.
They frame your face and give you that "I made an effort" look, even when the rest of your makeup is minimal.
Try a tinted brow gel to shape and fill in your brows quickly, and choose a lip colour that makes you feel confident.
Soft pinks, warm browns, or classic berry shades are flattering and timeless.
Smart buy: Affordable brow pencils and lipsticks often perform just as well as those luxury brands.
Well-shaped brows can make a huge difference.

Use products that do double duty
Streamlining your makeup routine makes everything easier and more budget-friendly.
Opt for multi-use products, such as cream blushes that can double as lip tints, or bronzers that also serve as eyeshadow.
Using fewer products creates a more cohesive look and cuts down on clutter.
Tip: Use your fingers to apply cream products for a natural finish that blends seamlessly into your skin.
Find your signature
You don't need to master every beauty trend.
Choose one feature to highlight and make it your signature, whether it be glowing skin, a bold lip, a flick of eyeliner, or fluttery lashes.
Doing one thing consistently well gives you a polished, personal look that feels intentional and stylish.
Practice your go-to technique until it's second nature. That way, even on rushed mornings, you'll know exactly how to pull yourself together quickly.
Highlight your lips with a pop of colour.

Hair makes a difference
Don't underestimate the power of neat, shiny hair.
Whether you wear it natural, straightened, or in a protective style, keeping it clean and well-moisturised adds to your overall polish.
Simple styles like a sleek bun, low ponytail, or braided crown can look effortlessly chic with minimal effort.
Budget hack: DIY hair masks using pantry staples like coconut or olive oil can add shine and softness without salon prices.
Keep nails neat
You don't need a fresh gel mani every week.
Short, clean nails with a clear coat or neutral polish can look just as elegant.
If you're up for it, try press-on nails. They're affordable, reusable, and come in a variety of stylish options.
Short clean nails always look classy.

From Royal AM to Highlanders AM? Mama Joy awaits MaMkhize's call
Waiting Royal AM superfan "Mama Joy" Chauke says she's waiting to hear from Shauwn Mkhize about her membership to become a Mbabane Highlanders AM supporter. Photo: Instagram Image: Instagram What does the future hold for Royal AM superfan Mama Joy Chauke now that the club have been kicked out of the PSL after owner Shauwn Mkhize's financial misgivings? South Africa's favourite super fan says for now, she's waiting to get word from MaMkhize about the KwaZulu-Natal club's future. "I'm still with Royal AM. We are just waiting for her to give us the green light to follow her there, otherwise, I will remain a Royal AM supporter until she announces that Royal AM is no more," Mama Joy said on Sunday, according to KickOff. "She will inform us if we can support Highlanders. They must treat her well because, as their president, she will attend every game. Next Stay Close ✕ "Yesterday, I spoke with MaMkhize, and she mentioned that she is trying to organise travel packages for the Royal AM supporters so we can make our way to Eswatini. She added she remains fully committed to Royal AM – at least for now. "Personally, I'm still a card-carrying member of Royal AM, so I will become a Highlanders AM supporter once I receive their supporters' card. Interest from Eswatini is already pouring in. "I have been receiving many calls from Highlanders AM supporters in Eswatini, inviting me to join them. They want me to be part of their fanbase. Yesterday, I dominated all the front pages in Eswatini. And while Highlanders is a much larger club in that region, Mama Joy insists her loyalty is still tied to the original team – until told otherwise. "Highlanders is a huge team in Eswatini, with many more supporters compared to Royal AM, and they have qualified for the top eight. However, I am waiting for the Royal AM management to tell me what our next steps will be." Last week, the Durban businesswoman insisted on Robert Marawa's show on 947 that she did not buy the Eswatini club after she was appointed as their president. After her unveiling as their new president, she immediately rebranded the club Mbabane Highlanders AM. Mbabane Highlanders are the most successful team in Eswatini with 13 league titles to their name. However, they haven't been champions since 2001. In April, the PSL voted to kick MaMkhize's Royal AM out of the league. Royal AM had been placed under auction to recoup some of the R40 million that Mkhize owed to SARS. After an extensive bidding process, Durban businessman Roy Moodley appeared to have won the race to purchase the club, but after he could not cough up the funds, the sale collapsed, and the league decided to kick the club out. Reading your way to inner peace: books that heal the mind and spirit
The right book doesn't just entertain - it can hold your hand through life's darker passages. Image: Pexels/Gabby K In times of emotional fatigue or spiritual uncertainty, literature can be a balm. The right book doesn't just entertain - it can hold your hand through life's darker passages, help you make sense of complex inner turmoil and remind you that you are not alone. Whether you're on a quest for healing, self-acceptance or ancestral understanding, these three titles offer comfort, insight and a way to reconnect with yourself, your story and your spirit. Ngxande invites readers into a conversation that has long remained taboo, especially within religious and culturally conservative circles. 'Kwantu means home,' Ngxande explains, anchoring the text in the yearning for spiritual belonging. The book is a profound excavation of belief systems rooted in African soil, mapping their evolution through colonisation, Christian missionary influence and post-apartheid identity politics. Through meticulous historical research, personal reflection and interviews with healers, spiritual teachers and everyday South Africans, 'Journey Kwantu' asks hard questions: Who are we? What do we believe - and why? It challenges the binary often forced upon Black South Africans: be loyal to your Christian faith or honour your ancestors. But what if spirituality isn't a question of either or? Ngxande writes candidly about his own struggles - wrestling with the meaning of death, the concept of the afterlife, ancestral authority versus the Christian God and how to navigate ritual life in modern urban spaces. He explores how spiritual lineage shapes personal identity and the psychological costs of abandoning traditions under pressure to conform. 'How to Be Enough' is a soothing and empowering companion for those who are ready to live fully, not perfectly. Image: Supplied 'How to Be Enough: Self-Acceptance for Self-Critics and Perfectionists' by Dr Ellen Hendriksen Do you constantly chase the next achievement but secretly feel like a fraud? Are you your own harshest critic? You're not alone - and you may be dealing with perfectionism, the silent inner wrecker that convinces high achievers that nothing they do is ever good enough. In the book, Hendriksen, a clinical psychologist, offers an insightful and compassionate guide to untangling the roots of perfectionism. With warm humour and clinical expertise, she provides a roadmap to turn relentless self-improvement into radical self-acceptance. Perfectionism, she argues, isn't really about being perfect - it's about never feeling like you are. It shows up as constant self-monitoring, paralysing procrastination, shame over the smallest slip-ups and the chronic fear of being exposed as an impostor. But Hendriksen doesn't advocate throwing your high standards out the window; instead, she teaches readers how to keep their ambition and cultivate kindness toward themselves. The book is structured around seven practical mindset shifts - moving from self-criticism to self-compassion, from control to authenticity, from comparison to contentment. Along the way, Hendriksen helps readers rewrite their inner narratives, identify the origins of their impossible standards and build genuine human connections instead of chasing admiration. Perfect for anyone tired of the exhausting pursuit of flawlessness, 'How to Be Enough' is a soothing and empowering companion for those who are ready to live fully, not perfectly. 'The Lost Language of the Soul' follows the journey of 14-year-old Joseph Mabaso, a boy forced to grow up far too soon when his mother mysteriously disappears. Image: Supplied 'The Lost Language of the Soul' by Mandla Langa In this evocative coming-of-age novel, celebrated South African writer Mandla Langa delivers a touching tale of loss, courage and the search for identity. The book follows the journey of 14-year-old Joseph Mabaso, a boy forced to grow up far too soon when his mother mysteriously disappears. Set against the backdrop of 1980s Southern Africa, Mabaso's father is a freedom fighter who is often absent. But when his mother vanishes without explanation, he begins a dangerous quest that takes him from Lusaka through the war-scarred landscapes of southern Africa, eventually landing in Johannesburg. What starts as a desperate search for his mother turns into a profound journey of self-discovery. Mabaso encounters a host of unforgettable characters along the way - each one illuminating a different facet of survival, resilience and resistance. Langa masterfully intertwines political history with deeply personal storytelling. The novel is filled with lyrical passages about the power of language, the importance of memory and the spiritual significance of home, not just as a place, but as something carried within.

Glam up your home: Affordable secrets to an Instagram-ready space
Sticking to neutral tones gives your space a luxe feel. Image: House Method / Unsplash If you dream of an Instagram-worthy home filled with perfect lighting and luxurious textures, but your bank account tells a different story, it's easy to just sigh and keep scrolling. However, with a few smart, budget-friendly tricks, you can in fact transform your home into a dreamy sanctuary. It's all about strategic styling, a little bit of elbow grease, and knowing where to spend your money wisely. Here's a room-by-room, step-by-step guide to make your home look luxe. Bedroom Your bedroom should be a haven, a place where you can unwind and feel completely at ease. Change your bedding: Ditch the over-the-top florals and opt for neutral colours like crisp white, soft grey, or soothing beige instead. Add some plush throw pillows and a textured blanket at the foot of the bed. Curtain call: Ditch those flimsy curtains. Floor-length curtains hung high above the window frame will make your ceilings appear taller and give a more elegant, tailored look. Opt for natural fabrics like linen or cotton blends. Lighting is key: Harsh overhead lighting is a no-no. Instead, layer your lighting. Add bedside lamps with warm-toned bulbs for a cosy glow. Declutter your dressing table: Clear off surfaces and only keep a few meaningful decorative items. A tidy space promotes a peaceful mind. Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ Stick to neutral tone bedding and add bedside lamp. Image: Cats Coming / Pexels Bathroom This is a room often overlooked, but a little pampering here goes a long way. Declutter and deep clean: First things first, get rid of all those half-empty bottles and forgotten toiletries. A clean, uncluttered space immediately feels more luxurious. Fresh linen: Replace old, tired towels with crisp, fluffy new ones. White or neutral tones always look chic and spa-like. They don't have to be the most expensive towel sets either. Upgrade hardware: Those old, tarnished tap handles? You'd be surprised what a difference new, affordable hardware can make. Look for matte black or brushed gold options for a modern touch. Add greenery: A small plant, like a snake plant or a peace lily, instantly brings life and freshness. Even a small vase with fresh flowers can elevate the space. Add a touch of greenery in your bathroom. Image: Fujiphilm / Unsplash Kitchen This is often the busiest area in the house, so making it look good on a budget is all about smart updates and clever organisation. Hardware: Just like the bathroom, new cabinet and drawer handles can completely transform the look of your kitchen cabinets. It might be a small change, but it has a huge impact. Peel-and-stick backsplash: Want to update your backsplash without the hassle and cost of re-tiling? Peel-and-stick tiles come in an incredible variety of patterns and colours, mimicking everything from subway tile to marble, at a fraction of the price. Fresh coat of paint: A new lick of paint on your kitchen walls can brighten and modernise the entire space. Consider a neutral colour for a timeless feel. Organise and declutter: Clear off your countertops. Store appliances you don't use daily. Invest in stylish storage solutions like jars for dry goods. A tidy kitchen always looks more polished. Add greenery or fruit: A simple bowl of fresh fruit or a small potted herb plant on the counter adds a touch of life and colour without costing much. Invest in stylish storage solutions. Image: Pavel Danilyuk / Pexels Living room This is where you relax, entertain, and make memories. Rearrange furniture: Before you buy anything new, try rearranging your existing furniture. Sometimes, a fresh layout is all you need. Pillows and throws: These are your secret weapons for instant luxury. Mix and match textures like velvet, faux fur, and chunky knits. Choose colours that complement your existing furniture. Statement rug: A good rug can anchor a room and add warmth, texture, and sophistication. You don't need a massive, expensive rug. Look for geometric patterns or natural fibres like jute for a chic look. Artwork on a budget: Create a gallery wall with affordable prints, or even your own photos. Look for frames at discount stores or secondhand shops. Strategic lighting: Single overhead lights are a no-go. Add a floor lamp and a couple of table lamps to create warm, inviting pools of light. Declutter surfaces: Coffee tables and bookshelves can quickly become dumping grounds. Less is often more when it comes to creating a luxurious feel. Opt for pillows in different textures. Image: Ryutaro Tsukata / Pexels Remember, it's not about how much you spend, but how smart you spend it. With these budget-friendly tips, you'll have your home looking Instagram-ready in no time, and your friends will be asking for your decorating secrets. IOL Lifestyle
