Fight terror, separatism, extremism—Jaishankar's message at SCO meet, as Pakistan minister looks on

New Delhi: The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) must be 'uncompromising' in its fight against 'terrorism, separatism and extremism'. That was External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar's message at the foreign ministers' conference in Tianjin Tuesday, delivered in the presence of Pakistan's Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar.
Jaishankar is on a two-day visit to China from 14 July till 15 July. He held a number of bilateral meetings with Chinese leaders Monday during his visit to Beijing. He also called on Chinese President Xi Jinping. Tuesday was the meeting of the foreign ministers in Tianjin, which is set to host the Heads of State summit later this year.
This is the first visit by the Indian External Affairs Minister to China since the clashes in Galwan in the summer of 2020. Ties between India and China cratered following the clashes. The political thaw in ties was initiated following the announcement of an agreement to disengage at the friction points along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) last October.
'We will continue to positively approach new ideas and proposals that are genuinely for our collective good. It is essential that such cooperation is based on mutual respect, sovereign equality and in accordance with territorial integrity and sovereignty of member states,' said Jaishankar in his message to the organisation.
He is the third Indian leader to visit China in the last month as a part of the different meetings under the SCO umbrella, before the leaders summit later this year. It is one of the few forums where both India and Pakistan interact.
Jaishankar's message on terrorism and territorial integrity came a couple of months after the 87-hour conflict between India and Pakistan in May 2025. On 22 April, terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam killed 26 people.
India launched Operation Sindoor in retaliation, targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan. Islamabad further escalated the situation hitting Indian military infrastructure, which led to the short conflict between the two neighbours.
Last month, the defence ministers' meeting of the SCO was unable to reach a consensus for a joint statement because they couldn't agree on the language on terrorism. Pakistan had objected to references regarding the Pahalgam terrorist attack, which led to no joint statement being issued.

Afghanistan & economic engagement
Jaishankar called on the members of the SCO to 'step up' development assistance to Afghanistan, promising that India will do so as well. The Taliban regime has been in control of Afghanistan since 2021. Russia, also a member of the SCO, recently moved to recognise the Taliban-led government in Kabul.
'Afghanistan has been long on the SCO agenda. The compulsions of regional stability are buttressed by our longstanding concern for the well-being of the Afghan people. The international community, particularly SCO members, must therefore step up with development assistance. India, for its part, will certainly do so,' Jaishankar said.
With regards to deepening economic collaboration between members of the SCO, Jaishankar pushed for the promotion of the International North South Transport Corridor (INSTC), a transport corridor that links Russia to India via Central Asia.
The INSTC is different from China's own Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), which is President Xi's landmark infrastructure initiative. Jaishankar's promotion of the INSTC, which was envisioned in 2000, marks New Delhi's attempt to suggest an alternative to the BRI.

Tianjin/New Delhi, July 15 (UNI) With Pakistan's Ishaq Dar listening, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar today told the SCO Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Tianjin, China, that the Pahalgam attack was a deliberate attempt to disrupt stability in J&K and sow religious divide, and that India will continue to take action to bring the sponsors and financiers of terrorism to justice. In his remarks at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Council of Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Tianjin, which was also attended by the Pakistan Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, EAM Jaishankar also asked the SCO to remain true to its founding objectives and take an uncompromising position on the scourge of terrorism. Jaishankar mentioned in posts on X regarding the points he had highlighted: 'We meet at a time of considerable disorder in the international system. In the last few years, we have seen more conflicts, competition and coercion. Economic instability is also visibly on the rise. The challenge before us is to stabilize the global order, de-risk various dimensions and through it all, address longstanding challenges that threaten our collective interests. 'India has taken several initiatives in the SCO in domains ranging from startup and innovation to traditional medicine and digital public infrastructure. We will continue to positively approach new ideas and proposals that are genuinely for our collective good. It is essential that such cooperation is based on mutual respect, sovereign equality and in accordance with territorial integrity and sovereignty of member states. 'Deepening collaboration within the SCO naturally requires more trade, investment and exchanges. For that to move to the next level, it is imperative that we address some current issues. 'One of them is the lack of assured transit within the SCO space. Its absence undermines the seriousness of advocating cooperation in economic areas. Another is to ensure the promotion of the International North South Transport Corridor (INSTC). We are confident that it will continue to gather momentum. 'Afghanistan has been long on the SCO agenda. The compulsions of regional stability are buttressed by our longstanding concern for the well-being of the Afghan people. The international community, particularly SCO members, must therefore step up with development assistance. India, for its part, will certainly do so. 'The world is today moving towards greater multi-polarity. This is not just in terms of redistribution of national capacities, but also the emergence of effective groupings like SCO. Negotiations bear fruit, Yemen defers Nimisha's execution
Kochi: The execution of Nimisha Priya, the Keralite nurse on death row at the central prison in Yemen's capital Sana'a for the murder of a Yemeni national, has been postponed following intervention by Indian authorities and religious leaders. Negotiations were underway to save the life of Nimisha, hailing from Kollengode in Palakkad, after her execution was scheduled for July 16, Wednesday. "The execution has been postponed until the prison authorities are notified of a new date," stated an order issued by the public prosecution of the Republic of Yemen. It also said the postponement was based on a directive from their attorney general. The development will give additional time for Nimisha's family to negotiate a mutually agreeable solution. A trial court had sentenced Nimisha to death in 2018, and the verdict was later upheld by an appeals court. She was convicted of murdering Talal Abdo Mahdi, with whom she started a health clinic in Sana'a and later reportedly entered into a marriage, in July 2017. She was accused of chopping his body and dumping its parts in a water tank. Sunni leader Kanthapuram A P Aboobacker Musaliyar, who holds the title of Grand Mufti of India, reached out to prominent Yemeni Islamic scholar Sheikh Habib Omar, seeking his help to persuade Mahdi's family to accept blood money and grant pardon to her. Subhash Chandran of the action council told TOI that Musaliyar's intervention played a major role in the decision to postpone the execution. "Apart from a preliminary discussion with Talal's brother held on Monday, a second round of discussion was held on Tuesday. We are hopeful of progress in discussions in the coming days," he said. Musaliyar said Muslim scholars could hold talks with the judges and Mahdi's family members, and the negotiations would continue in the following days. The talks are being held based on Sharia law, which gives the victim's family the legal right to pardon the convict, either without any condition or in exchange for blood money, he said, adding that the PM's Office was informed about his initiative. Samuel Jerome of the Save Nimisha Priya International Action Council, who is coordinating the negotiation talks in Yemen, said he met Yemen's foreign minister on Tuesday after the execution was postponed. Nimisha's husband Tomy Thomas expressed his gratitude to officials and religious leaders for their intervention in the matter. CM Pinarayi Vijayan described the development as a relief and lauded the efforts of Musaliyar and the action council in the decision. Earlier on Monday, the attorney general of India stated in Supreme Court that the Union govt was making every possible effort to help Nimisha and talks were progressing with Yemeni authorities to secure a suspension of the execution order until negotiations could be pursued.

A significant portion of Naidu's nearly 30-minute address focused on the achievements of Modi. The TDP is a key coalition partner in the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by the BJP, which fell short of securing a simple majority in the 2024 general election. Under Modi, India is taking strides on the world stage with 'confidence, clarity of purpose and bold decision making,' Naidu said. He also made it a point to recall Atal Bihari Vajpayee's role in transforming India's physical infrastructure and telecom sector. India, said Naidu, was primed to become an economic superpower, even surpassing the US and China, if it weds political stability with sound public policy. 'Hard work is no longer relevant, smart work is,' Naidu said, making a strong pitch for quantum computing. As CM, Naidu has taken up an ambitious project of developing a 'quantum city' in Amaravati. It is designed to include startups, MNCs, academia and research laboratories and will feature a building housing India's largest quantum computer, which, Naidu said, will arrive by 1 January, 2026. 'We are in inspiring times. The next 20 years are very crucial for India … With Modi at the helm of leadership, we will become the number one economy. It will happen through unity, hard work and a shared sense of purpose,' Naidu said.
