Wallabies look to get Suaalii more involved in second Lions test
Suaalii made an explosive entry into test rugby against England last November but was a bit part player as the Wallabies were dominated by the Lions for the first hour of the 27-19 loss in Brisbane last week.
Inside centre Ikitau took the crash ball option more often than not in the face of a fierce Lions rush defence with the result that Suaalii received very little clean possession to exploit.
"We've only played a handful of games together but it's just trying to understand in what places he'd like to get the ball and kind of just feeding off each other," Ikitau told reporters on Tuesday.
"I felt like I didn't really get him into the game as early as I wanted, but that's a lot of learnings that I can take moving forward."
Suaalii was not the only Australian back who struggled to get his hands on the ball in the first half of the series opener with talented right winger Max Jorgensen restricted to a couple of touches before he scored a try off a box kick.
"We knew there were opportunities with their line speed and how they wanted to attack us in defence, but I think just being able to pull the trigger when the opportunity comes and backing our ability to pull the trigger," Ikitau said.
"A few times I think we were just conservative and held the ball where there's opportunities out wide."
Some in Australia have urged coach Joe Schmidt to rejig his backline and give Suaalii a run in the outside backs on Saturday.
"To be honest, if he's on the field that's the best thing for us, just somewhere on the field," said Ikitau.
"If he's playing 13, if he's on the wing, fullback, I know that he's just a freak of an athlete and he can step up to the occasion and just play his footy.
"He always (says) at the end of the day, it's a footy game and he's a footballer so I don't think it would faze him."

Rugby league-Walters confirmed as Kangaroos coach for Ashes tour
SYDNEY, July 23 (Reuters) - Former Brisbane Broncos and Queensland coach Kevin Walters will lead Australia's Kangaroos on this year's three-test tour of England, where rugby league's Ashes will be contested for the first time in 22 years. The post became vacant when Mal Meninga was recruited to head up the new National Rugby League (NRL) expansion team in Perth and 57-year-old Walters was favourite to get the job once Brad Fittler ruled himself out. "Kevin has played for the Kangaroos, had a successful coaching career with Brisbane Broncos and Queensland Maroons, and will bring that expertise into the national team for the Ashes," Australian rugby league supremo Peter V'landys said in a statement on Wednesday. "Kevin has toured with the Kangaroos as a player, was a leader as a player and as a coach. His coaching pedigree is a natural fit for the national team." Walters has been handed a contract only for the three matches in London, Liverpool and Leeds in late October and early November, but a good showing by Australia could earn him an extension until next year's much-delayed World Cup. Similar to the cricket rivalry of the same name, rugby league's Ashes were contested between Australia and Britain 39 times between 1908 and 2003. Australia won the last 13 editions.

Eddie McGuire opens up for the first time about why he tried to BUY an AFL team - 'could be a powerhouse'
AFL identity Eddie McGuire has sensationally revealed he tried to buy the Gold Coast Suns. In a development that will stun many footy fans, the former Collingwood president dropped the bombshell on Nine's Eddie and Jimmy podcast with Geelong great Jimmy Bartel. McGuire dropped the bombshell that he considered launching a takeover of the Suns while he was discussing a footy academy in the Northern Territory. He felt the academy in the Top End should be sending players to the North Melbourne Kangaroos, whose slow rebuild continues. 'Eddie Everywhere' was adamant the Suns - who have never played finals footy dating back to their entry into the league in 2011 - already have a competitive roster. 'I actually did approach the AFL to see if I could buy them (Gold Coast)....we had a conversation,' he told a stunned Bartel. 'There wasn't a sit down but we did kick it around, there was others involved in it, some big names in football and business and the like. '(In saying that) Collingwood's my heart, I'm not going to do anything against the Pies. 'But just looking at it and going through it and how you could set it up, the Gold Coast could be a powerhouse. 'If there was a team outside of Collingwood I could buy, I'd buy them.' Meanwhile, the Channel Nine identity has also proposed an AFL fixture revamp he believes would boost attendances, increase TV ratings and potentially secure future media rights deals. McGuire's radical proposal would break the AFL draw into three parts – a home-and-away season across 17 rounds, a qualifying system followed by a final eight showdown to the Grand Final. He would also introduce a couple of 'Exotic Rounds' that would first see all 10 Victorian teams play each other in round one. Elsewhere, Queensland teams would line up against the NSW teams and South Australian teams would tackle the Western Australian teams. A second Exotic Round could be played in South Australia when the state hosts Gather Round, which is locked in until at least 2026.

Kristie Mewis drops big news about her wedding to Sam Kerr - and it proves the event is closer than you think
Sam Kerr 's fiancee Kristie Mewis has sent fans into a frenzy with a hint that her walk down the aisle with the Matildas skipper is not far away. The happy couple, who got engaged in 2023, have so far kept details of their wedding plans behind closed doors. However, the American footballer, took to social media on Tuesday to reveal that she is currently shopping for a wedding dress, suggesting the big day might be closer than anticipated. Mewis posted an Instagram clip of herself travelling in a car with the caption: 'Wedding dress shopping OMG help'. The sporting couple, who welcomed their son Jagger Mewis-Kerr in May, have been open about their relationship, with the goal-scoring machine previously declaring 'they are not private people'. 'I like sharing my story. I like sharing who I am outside of football,' Kerr said. The athletes began their relationship during the 2020 Covid lockdown and officially announced it on Instagram in 2021. But speculation began to swirl about their relationship started during the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, when Team USA faced Australia in the bronze medal match. After the US secured the bronze, Mewis comforted Kerr on the field with an emotional hug, sparking widespread dating rumours. In a January 2023 interview, the couple confirmed they had been together since 2020. 'We were forced to talk,' Mewis said of their early relationship, which began during lockdown. Kerr added, 'It was about three or four months until we could hang out in person. The first time we ever met there was quarantine, so we had to spend two weeks together. I was thinking if I don't like her, this is going to be awkward.' The couple were also involved in a love triangle situation at the FIFA Women's World Cup held in Australia and New Zealand, with Mewis' ex-partner Rachel Daly lining up for England. Daly and Mewis dated from 2017 to 2019 before going their separate ways, however Daly showed at the World Cup she had a long memory when it came to their split. Kerr and Daly colllided in the World Cup semi-final when England beat Australia 3-1 - and the English star let Mewis' new flame know all about it. The couple were recently photographed inspecting the work that's being done on what looks to be their forever home in Perth in a Daily Mail Australia exclusive. Kerr and Mewis bought a beachfront block of land in the upmarket North Coogee area for $940,000 in August 2023 and are building a three-storey mansion just a short drive from the suburb where the Matildas striker grew up. Their relationship has drawn attention not only for their high-profile soccer careers but also for their openness. Mewis has expressed hope that their love story can inspire others. 'I think just being out and being two girls in love, if we can change one or two people's lives and how comfortable they feel, that means a lot to me,' she shared in her interview with Gaffer.
