'Hasn't done anything': State of Origin hero under fire over 'disappointing' scenes

Yahoo7 hours ago
League great Greg Alexander has ruled the Cowboys out of playing finals footy this season after Thursday night's disappointing defeat to the Dolphins. And he's singled out Queensland State of Origin winner Reuben Cotter for specific criticism, after the Maroons back-rower continued his underwhelming club form for North Queensland.
The Cowboys were blown off the park in the 43-24 flogging by the Dolphins, who ran in seven tries to four to jump into seventh on the NRL ladder. It was another dismal defensive display from North Queensland, who have the worst record in the competition after conceding a staggering 531 points in their 18 games so far this season. That equates to an alarming average of almost 30 points against per game and heaps more pressure on coach Todd Payten.
As it currently stands, North Queensland are five points adrift of the top eight with six games to go. But Alexander said on the evidence of Thursday night's heavy defeat and their woeful recent form, he gives them no chance of featuring in this year's finals series.
'Put a line through the Cowboys after last night, it's the end of them,' Alexander said on SEN radio on Friday. 'Even though their draw is favourable, and they still have a bye up their sleeves, I can't see the Cowboys rallying after that."
Reuben Cotter's form for the Cowboys under fire
And Alexander says the form of Cotter has been particularly concerning after his impressive performances for Queensland in this year's Origin series win. The Maroons back-rower has been nowhere near his best for the Cowboys in 2025 and is averaging just 88 run metres and less than nine hit-ups per game, from his 12 appearances in clubland this season.

'Some of their players, Reuben Cotter has only had two good games, and they were both for Queensland," Alexander said about the Maroons star. "He hasn't done anything for the Cowboys this year. He has been very disappointing as he was again last night.'
Cotter's form does not bode well for his hopes of selection in the Kangaroos squad for their Ashes series against England later this year. The Cowboys forward has been a mainstay in the Kangaroos squads in recent years and played in their victorious Pacific Championships campaign last year, and was part of Australia's squad for their World Cup triumph in 2023. But he's fallen well down the pecking order in terms of the NRL's best back-rowers this season.
Cowboys slip further out of NRL finals contention
And it's indicative of the struggles of the star-studded Cowboys, who had four players featuring on Thursday night against the Dolphins that played in last week's Origin decider. Winger Murray Taulagi - who suffered a late hamstring injury - has also been a regular for the Maroons in recent years. But they are now staring down the barrel of missing the finals for a third time under Payten, having made it to the second week of the playoffs last season.
Many critics insist the Cowboys should be pushing for the top-four but Payten has been unable to get the best out of his star-studded side in 2025. And it's left his position in serious threat, with the Cowboys slipping out of finals contention after six losses in their last seven games.
"Their defence is just terrible," veteran NRL reporter Andrew Webster said on SEN radio. "I know they can score points and we saw that with three tries in eight minutes (against the Dolphins) but I don't know if it's the coach, I don't know what's wrong with them but they just don't seem to be able to stop points."

How to watch Australia vs Lions Test 1: Live stream the 2025 rugby game for FREE

After six warmups and five victories — some more convincing than others — it's showtime for the Lions. As suspected, Andy Farrell has gone with the all-Scottish midfield pairing of Huw Jones and Simone Tuipulotu, though there are a couple of surprises too. Mega prospect Tom Lynagh, son of Wallabies legend Michael, makes his first international start at Lang Park in Brisbane, home to his club side the Queensland Reds. You can watch Australia vs Lions Test 1 live streams from anywhere with a VPN and potentially for FREE. The Australia vs Lions Test 1 live stream takes place on Saturday, July 19.• Time: 6 a.m. ET / 3 a.m. PT / 11 a.m. BST / 8 p.m. AEST• FREE STREAM — 9Now (Australia)• U.S. — CBS via Fubo or Paramount Plus• U.K. — Sky Sports• Watch anywhere — try NordVPN 100% risk free Lynagh was always likely to feature in the series, but he's been thrust into the heart of the spotlight earlier than expected because Australia's regular starting fly-half, Noah Lolesio, is out injured. Lynagh has three caps to his name, all of which were earned from the bench. Rob Valetini and Will Skelton are also sidelined. Having only just avoided losing to Fiji on home soil for the first time in more than 70 years in their one and only warmup fixture, it's fair to say that Joe Schmidt's men aren't starting the triple-header from a position of strength. In Lynagh, Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii and Len Ikitau, however, there's the foundation of a really exciting team. Farrell's selection of Tom Curry over Jac Morgan, who's arguably been the Lions' player of the tour so far, has raised eyebrows, while Tadhg Beirne can consider himself fortunate to have gotten the nod over Ollie Chessum. Australia v British and Irish Lions - first Test Venue: Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane Date: Saturday, 19 July Kick-off: 11:00 BST Coverage: Live text commentary on the BBC Sport website and app with post-match analysis on iPlayer, BBC Radio 5 Live and Rugby Union Weekly podcast. The British and Irish Lions face Australia in Brisbane on Saturday in the opening match of a three-Test series. The tourists are unbeaten on Australian soil this summer following victories over Western Force, Queensland Reds, NSW Waratahs, Brumbies and an Invitational AU & NZ side. Andy Farrell's side will be looking to emulate the series win on the last Lions visit Down Under in 2013. For team news, the Wallabies form and how to follow the game on BBC Sport - here's all you need to know. Injuries hit Australia but 'X-factor' centres will test Lions The Lions team is out! Townsend salutes 'Huwipulotu', the Lions midfield made in Scotland Who is in the Australia team? Australia have named an under-strength pack without powerful lock Will Skelton and flanker Rob Valetini, who both have calf injuries. Debutant Nick Champion de Crespigny will start at number six, while head coach Joe Schmidt has also handed a first Test start to Tom Lynagh, the son of Wallaby great Michael, in the absence of regular fly-half Noah Lolesio. Former Australia hooker Stephen Moore says the hosts are short on cover in that position. "Since Stephen Larkham retired in 2007 we haven't had an out-and-out world class number 10," Moore told BBC Rugby Union Weekly. "Joe [Schmidt] will try to make sure Lynagh's job is kept as simple as possible but 10 is a gap for us." Harry Wilson will captain the Wallabies from number eight, while Nick Frost and Jeremy Williams will pair up in the second row. In midfield, Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii and Len Ikitau continue their exciting centre partnership. The 'posh lad from Richmond' steering the Wallabies against the Lions How is the Wallabies' form? Australia are ranked sixth in the world after captain Harry Wilson's last-gasp try denied Fiji a famous win in the Wallabies' only warm-up fixture. Schmidt's side showed shoots of recovery after a disappointing 2024 Rugby Championship with impressive autumn victories over England and Wales before ending their European campaign with defeats by Scotland and Ireland. Despite missing key players, former Australia scrum-half Will Genia says the hosts can still claim a famous series win. "I look at that Lions team on paper and I think – what a team," Genia told BBC Rugby Union Weekly. "There are world-class players all across it but I do give us a chance. We have some athletes in our team that can really challenge this Lions team and if we can create some time and space for them we can get in the game. "Whoever wins the first Test will win the series because you gain confidence and rhythm for the remaining games. "I think Australia win 2-1 with victories in the first and third Tests." And then there were none... Welsh rugby reels from Lions blow All-Scottish midfield named for first Lions Test Why Lions series could save rugby union in Australia Lions team news Tom Curry has won the hotly contested battle for selection at open-side flanker. The England back row beat fierce competition from Wales' Jac Morgan and Ireland's former world player of the player Josh van der Flier to line up alongside Tadhg Beirne and Jack Conan in the back row. Morgan's omission means for the first time since 1896 there is no Welshman in the squad for a Test against traditional opponents Australia, New Zealand or South Africa. Henry Pollock also misses out on selection in the matchday squad, with England pair Ollie Chessum and Ben Earl providing back row cover on the bench. Farrell has named an all-Scotland midfield with Finn Russell steering the attack from fly-half and Sione Tuipulotu and Huw Jones pairing up in the centre. Ireland have eight starters, equalling the record of most Ireland players to start a Lions Test - with seven of them from Leinster. England have four in the starting XV and Scotland have three. Where is the match being played? The opening Test of the three-match series takes place at the 52,500-capacity Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane. Genia says Brisbane "feels like home" for the Wallabies. "I'd say it's the unofficial home of rugby in Australia," Genia told BBC Rugby Union Weekly. "Having played there myself it has a different feel about it. Even the boys from Sydney and the Brumbies [Canberra] have the same feeling. "It feels like a home ground for us so that will add a bit of confidence to the boys heading into the game." The Lions thumped Queensland Reds in their second tour match on Australian soil at the Suncorp earlier this summer. How SailGP Keeps the Boats From Breaking

Sailing wisdom holds that if a weakness exists, the sea will find it. The Australia SailGP team members experienced this firsthand just before the start of Race 7 of the Oracle San Francisco Sail Grand Prix in March, when the wing sail of their foiling F50 catamaran collapsed. No one was hurt, but an investigation revealed a construction problem affecting multiple boats. SailGP, which owns and maintains the league's 12 identical F50s, began to fix the problem. This included investigating the cause of the failure, canceling the next event and upgrading all of the fleet's wing sails. While this incident was striking, it illustrated a larger challenge for the league, which will hold its next event — the Emirates Great Britain Sail Grand Prix — in Portsmouth, England, on Saturday and Sunday. F50s may look like they effortlessly fly across the water on hydrofoils, but back ashore it takes a small army to ensure the boats are constantly ready and evenly matched. 'Every F50 has daily pre- and post-sailing checks that take place from all departments: electronics, hydraulics rigging, boat building,' said Joel Marginson, director of SailGP Technologies, the league's design, engineering and manufacturing operation. 'At the end of the event, all the boats and wings are completely disassembled and fully serviced.' Marginson said this included nondestructive testing — for example, ultrasonic testing, thermography and radiography — to identify any issues. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.
