Max Dowman: Arsenal's 'special' wonderkid who has wowed Declan Rice and Mikel Arteta
The hype around Max Dowman is nothing new, but that doesn't make it any less exciting for Arsenal fans.
The 15-year-old attacking midfielder has been on the radar for over a year, having broken records during his rapid ascent through the club's academy. But now he's coming good on that potential in pre-season with Mikel Arteta 's squad.
First he caught the eye as the Gunners defeated AC Milan 1-0 in their opening pre-season friendly. Then he took things to another level against Newcastle as they came through 3-2 against their Premier League opponents.
Dowman is still extremely young and inexperienced, but the raw talent he possesses means that Arteta could hand him more opportunities in the upcoming 2025/26 season. So here Mirror Football tells you all you need to know about the youngster.
Wilshere prodigy
Dowman has been turning heads at Arsenal's Hale End youth training ground for some time, having set a new record as the youngest player to score in the UEFA Youth League, at 14 years, eight months and 19 days, back in September.
In the age of readily available highlights clips, the excitement has been there for some time. Dowman had the perfect coach and mentor for some of his time in the youth set-up in the form of Jack Wilshere.
The former Arsenal and England midfielder was a coach in the Arsenal academy until October, when he left for Norwich. Having made his own Arsenal debut at the age of 16 years and 256 days – making him the club's youngest-ever league debutant at the time – Wilshere has a unique perspective on the subject.
'There's always a concern when fielding such a young player in these matches, but if you're good enough, you're old enough,' he said last year.
"He can be more consistent but he's only 14 and hasn't even started his GCSEs yet. We need to find a balance of letting him play and enjoy because of his age but also trying to get as much work into him as we can.' That process has gone pretty well so far.
Under Rice's wing
While they have been wary with Dowman, Arsenal have not been shy in testing him at higher levels. The left-footed attacking midfielder became the youngest ever Premier League 2 player in December and has also played for the England under-17s as a 14-year-old.
He was invited to Arsenal's warm-weather training camp in Dubai in the winter where Declan Rice took him under his wing, in the hope he can replicate the success of Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri.
'I have had so many texts about Max recently,' Rice told BBC Radio 5 Live in March. 'At 15, there is such a long way to go. You can be the best 15-year-old in the country, but it doesn't necessarily mean you are going to be at 18.
'So, you need to be hungry, keep working and keep pushing. I speak to Max a lot and he has got such a good family around him. He is unreal.'
Speaking about Arsenal's young trio of Lewis-Skelly, Nwaneri and Dowman, Rice added: 'I have a great relationship with all three of them, because Max gets to train with us quite a lot. I have kind of taken these three under my wing, because I have been in that position before and I had older players help me out. I get on well with all of them and they are really comfortable around me, which is all part of having a good relationship.'
'Very fast steps'
With Dowman not turning 16 until New Year 's Eve, Arsenal have a duty of care with Dowman and Arteta has been clear that they won't rush his development. 'Very impressive at his age,' he said earlier this year. ''He's a player with a huge talent that we have a lot belief that we can develop him into becoming one of our own and he's doing very well so far.
'At the moment with all the legislation there are a lot of restrictions, something that in other countries you don't even mention. We will have to wait and see. He's taking very fast steps because every time you give him a different challenge or put him at a different level he overcomes that quickly which is great. We are on it.'
Arteta's delight
Dowman scored a penalty in the shoot-out after the Milan win after he came off the bench for Bukayo Saka. He played on the right wing, showing no signs of nerves against the Italian giants and was even better against Newcastle.
It was his run down the right wing that drew a foul from Joelinton for Arsenal's late penalty. And it is clear that Arteta wouldn't hesitate to throw him into competitive matches now.
"It is special,' Arteta said after the Newcastle game. 'What he's done today against this team in the time that he had on the pitch, it is something certainly not common to witness for a 15-year-old. We are extremely happy to have him.
"The environment that is around him, his family, the people at the club and academy are super helpful because they put him in this position so early in his journey, having a real chance and a real presence when he plays for the first team."
Referring to Dowman, Marli Salmon and Josh Nichols, he added after the Milan win: 'I think they are able to play at that level at 15 years old in my opinion because of the environment and culture that is within the team.
'When somebody makes you feel so comfortable and so confident straightaway you can go and do it. At least it gives you the best chance and then you have to have the qualities this kid has to deliver against opposition like this.
'There is a lot of work in our academy of the coaches, people involved and it is a moment to give opportunities and reward them. They certainly took their chance today in difficult circumstances against a very big team. Incredible how at 15 years old they can perform at that level.'

David Moyes reveals injury concern and disappointment with two Everton stars
David Moyes admits he has been disappointed with both Beto and James Garner during Everton's pre-season, as he reveals an injury concern ahead of the new campaign. It has been a difficult summer for the Toffees in what should be an exciting time for the club as they move into their new stadium under new ownership. The squad is thin after the likes of Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Abdoulaye Doucoure, Mason Holgate and Ashley Young all left at the end of their contracts and signings have been slow to arrive. Carlos Alcaraz has made his loan move permanent and both Thierno Barry and Adam Aznou have arrived, but Moyes would like more arrivals before the season begins in two weeks. The Scotsman's frustrations are not limited to the transfer market, however, as he has voiced his unhappiness with a couple of players. In The Mixer: Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every week – click here and sign up before Friday to make sure you don't miss the first edition. Speaking before Everton's 2-2 friendly draw with Manchester United on Sunday, Moyes called out striker Beto, saying: 'I've been a bit disappointed with Beto and I've told him. We're needing a bit more and he can do more and he has done more. 'So we're hoping we can get a bit more from him, but he's a really honest working lad and I'm sure he'll try and prove that tonight.' Beto played 60 minutes of the match in Atlanta before being replaced by summer signing Barry, who he will be competing with to play up front this season. The Toffees boss also admitted he had been underwhelmed by the performances of James Garner so far this summer, but that changed thanks to his display against his former club on Sunday. 'I've actually been pretty disappointed in Jimmy in the early games in pre-season, but not tonight,' said the manager. 'Tonight, I thought he played really well and he actually went all of the distance. 'But you've got to remember, we've played Jimmy Garner at right wing-back because we've not had other people to do the job. Jimmy's a bit more flexible but we played him a little bit deeper and I thought as the game went on, he was the one who was still chugging along and I was pleased with him.' While Moyes was pleased to see James Tarkowski back in the team after injury and suggested Jarrad Branthwaite will soon be available again, there was less good news about Nathan Patterson. The defender has featured on the American tour but was not involved against the Red Devils, with the manager revealing he has a fitness concern. 'Nathan has got hernia symptoms,' said Moyes. 'Whether it means he's got a hernia or not, we're not sure, but we'll have him assessed on Tuesday after we get back.' Results-wise, Everton's pre-season has not been good, with Sunday's draw coming after defeats to West Ham, Bournemouth and Blackburn Rovers. More Trending Their final pre-season game comes on Saturday at home to Roma before their Premier League campaign begins at Leeds United on Monday August 18. On the prospect of new signings before then, Moyes said: 'I think there'll be deals next week. I think we're getting much closer. But I felt that four or five weeks ago as well. 'Obviously, we're getting near the tickly bits and we've got to get some things done.' Rodrygo makes final decision on future amid Arsenal, Liverpool & Spurs interest
Rodrygo has decided he wants to stay put at Real Madrid and is determined to show Xabi Alonso he can be a genuine force at the Bernabeu once again. At the start of last season, Rodrygo was viewed as one of Madrid's key assets having helped the club win 13 pieces of silverware across his stay in the Spanish capital. But Rodrygo increasingly found himself on the periphery of Carlo Ancelotti's plans as the 2024/25 campaign wore on, with Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Junior taking centre stage. Madrid bosses had reportedly grown concerned over Rodrygo's approach to training and rumours began to swirl over the Brazilian's future heading into the summer transfer window. There has been strong interest from the Premier League and Arsenal were the first to make enquiries over a proposed move for the 24-year-old forward back in May. In The Mixer: Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every week – click here and sign up before Friday to make sure you don't miss the first edition. Rodrygo's bit-part role across Madrid's Club World Cup campaign – in which he featured for a total of just 92 minutes – only fuelled speculation that the attacker's days with Los Blancos were numbered. And while Arsenal subsequently dropped their pursuit to focus on other targets, namely Noni Madueke, Viktor Gyokeres and Eberechi Eze, talk surrounding a proposed move to England remained – with both Liverpool and Tottenham keeping close tabs on developments. However, according to Spanish publication AS, Rodrygo is now 'banking on staying' with Madrid, while earning Alonso's trust and convincing the Spaniard that he fits perfectly into the new system. The report claims 'there is no sign of a move away' and 'there have been no significant offers' from potential suitors which would tempt Madrid into doing business. The Brazil international will return to Madrid's Valdebebas training complex 'recharged' today, fully committed to turning his fortunes around ahead of the new season. Despite some reports to the contrary, Madrid have never actively pushed Rodrygo towards the exit door – and the club would only have considered selling if they had received a bid of €90million (£78m) or more for the winger. Rodrygo's current contract with the Spanish giants runs through to June 2028. 'Holidays completed. Clear mind and many missions ahead!' Rodrygo told his followers on Instagram on Sunday. Alonso moved to dampen chatter over Rodrygo's future ahead of Madrid's Club World Cup clash with Al-Hilal last month, claiming the three-time La Liga winner was 'eager to contribute'. 'I know what happened last season. The end of the campaign wasn't easy for him,' the new Madrid head coach told reporters in Miami. 'He took some time to reset. We've talked since day one, and I see him eager to contribute on the field and enjoy himself.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Which fans are the hardest done by? Sky Bet reveals all with new data - and explains which supporters have it EASIEST
Sky Bet have settled one of social media's biggest football debates: which fans are the hardest done by. Backed by data experts Opta, they have analysed 13 main categories of data from the last five seasons for all 92 league clubs. From last-minute losses to ex-players coming back to haunt you, these are 13 different ways football can ruin your weekend. The report then surveyed hundreds of match-going fans to find out which stats carried the most sting. It's science - five seasons worth of data, multiplied by emotion - how awful that category is. The result? A never-before-seen league table ranking every fanbase in England - from the ones who've had it worst, to those who've had it best. The research reveals: • Arsenal fans have had the easiest ride of all Premier League supporters, ranking 88th. Across the country, only Chesterfield and Wrexham fans have had it easier. • Spurs fans are 60 positions worse off than Arsenal, coming 28th • Man City and Liverpool fans are also placed to be enjoying a smooth journey in the bottom 10, aka least hard done by. • Southampton supporters top the chart as the most suffering fanbase in England's top four divisions • Manchester United land mid-table at 44th, but they were the hardest done by in one category - the most-rained on supporters Kevin Brain, Head of Social and Content at Sky Betting and Gaming said, 'With our Start of Season campaign, 'Not for Everyone. For the Fans,' Sky Bet is celebrating the true spirit of football fandom. Partnering with SPORTbible's Hardest Done By Report lets us reward the passion, loyalty and resilience that make being a fan so special.' The data also threw out some interesting quirks that can be found below: • Due to having the ball in play for almost 15 minutes more per game, Man City fans watch 2 hours, 26 minutes, and 34 seconds more football than Accrington Stanley fans - despite playing eight games less! • The Premier League dominates the "errors leading to goals" stat, with 11 of the 18 worst offenders coming from the English top-flight, including Chelsea and Liverpool • Based on average motorway speeds, Plymouth fans have to drive for 80 minutes to see their team earn a single point. Arsenal fans travel for less than 30 minutes per point
