Joint venture for Tipperary tourism project would be a ‘game-changer'
Thurles Tourism Office had submitted an application for the latest round of the scheme for their tourism bus for the town, which would see visitors to the area picked up at the train station and driven around to see the sights in the area, such as Holycross Abbey, the Rock of Cashel, and Cormackstown Museum before being dropped back to their accommodation in the county or to the train station so they can continue their journey.
Speaking at the meeting, Cllr Ryan said that the idea behind the scheme is aiming to make tourism in Tipperary easier to access.
"The thinking behind it is to make it easier for people to come to Thurles, just get the train, they will be transported around various local tourist attractions and brought back to their accommodation and back to the train station,' he outlined.
"In my opinion it's a no-brainer, it would be a game-changer regarding local tourism if they were successful in getting funding for it,' the independent councillor added.
Questioning where the Thurles Tourist Office go from here with regards to accessing funding, the local councillor outlined that the project had been turned down under various funding streams in the past.
"Could it be some sort of link up with yourselves [Tipperary County Council] and the Tourist Office in Thurles regarding that project because something that I believe strongly is tourism and if there's something there to help it, and bring tourism to the Thurles area I think we should be supporting it.
"It's very disappointing for them that year after year they keep applying for various funding streams and they keep getting turned down,' he added.
'Could there be a joint partnership between the Thurles Tourism Office and the tourism section of the county council, maybe they come up with funding and the county council come up and match the funding, at this stage they've really gone for every single stream of funding,' Cllr Ryan said.
Councillors were informed at the meeting that the matter would come down to tourism budgets, which are set out in advance, but that members from the tourism section would talk to the head of the section to review the budget to see if there's any scope to get the scheme up and running for 2026.

The Spanish region undiscovered by Brits despite seaside views and ancient Roman cities
TREKKING up a steep ski slope wasn't on my radar for a summer mini-break in Spain. And the hike at an altitude of 2,300ft in the Pyrenees was leaving me a little breathless. 5 Vallter 2000 ski resort in the Pyrenees of Girona, Catalonia Credit: Alamy 5 Ryan and Scarlett at summit Credit: Supplied 5 Ryan, Kelly, Scarlett and Savannah soak up Girona Credit: Supplied But I was determined to keep up with my children, Savannah, 13, and Scarlett, 11, who had left me trailing. My wife Kelly and I had been promised the effort would be worth it for the spectacular views and, when we finally reached the peak, we were not disappointed. From our incredible viewpoint, our guide Xavi revealed the delights of the northern Spanish region of Many Brits may picture sun, sea and sangria when they think of Spain, but the lush green pastures, thick pine forests and tinkling cow bells give this area a truly peaceful Alpine appeal. READ MORE TRAVEL NEWS While Spanish tourists flock here all year round for hiking in the summer and snow sports over winter, the area remains relatively undiscovered for us. And with blue skies and milder temperatures, it could make for a much more temperate option for families keen to avoid the scorching south. After our three-hour trek at the Vallter 2000 ski resort, we were ready for a hearty meal and soon discovered the area is a secret foodie paradise, boasting a constellation of 20 Michelin stars. At the rustic Can Jepet, a family restaurant set in the picturesque mountain village of Setcases, we were treated to a memorable five-course tasting menu. Most read in News Travel The highlights included organic eggs with asparagus, fresh river trout and a warm cookie cake served with ice cream made from the local Birba biscuits. With bellies full, we checked into Hotel Grevol, our home for the next three nights. Martin Lewis warns about strict passport rule that could see you board your flight - only to get sent home on arrival This charming hotel's wooden decor evoked a Swiss ski lodge and its wellness centre was the perfect place to soothe aching limbs. The next day took us to nearby animal park Mollo Parc, where we wandered through a river valley, admiring native rabbits, baby goats, birds of prey and huge brown bears. Scarlett was especially delighted when the zookeeper invited her to help feed the marmots — a friendly meerkat-type creature — their healthy breakfast of carrots and courgettes. All-time top pudding Just next door is the Mollo adventure park, which offers Go Ape-style activities. I was more than happy to be the designated photographer, while my fearless daughters flew through the fir forests on zip wires. That afternoon there were more gastronomic delights on offer at Restaurant Can Calixto, where we feasted on seasonal dishes and local produce, including salmon with leek cream and juicy pork ribs. Our next stop was the small town of Camprodon, another hidden gem oozing history and situated idyllically beside the Ter River. Our culinary adventure concluded at Pont 9 restaurant, a favourite with locals and featuring an adventurous menu including pig's trotters and cuttlefish. It was here my daughter Savannah discovered her new all-time 'top pudding' — a warm, sugar-coated croissant-style pastry filled with Catalan cream. Girona has become a magnet for both professional and amateur cyclists, resulting in a buzzy and stylish cafe and restaurant scene. A walking tour took us up to the spectacular city walls, first built by the Romans in the 1st century BC, where we admired panoramic views. Winding our way back to our hotel through the city's cobbled alleyways, we spotted locations featured in smash hit TV series Game Of Thrones and walked across a striking red bridge. The radio host, who shared the news with his listeners on Tuesday, has now revealed how he carefully planned the romantic proposal to his long-term partner. Writing in his Mail on Sunday column, he said: "I don't want to give all the details but I do want to share a few moments because some people were enormously helpful along the way." READ MORE ON RYAN TUBRIDY Ryan explained that he had always planned to buy the ring in Clifden, an area which him and Clare both love and where the local jewellers has been a long-standing family run business. He explained: "I've also been preaching about shopping local for years so I wasn't going to Tiffany's… I called Jonty Daly in O'Dalaigh's and asked for some guidance and I can tell you, the man's a diamond!" The podcaster then went on to say: "The care, attention and thought he put into every detail was above and beyond, right down to him driving out to Renvyle House Hotel to deliver the 'package' to Anne Marie Kelly, the incomparable general manager there. It was all so much fun and it felt distinctly Irish." Ryan has often spoken about his love for the West Coast of Ireland, and this proposal showed just how much the area means to the pair. MOST READ IN THE IRISH SUN He said: "By the Atlantic shore, I asked the important question and thankfully, the answer was in the affirmative – and so began the most gorgeous weekend." The 52-year-old revealed that the "staff and joyful hotel patrons" helped make each part "feel special". Donncha O'Callaghan has Ryan Tubridy in stitches He added: "We called into Jonty the next day to thank him and his staff; there was a little confusion about online stories but that was entirely at my end. Jonty did not let the cat out of the bag, it was an innocent miscommunication and we're all firm friends. "In fact, he joined us at The Abbeyglen Castle Hotel that evening where my cousin Brian Hughes and his amazing wife, Michelle, raised a few glasses with another cousin, Rachael Coyle and her brilliant husband, Shane. "Another lovely night was had that ended with songs at the piano! After that, it was Scrabble, cycling and sleeping before boarding a plane in Shannon and heading to the skies a different man with a whole new vista ahead. I felt and feel lucky, happy and ready for another welcome twist in the tale." Earlier this week, the dad-of-two told his Virgin Radio UK listeners: "I have a little bit of news that I was kind of keeping a little bit to myself - to ourselves. "Even though I'm a public person doing the job I do, I also have quite a lot of privacy that I like to keep to myself. HAPPY COUPLE "However, the cat has been removed from the bag for a number of reasons and I'm very, very, very happy to confirm that I did indeed get engaged to my partner Clare on Thursday evening in the West of Ireland." Speaking about his longterm love, Tubs previously told The Irish Sun: "She has brought an awful lot of joy into my life and happiness and support. "I don't want to talk too much about her, because my private life has always stayed private. "But I think anyone who has met or knows Clare will know exactly why we are seeing each other. I feel very lucky." Asked at the time if the clinical psychologist, who he first interviewed on his RTE Radio One show in March 2023, had been a major support during the last six months. Tubs replied: "Remarkably so."
