‘King' Dilip Kumar was served tea in a silver kettle, ate lunch, took a nap and left: Anupam Kher recalls shooting first film with ‘Tragedy King'

Indian Express4 days ago
No one can forget the iconic moment from Subhash Ghai's Karma, when Dilip Kumar's character slaps Anupam Kher's Dr Dang, prompting him to deliver the legendary line: 'Iss thappad ki goonj ab tumhe sunai degi' (The echo of this slap will now ring in your ears). Reflecting on the unforgettable sequence in a recent interview, Anupam Kher shared his memories of shooting the scene and working alongside the legendary Dilip Kumar in Karma. Calling him a 'king', Anupam shared that Dilip worked at his leisurely pace and people around him, never seemed to feel bad even when he decided to take off without giving a single shot.
'He was like a king,' Anupam recalled in a chat with Filmfare. 'On the first day of shooting Karma, I was ready by 7 am even though I had been filming for Arjun till 5 that morning. I told them I needed to be out by 7, and they kept delaying, pulling my leg. But I showed up fully prepared, beard on, in character as Dr Dang. It was my first day on set.'
Anupam further painted a vivid picture of Dilip Kumar's grand entrance later that morning. He shared that the actor stepped out of a luxury car, was served tea in silver uensils, took a nap and decided to take off without shooting anything. 'At around 11 a.m., a white Mercedes arrived. One foot stepped out, wearing white trousers, then he emerged, just like a king. He said, 'Bring me tea,' and they served it in a silver kettle with biscuits. By the time he finished, it was lunchtime,' he said.
All the while, Anupam was waiting in full costume, rehearsing intensely. 'I was eager to make an impression. After lunch, he said, 'I'd like to take a nap,' and I said, 'Of course, sir.' We shot a few other scenes in the meantime. Around 3:30, he said, 'Let's leave it for today. We'll do it tomorrow.' And I again said, 'Yes sir, absolutely.' He had a way of saying things that made it impossible to refuse. That's why he did only about 60 films over a 50-year career. I've done 545 films in 40 years. But he, he was a king.'

Anupam also spoke about his first experience working with another legend, Amitabh Bachchan, during the shooting of the revenge drama Aakhree Raasta. He admitted that when he met Amitabh for the first time, he himself was 'arrogant.' 'I thought I had already done a lot of films,' Anupam said. 'We were shooting in Chennai, it was extremely hot, and there was no air conditioning on set. I was complaining to the production manager, saying, 'Where's my AC?' He said, 'Sir…' and then I asked him who I had the scene with. He told me I had a scene with Amitabh Bachchan, who was already ready at 9 o'clock.' He admitted to reacting sharply: 'I said, 'Okay, okay… don't teach me professionalism now.''
Then came the moment he first saw Amitabh on set. 'There he was, with fake beard, moustache, wig, sitting quietly, wrapped in a wool blanket, reading a book in that sweltering heat,' Anupam said. Awestruck, he approached the superstar and introduced himself. 'He replied, 'Yeah, yeah, I've seen Saaransh. Very good. Sit down, sit down.'' Curious and baffled, Anupam asked how Amitabh could endure such heat while wearing so much. The answer, he said, became a life lesson. 'I asked him, 'Aren't you feeling hot?' And he said, completely straight-faced, 'If I think of heat, I feel it. If I don't think about it, I don't feel it.' I was stunned. That moment taught me so much. From that day, I've never complained about the heat again. That's why he's a legend. That was one of the biggest lessons of my life, and I've carried it with me ever since.'

The Castro grandson who Fidels as Havana plunges into darkness

Cuba, long defined by the Marxist-Leninist and Communist legacy of Fidel Castro's iron-fisted rule and ideals, remains one of the poorest countries in Latin America. With the average monthly wage stuck at around $16.50, everyday life on the island is marked by struggle, scarcity, and sacrifice. But not for everyone, not for the Castro who 'Fidels' while Havana those untouched by Cuba's deepening crisis is Sandro Castro, Fidel Castro's grandson, whose life today is a stark contrast to the austerity preached by his 33, Sandro is a social media figure with over 121,000 Instagram followers. His content doesn't echo political ideology or social concerns; it's a glossy display of wealth, status, and inherited privilege. In one post, he's on a yacht sipping Cristal beer. In another, he races through Havana in a luxury Mercedes-Benz. His nightlife venue, EFE Bar, caters to Cuba's wealthy and well-connected, charging 1,000 Cuban Peso (approximately $42 or Rs 3,600) at the door and demanding a minimum spend of 15,000 CUP (approximately $625 or Rs 54,000) at its tables – figures wildly out of reach for most has posted reels with a soundtrack by Bad Bunny, mocking the long power cuts that have plagued the capital city Havana. In a cheeky jab, he even compared himself to the state electricity company, suggesting he too could hand out his countryside getaway, El Patrn, where nights can cost $100, he lounges and unwinds, while back in the city, fuel, medicine, and food are in short to Fidel's son Alexis Castro, Sandro was raised in Punto Cero, a tightly guarded compound that shielded him from the shortages and stress endured by average Cubans. His life was always that difference plays out online: he wears designer clothes, smokes expensive cigars, and plays reggaeton music from a seat of comfort that symbolises a family that never truly gave up the visibility of his wealth, Sandro's net worth remains a mystery. People endure endless blackouts, empty shelves, and increasing hopelessness. And as all this unfolds, Sandro continues to post cocktails, luxury dinners, and Cristal for many Cubans, represents the hypocrisy of a revolution that demanded sacrifice from its people while shielding its own inner circle. Why is Saiyaara winning hearts (and the box office)?

'Saiyaara' has collected over Rs 100 crore in just four days - unprecedented for a film starring debutants in India. Its popularity, constantly rising since day one, is not limited to the box office response. The YRF biggie has taken over the internet with memes, reels, discussions, debates and that one question: Why is this even working? And honestly, it's a fair a country where theatres have become a secondary medium of entertainment after OTT, a film starring fresh faces, no star pull, no promotional blitz has caught the audience's heart in an unimaginable way. Most theatrical releases were being rejected left, right and centre - and then 'Saiyaara' came along and won everyone over. But, again, why? It's important to understand that there is no definitive formula to determine what works for the audience. Anyone who claims otherwise is either lying or has no sense of the creative business - especially when it comes to cinema. You simply can't predict the public's mood. There's no right answer to why one film clicks at the box office while another it's about the nation's collective sentiment - like 'Pathaan', where audiences rallied behind Shah Rukh Khan after his son Aryan was arrested in a drug-related case. Sometimes, it's an anticipation built on legacy - like 'Pushpa: The Rule', riding on pure love for the 'Saiyaara'? Truth be told, it offers nothing new except its fresh faces. The love story is classic Mohit Suri - passionate, emotionally charged, where the leads wear their hearts on their sleeves and are ready to take on the world. The film shows old-school romance and doesn't even claim to redefine love. So then what is it? What is making audiences flock to theatres, express their emotions so loudly, and become almost unapologetically involved with what's unfolding on screen? The answer probably lies in what made 'Sanam Teri Kasam' re-release so surprisingly successful earlier this year. That film - available for free on YouTube - worked like magic in theatres. And 'Saiyaara' seems to be setting the same trend... film has its heart in the right place. It talks about emotions that are timeless but still not fully understood. You see, when it comes to the matters of love, no matter how wise or experienced, no one can claim to understand it entirely. Love is as complex to process as it is to feel. But, across generations, cultures and languages, one truth remains: when you fall in love, you do it with all you have, and all you are. 'Saiyaara' leans into that tells a familiar story in a language we all understand - music. 'Saiyaara's' music is its soul. Mohit Suri spent around five years collecting these melodies, crafting a world where every note feels like a line of poetry written in calligraphy. Even the trailer and promos kept things mysterious. Who were these two? How did they fall in love? What broke them so deeply? Did they ever meet again? Did one of them die? The air of curiosity pulled viewers in. And when the story of Krish Kapoor, a rising singer, and Vaani Batra, a shy songwriter, unfolded on the big screen, it broke the internet and the box office alike.'Saiyaara' speaks directly to this generation. It reflects their disillusionment, their buried trauma, and their search for meaning in a hyper-curated world. Krish wants to make it big the old school way, while the world chases blue ticks over real talent. Vaani simply wants to exist quietly in an age obsessed with loud influencing. Their parents are trying - sincerely and awkwardly - to help them shine while protecting them from a world they no longer understand. It's all heartbreakingly biggest win is this: it has brought an entire generation back to the theatres - a generation far more comfortable watching (and creating) content on their phones and iPads. For them, going to a theatre is an outdated idea, reserved for family outings or Marvel finales. And yet, they showed up. Not because of hype, but probably because they felt say love is a universal language - maybe they also meant it's a generational one. The Hindi film industry has spent years churning out romantic-comedies, romantic-actioners, romantic-thrillers - all in the name of love. But 'Saiyaara', despite its familiar tropes, revives a genre that's been missing from the big screen for far too long. And history tells us that when Bollywood truly invests in a soul-stirring love story, magic 'Aashiqui' to 'Aashiqui 2', 'Rockstar' to 'Kabir Singh', 'Veer-Zaara' to 'Sanam Teri Kasam', Hindi cinema has consistently struck gold when it tapped into the ache of eternal, unwavering love. 'Saiyaara' treads the same path but brings along some magical music, grounded settings, and characters who feel real. They don't romance in the Swiss valleys or flaunt the Guccis and Drios of the world. They aren't fighting monsters or chasing world domination. They are just two people trying to heal, love, survive - and maybe, build something don't need to prepare yourself to watch 'Saiyaara'. No need to know character arcs or past stories. You just walk in, hum along, feel something, and walk out a little more emotional than when you came in. It's entertainment, yet, but it's also effortless and, therefore, perhaps that's exactly why 'Saiyaara' is doesn't scream for attention. It doesn't try too hard to reinvent the wheel. It simply reminds audiences of the kind of cinema that once made them fall in love with love. At a time when every film is obsessed with being clever, loud, viral or franchise-worthy, 'Saiyaara' is just offers no pretense, no big statements - just two people, their emotions, and the melodies that stitch them together. It's like the cinematic equivalent of a long-forgotten love letter: timeless, comforting, and deeply personal. In the noise of everything else, probably a whisper of a film that manages to reach the loudest corner of the audience's why is Saiyaara working? Maybe the real question is - why wouldn't it?- EndsTrending Reel
