
South Africa: Diversification of services sees Capitec grow headline earnings by 30%
Capitec has, for the financial year ending 28 February 2025, reported a 30% increase in headline earnings to R13.7bn. Gerrie Fourie, chief executive officer of Capitec attributes this to the bank's solid foundations for long-term growth, powered by its scalable technology and diversified business model
Personal banking now constitutes 45% of total earnings, insurance accounts for 25%, strategic initiatives (VAS and Capitec Connect) contribute 23%, business banking makes up 5%, and AvaFin (consolidated from 1 May 2024) adds 2%.
It attributes this to its diversification of services over the past five years which include the introduction of business banking, value-added services (VAS), Capitec Connect, and insurance under its own insurance licence as well as its integrated digital ecosystem.
As a result, the bank's active client base now exceeds 24 million.
Capitec's strategic focus on value-added services (VAS) and the Capitec Connect mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) has delivered exceptional results, providing significant client value and convenience.
Their combined net income surged by 61% to R4.4bn.
Growth in airtime and data
Over 11 million clients now utilise the Capitec app to purchase airtime, data, electricity, vouchers, and to pay bills.
The bank captures over 40% of South Africa's airtime and data transactions, and one in five digital vehicle licence renewals now occur on its platform, saving clients both time and money.
Capitec Connect has expanded its unique value proposition beyond the original no-expiry bundle to include highly competitive 1-, 7-, and 30-day validity options, which now account for over 60% of sales.
Active SIM subscribers have grown by 74% to 1.6 million, demonstrating the appeal of its simplified, affordable data offering integrated within the banking ecosystem.
Data usage has surpassed 13.4 petabytes, contributing R193m in net income.
Digital payments continue to accelerate
The shift to digital payments continues to accelerate.
Card payments at tills and online have risen by 18% to more than 2.4 billion transactions, while cash transaction volumes have increased by only 3%.
E-commerce transactions, including those via Capitec Pay, surged by 47% to 488 million.
More than 1 million clients are now actively using their Capitec cards through digital wallets such as Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay.
Capitec has also launched a new International Payments solution on the app, enabling fast and affordable payments to over 50 countries in 13 currencies, for a fixed fee of R175, with funds reflecting within hours.
Meanwhile, new purpose credit solutions are helping clients fund vehicles, education, and home improvements through more than 27,000 partner locations.
Credit sales to clients earning over R50,000 a month grew 56%, as the bank introduced personalised in-app offers, secured home loans, youth credit cards, and repay-as-you-earn loans for side hustlers and freelancers.
Insurance records rapid growth
Operating under its licence, Capitec Life now manages over 3.3 million active funeral and life cover policies, insuring 15 million lives and contributing R1.9bn in net insurance income to the group.
Since May 2024, the bank has added in excess of 600,000 active funeral and life cover policies on its own licence.
New business
Active business clients increased to 218,207 (up 15%), forex transactions grew by 92%, and scored loan balances rose by 111% to R1.3bn.
Capitec's merchant commerce strategy involved selling new smart card machines outright rather than renting them, and providing the most competitive commission rates, which has helped grow the number of active trading merchants by 124% to 63,000, with a total annual turnover of R64bn.
This simplified approach, along with newly reduced and transparent pricing, has saved businesses R289m in banking fees over the past year alone.
A focus on education
Capitec's broader impact also includes significant contributions to financial education and social upliftment.
Through the Capitec Foundation, more than 21,000 learners, educators, and school leaders benefited from improved maths education programmes.
Additionally, 4,000 employee volunteers partnered with nonprofits to deliver 345 initiatives that reached over 27,000 learners. Capitec's MoneyUp Academy and WhatsApp learning bot have delivered 1.6 million lessons, further driving financial literacy across the country.
Solid foundations for long-term growth

South Africa's banks post growth as economic climate improves
South African banks have posted strong revenue growth in 2024, as an improving macroeco- nomic climate and a stabilising political environment bolster the outlook for the country's banking giants. In the first half of the year Standard Bank reported headline earnings of 22bn rand ($1.2bn) – a 4% rise compared to the same period the year before – and a return on equity of 18.5%. In the same period, Old Mutual's pre-tax profit rose by over 10% to 9.22bn rand ($504m), while Capitec saw headline earnings growth of 36% to 6.4bn rand ($350m). FirstRand, Absa and Nedbank also saw similarly strong revenue growth. Com- bined, South Africa's major banks saw a total headline earnings growth of 2.5% in the first half of 2024 compared to 2023 – despite South Africa's macroeconomic picture being complicated in the period owing to a fraught election campaign and considerable levels of political volatility. What explains this strong performance across the board? Higher interest rates in South Africa and globally are part of the picture. With interest rates starting 2024 at 8.25% and still standing at 7.75% – com- pared to pandemic levels of around 3.5% – this has boosted the net interest income banks South African receive on their issues of loans. South African firms expand across continent Part of the growth is also coming from the fact that many major South African finan- cial institutions are increasingly investing abroad in other African markets. Furthermore, international banks with their headquarters in the UK or Europe, such as HSBC, Standard Chartered and BNP Paribas, are increasingly divesting from Africa in order to focus on their core operations and markets. This is opening the door for Africa's most prominent financial institutions – many of which are South Af- rican – to fill the gap that has been left by their departure. Of course, pan-African expansion is not without its risks. While many African markets are seeing high levels of revenue growth in local currency terms, the ongoing strength of the US dollar and massive de- preciation of African currencies has posed difficulties for international banks operating on the continent. However, the upside is also consider- able. For Standard Bank, 41% of the group's headline earnings now come from their franchises in its 'Africa regions', with par- ticularly strong growth from countries such as Angola, Ghana, Kenya, Mozambique, and Nigeria. Partly because of their pan-African expansion, Standard Bank's active client base grew by 5% in the first half of the year. Other South African banks are now simi- larly seeking to enhance their presence across Africa. Nedbank is aiming to reduce its dependence on South Africa by expand- ing into new African markets. The bank recently set the target of increasing the profit share from other African countries from the current level of 9.2% to almost 40% within the next decade. Making strides in fintech Another reason for their strong perfor- mance is that South African banks have also been quick to embrace the potential offered by digitalisation. A recent report from PwC noted that 'the migration of customers to digital banking platforms and channels... has moved from theme to certainty.' 'South Africa's major banks have con- sistently grown their number of digitally active clients every reporting period since the second half of 2019 to approximately 20m,' the report said. The move to digital has allowed South African banks not only to expand their client bases, but also to enhance and personalise the customer experience while making cost-cutting sav- ings, boosting profitability. These digitalisation trends have also contributed to the growth of South Africa's fintech industry, which has become an- other important player in the country's finance scene. In 2023, the country was home to 140 fintech start-ups – around 20% of the African total. South Africa's traditional financial institutions have often moved to support the growth of the country's new fintechs, recognising the growth potential of the fintech industry. For example in March 2024 Standard Bank announced that it would be provid- ing a 200m rand ($11m) 'growth facility' to the Johannesburg-based fintech Float, which offers 'buy now pay later' services – allowing consumers to make purchases on credit cards and split their payments over 24 interest-free and fee-free monthly payments. The facility will allow Float to facilitate the mass rollout of its platform and accelerate its growth plans over the next four years. Announcing the move, Standard Bank said, 'Float aligns with Standard Bank's strategy of driving sustainable growth and supporting fintech businesses which promote financial inclusion and digital transformation across Africa... assisting innovative, high-growth businesses is a key component in achieving sustainable growth across the African technology, me- dia, and telecom landscape.' The potential of South Africa's fintechs is perhaps best evidenced by some ma- jor investments that have taken place. In December the South African digital bank Tyme Group became Africa's latest uni- corn, securing a $250m investment from Brazilian firm Nubank in a Series D round valuing the company at $1.5bn. TymeBank already has 10m users in South Africa and specialises in providing financial services to lower-income and financially excluded individuals. This approach has seen the digital bank secure strong growth even prior to the Nubank cash injection: its net operating income tripled year-on-year in 2024, despite its operational costs going up by 10%. More growth is likely to be in store for TymeBank and other South African fintechs: consultancy Birguid has predicted that the number of South Africans using neobanks will total 19.5m by 2027, driven by continued and rising demand for mobile banking, and a focus on reaching underserved com- munities through digital solutions. Coalition government stability a boon The outlook appears to be positive for South Africa and its banking sector. The establishment of a stable coalition govern- ment after a historic election in May has re- assured investors and business, particularly given the government has embarked on an ambitious programme of structural reform in key areas such as energy and logistics. Lingering challenges in, for example, the country's ports and railway network have hindered growth; but the new coalition government has made resolving these challenges a defining priority. South Af- rica's government of national unity (GNU) has also committed to boosting job crea- tion, slashing public debt, and investing in infrastructure. The Bureau for Economic Research at Stellenbosch University has predicted that these reforms will see South Africa achieve a stronger growth rate of 2.2% in 2025. With inflation on the way down, the South African rand stabilising and strength- ening against the US dollar, and interest rates predicted to come down further, South Africa's growth prospects are looking bright. Similar trends are expected across the region in the key markets in which South African banks operate. The global credit ratings agency S&P recently lifted the outlook for South Afri- can debt from 'stable' to 'positive', saying that the upgrade 'reflects our view that increased political stability following the May general elections and impetus for reform could boost private investment and GDP growth'. While South Africa's rating remains at BB-, below investment grade, a possible credit ratings upgrade would make it cheaper for the government to borrow from capital markets to fund its infrastructure plans. South Africa's banks have proved their resilience in challenging macroeconomic circumstances, with ambitious expansion and digitalisation plans driving up their revenues and profitability. The flaw, if exploited, could give an attacker full control over a device. Positive Technologies revealed that the vulnerability is tracked as BDU:2025-02497 and carries a severity score of 8.6 out of 10 on the CVSS 3.0 scale. It affects Shortcuts version 7.0 (2607.1.3). The app has been part of macOS since Monterey, and is also supported in Ventura, Sonoma, and Sequoia. If a compromised device is connected to a corporate network, attackers could infiltrate the internal infrastructure. Filatov warned that it would be enough for a victim to run a malicious macro unknowingly. Positive Technologies reported that the vendor was notified in line with responsible disclosure policies. A patch has already been issued. Users are advised to upgrade to macOS Sequoia 15.5 or later. If an OS update is not possible, users should avoid downloading unknown shortcuts or using the app altogether. According to the report, possible consequences of exploitation include: Theft or deletion of sensitive data Remote malware installation and ransomware attacks Business disruption in corporate environments The company emphasized that threat actors could upload infected shortcut templates to the app's library. Before the patch, the flaw could be used to bypass macOS security and execute arbitrary code. Positive Technologies has a long track record of studying Apple products. In 2018, its researchers discovered a firmware flaw in Intel Management Engine that affected Apple computers. In 2017, vulnerabilities in Apple Pay were reported, allowing unauthorized transactions. The Shortcuts app is also available on iOS. To prevent threats on mobile, companies are advised to use solutions like PT MAZE. It protects apps by making reverse engineering difficult and costly for attackers.

South African brands dominate Africa's brand value rankings
South African companies continue to lead the continent in brand value. All of the top 10 most valuable African brands are South African, with MTN topping the list at $2.9bn. Checkers' outperforms leading global counterparts when compared to their home markets. Economic volatility MTN has maintained its position as Africa's most valuable brand since Brand Finance began its study of broader African brands in 2020—despite economic volatility and regulatory challenges in key markets like Nigeria. Notably, Nigeria remains one of MTN's largest markets, thanks to its substantial subscriber base. Checkers has emerged as the region's strongest brand, with a Brand Strength Index (BSI) score of 97.7 out of 100. Brand Finance research reveals that Checkers earns outstanding domestic brand perceptions across several brand strength metrics, including likeability, consideration, and recommendation. Brand Finance data also shows that Checkers outperforms leading global counterparts when compared to their respective home markets, including Walmart in the US, Coles in Australia, and Marks & Spencer in the UK. Capitec stands out as the fastest-growing brand in Africa by brand value. The bank has more than doubled its value since 2024, reaching $1.1bn in 2025. Capitec has also climbed from 28th to 14th place in the overall ranking within just one year. According to the latest Brand Finance Africa 200 report, 48 banking brands contribute 31% of the total brand value of Africa's top 200 brands, amounting to $17.7bn. Five of the top 10 brands are from the banking sector—and all are South African. Beyond South Africa, other notable performers include: - Attijariwafa Bank (Morocco), which rose 27% in brand value to $1.1bn, ranking 15th overall. - National Bank of Egypt, up 9.5% to $717m. - Access Bank (Nigeria), up 18% to $559m. - Equity Bank (Kenya), up 23% to $554m. These strong performances highlight the continued strength of the financial sector in shaping the brand value landscape across the continent. Kenya's beer brand Tusker is the second strongest African brand, with a BSI score of 97.1 out of 100, driven by exceptional scores for brand familiarity, consideration, and reputation according to Brand Finance research.
