Putra Heights gas explosion: No developer encroachment, says MB Selangor
Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari stated that development and excavation works were conducted outside the incident site.
A developer carrying out sewage pipe works under the Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) had obtained prior approval from Petronas.
'Petronas set conditions, including appointing a panel company for excavations in their areas. Their recommendations are monitored under Petronas' oversight,' said Amirudin during the Selangor State Assembly sitting.
He confirmed that blacklisted subcontractors had not commenced work at the site. The state has directed MBSJ to enhance contractor selection by reviewing credentials through the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB).
Amirudin assured that findings from the Special Committee on Gas Pipeline Drainage Risk Adaptation will be presented in the next assembly session.
He also proposed a special briefing for state assemblymen before the next sitting.
'The technical committee report has been tabled. The special committee will now investigate thoroughly before presenting recommendations,' he added.
The seven-member committee includes experts nominated by the opposition, ensuring transparency in the probe. - Bernama

The pilot HHFS project at the Kenyir Dam has a capacity of 100kW and spans 1,085sqm with 220 solar panels. This demonstrates that Tasik Kenyir, which covers an area of 36,900ha, holds vast potential for floating solar development, with up to 10% of the lake's surface suitable for generating an estimated 2,200MW without disrupting the lake's ecology. The Prime Minister also said the project is linked to the Asean Power Grid, a major regional initiative that will begin with an undersea cable project connecting Vietnam to Kota Baru, Kelantan, before extending to Peninsular Malaysia's grid and eventually to Singapore. 'This means that from Vietnam, an undersea cable project will reach Kelantan, necessitating the construction of a new grid. The existing grid is considered insufficient in capacity. 'The new grid will start from Kelantan, then pass through Terengganu and I believe it must be connected to the capabilities and infrastructure here in Kuala Berang and Kenyir, extending through Pahang, parts of Selangor, Johor and into Singapore.' Anwar stressed that the HHFS and Green Hydrogen Hub projects are crucial, and all relevant parties must work together to expedite their implementation. In addition, the Prime Minister called on PETRONAS and TNB to explore ways to provide Technical and Vocational Education and Training, including upskilling programmes, specifically for local youths in Kuala Berang, Hulu Terengganu. He said the relevant ministries, such as the Education Ministry, the Higher Education Ministry and the Human Resources Ministry, along with the Terengganu government, PETRONAS and TNB, should initiate specialised training programmes for local youths. 'I want to ensure youths from Kuala Berang are given training opportunities, so that the people here won't say that while a major project is located here, their children are only able to open small restaurants or work as cleaners. 'It would be better to plan the training properly so there is a dedicated facility for the youths of Kuala Berang and Terengganu to undergo specialised training. I hope this can be expedited,' Anwar said.

Former SOGDC CEO refutes Masidi's claims on Sabah oil and gas progress
Abdul Kadir Abdullah Damsal KOTA KINABALU (July 12): A former senior figure in Sabah's oil and gas industry has pushed back against recent remarks by Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun, calling him 'misleading' and lacking historical context in relation to the state's petroleum development. In a press statement, former Chief Executive Officer of Sabah Oil and Gas Development Corporation Sdn Bhd (SOGDC) Abdul Kadir Abdullah Damsal and a practising lawyer questioned Masidi's claim that Sabah's oil and gas sector only began to evolve following the establishment of SMJ Energy (SMJE) in 2021. Abdul Kadir asserted that long before SMJE came into the picture, several state-linked companies had already been actively involved in the industry. These included Sabah Energy Corporation (SEC), Sabah International Petroleum (SIP), subsidiaries under Yayasan Sabah and SOGDC itself. He credited much of the earlier momentum to the then-Barisan Nasional (BN) administration, noting that Petronas had, under a period of political stability, launched the Sabah Integrated Oil and Gas Project (SIOGP) in 2014, an initiative involving investments totalling nearly RM54 billion. 'These projects laid the foundation for Sabah's current oil and gas infrastructure, created thousands of jobs and supported local engineering and service firms,' he said. He also pointed to the formation of a Joint Working Committee (JWC) between the State Government and Petronas, which he said facilitated increased gas allocations to Sabah and significantly boosted local capacity development, including the appointment of a Sabahan as CEO of Petronas' Sabah Ammonia Urea (SAMUR) plant. 'Contrary to recent claims, the industry was not dormant prior to the formation of SMJE. Sabahans have long played a critical role in the oil and gas sector, without resorting to political pressure on local entities such as SAMUR,' he said. Abdul Kadir also cast doubt on the claim that Sabah-based oil and gas firms secured RM2 billion worth of Petronas contracts in 2024, suggesting the figure could be misleading without proper breakdown. 'The contracts may not necessarily have been awarded within Sabah alone and the public deserves clarity on how much actually went to genuinely Sabahan-owned firms,' he added. Touching on SMJE's reported RM362 million profit in 2024, Abdul Kadir clarified that the figure represented group earnings, not solely derived from its upstream interest in the Samarang field. 'A significant portion of that profit came from SIP's 10 per cent equity in LNG Train 9 in Bintulu, a deal initiated during the BN administration and finalised under Warisan,' he explained. He went on to highlight that other state-owned entities including Suria Capital, Sawit Kinabalu and Qhazanah Sabah, have long operated as billion-ringgit asset-based companies, stressing that SMJE's growth should not be portrayed as an isolated success story. Abdul Kadir concluded by urging the State Government to present a more accurate narrative to the public. 'Sabahans deserve the truth, not exaggerated claims or selectively curated retellings of the state's economic journey,' he concluded.

Anwar says every official visit he undertook was aimed at generating economic returns for the country, and not for leisure as alleged by certain quarters. – Bernama photo KUALA TERENGGANU (July 12): Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has denied that his official visits abroad, including to Brazil to attend the recent BRICS Summit, were merely for 'leisure', but rather as an important effort to establish global economic cooperation. He said every official visit he undertook was aimed at generating economic returns for the country, and not for leisure as alleged by certain quarters. 'We do not travel just for sightseeing. During meetings and engagements, we use every opportunity to meet (with leaders and stakeholders to strengthen relationships and cooperation),' he said when officiating the closing ceremony of the Madani Rakyat Programme (PMR) 2025 in Terengganu today. The Finance Minister said Malaysia's strategic cooperation with Brazil had greatly benefited the country, including Petronas being granted access to the largest oil platform in Brazil. As for the frequency of his and several ministers' attendance at various Asean meetings and negotiations recently, Anwar said these were not merely symbolic but had led to concrete results, including Terengganu being selected as the hub for a new green hydrogen energy initiative. He said the project in Tasik Kenyir was highly significant as it aligned with the region's major agenda to implement the Asean Power Grid, which would connect cross-border electricity supply from Vietnam to Malaysia and Singapore through undersea cables. 'This energy production can only be realised through the cooperation of Asean, the Federal Government, and state governments. It will certainly position Malaysia as a major energy producer in the region,' he said. Anwar added that with the rapid emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) technology centres, which demand significantly higher energy and water capacities than typical industries, it was crucial for Malaysia to support and help realise the Asean Power Grid initiative. He also said Malaysia was increasingly respected on the global stage, as demonstrated by the extraordinary participation of major powers in recent Asean meetings, indicating confidence in the country's stability and economic potential. Anwar noted that while Asean meetings involved 10 member countries as well as Timor Leste, the attendance of major powers such as Japan, the United States, Russia, and Turkiye was a remarkable show of support for the platform.
