Japan sees record monthly number of overseas visitors in April

NHK21-05-2025
More than 3.9 million foreign travelers visited Japan in April, marking a record high for a single month and topping the previous record set in January this year.
The Japan National Tourism Organization says an estimated 3,908,900 foreign travelers visited Japan last month, up 28.5 percent from the same month last year.
The monthly figure exceeded the previous record of 3.78 million posted in January this year.
The organization attributes the record number partly to the brisk demand for tours to Japan during the cherry blossom season.
China topped the list with 765,100 visitors, up 43.4 percent from the same month a year before and the highest ever for April.
For the first time in three months the figure for China was again the highest by country and region.
Visitors from South Korea rose by 9.1 percent to 721,600, partly due to an increase in the number of flights connecting Japan and South Korea.
Travelers from the Unites States came to 327,500, up 43.1 percent.
Both countries also posted the highest numbers for April.
The agency's commissioner, Haraikawa Naoya, said he intends to maintain the very favorable momentum. He said that if traveler numbers surge, the agency is expected to face problems such as tourists having to wait longer for entry procedures. He said it is important to put in place measures now to respond to such situations.

Evacuees from quake-hit Tokara Islands to return

Evacuees from the Tokara Islands, hit by a series of earthquakes, are expected to head home starting as early as Friday night, local officials said Tuesday. There are currently nine evacuees from the Tokara Islands off Kagoshima Prefecture, including Akuseki Island, according to authorities of Toshima, a village that includes the islands. Seismic activity near the islands has slowed in recent days, paving the way for the islanders to return, the officials of the village said. The village government is considering providing subsidies for livelihood support to all households on Akuseki Island and also Kodakara Island, another island in the Tokara chain. There have been over 2,200 earthquakes strong enough to be felt around the Tokara Islands since seismic activity intensified on June 21. The biggest was a quake measuring lower 6, the third highest on the Japanese scale, that struck on July 3. The number of earthquakes has lowered since Thursday. But the Meteorological Agency has warned people to stay alert for an earthquake around lower 6.

Japanese love leisure more than ever but turn thrifty

Japanese people's preferences for leisure over work grew to an unprecedented level in 2024 while their tendency to save money became stronger amid rising prices, a private-sector report has shown. In a survey, those who answered they attached importance to leisure rather than to work, including study, last year accounted for 67.8% of the total respondents, the highest reading since comparable data became available in 2009, the Japan Productivity Center said in its 2025 Leisure White Paper, released last week. Among respondents who took part in at least one spare-time activity in 2024, "domestic pleasure trip" enjoyed the highest participation rate of 48.3%, proving to be the most popular way of having fun for three years in a row. However, the figure is lower than 48.7% in the previous survey and far short of the 2019 prepandemic level of 54.3%. "Recent price spikes are believed to have made many people cautious about spending on travel," a JPC official said. "Video viewing" emerged as the second most popular leisure activity with the participation rate of 38.1%, up 1.1 percentage points year on year, while "eating out" descended from second to third with the rate dropping 3.6 points to 35.6%. Those results as well suggest that elevated inflation has been keeping Japanese people from splurging on leisure activities. The nationwide survey was conducted online in February, and 3,467 people gave valid responses.

Japan's Tokara island chain marks 1 month since quake swarm began

Monday marks one month since seismic activity intensified in the sea around the Tokara island chain in southwestern Japan, with nearly 2,200 tremors perceptible to people so far recorded. A series of earthquakes began occurring near the islands of Akusekijima and Kodakarajima of the Tokara island chain on June 21. A quake measuring an intensity of lower 6 on the Japanese scale of 0 to 7 hit Akusekijima Island on July 3. Others with intensities of upper 5 and lower 5 have been recorded three times each on the island. Kodakarajima Island also experienced a quake with an intensity of lower 5. As of 5 a.m. on Monday, there had been 2,196 quakes with an intensity of at least 1 in the sea near the Tokara island chain. The sea off the island chain went through a series of earthquakes in 2021 and again in 2023. But the current swarm has been far larger in terms of the number of jolts. The Japan Meteorological Agency is urging residents to stay alert for the time being for possible quakes with intensities of up to lower 6.
