
Miri technician fined RM350 for acting as mule account holder
MIRI (July 31): A technician was fined RM350 in default two weeks' imprisonment by the Magistrates' Court here today for acting as a mule account holder.
Magistrate Ashok Linggam meted out the fine on Shahrin Nizam Arshad, 46, from Penang after he pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 37(1) of the Sarawak Minor Offences Ordinance 1958.
According to the facts of the case, the accused was found in possession of RM350 in his bank account which was suspected to be unlawfully obtained.
During the investigation, Shahrin failed to explain how the funds came into his possession.
He committed the offence at 12.49pm on June 30 at a lot on Jalan Kampung Luak 4E, Kampung Luak Bay, Jalan Bakam here.
In mitigation, the married father of two pleaded for leniency as he was a first-time offender.
The prosecution was handled by deputy public prosecutor Luqman Hakim Sahrol Bahar, while the accused did not have legal representation.

Mining bribery case: Next court date set for Sept 23
KOTA KINABALU: The Special Corruption Court has fixed Sept 23 for further pre-trial case management in the mining prospecting case involving two assemblymen and a businessman. The court set the date on Tuesday (Aug 5) after the prosecution requested more time to prepare documents, including forensics reports, information from telecommunications companies, and confirmation from Immigration. Judge Jason Juga allowed the date and extended bail for all the accused. Indonesian trio fined RM10,000 for operating illegal gambling machines
File photo for illustration purposes KUCHING (Aug 4): Three Indonesians were each fined RM10,000 in default six months' imprisonment after pleading guilty at the Magistrates' Court here to dealing with a gaming machine. Florianus Jeky Chen, 25, Shu Chian, 22, and Asrul, 21, made the plea after the charge against them was read before Magistrate Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan. The trio was charged under Section 4B(a) of the Common Gaming House Act 1953 read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code, which provides a fine of between RM10,000 and RM100,000 for each gambling machine seized, and a jail term of not more than five years, upon conviction. They committed the offence at an apartment unit on Jalan Penrissen, Mile 4 here at about 11am on July 23, 2025. According to the facts of the case, police conducted an Op Dadu raid on the apartment unit and found the three accused each operating a computer and several smartphones containing elements suspected to be linked to online gambling activities. Investigations confirmed that all three individuals were involved in facilitating online gambling, with a forensic gambling expert also verifying that the confiscated devices were used as gambling machines. Meanwhile in the Sessions Court, Florianus and Asrul were each sentenced to three months' imprisonment and one stroke of the cane for illegally entering Malaysia. Sessions Court Judge Saiful Bahari Adzmi convicted the duo on their own guilty plea to a charge under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63, punishable under Section 6(3) of the same Act. Florianus and Asrul were found to have committed the offence following their arrest during the Op Dadu raid, when checks by police with the Immigration Department showed no valid record of the pair entering Malaysia.
