Japan auto trade 'unfair', could buy more US oil, Trump tells Fox News
June 30 (Reuters) - Japan engages in "unfair" automobile trade with the United States and should increase its imports of U.S. energy resources and other goods to help reduce the U.S. trade deficit, President Donald Trump said in an interview broadcast on Sunday.
Tokyo is scrambling to find ways to get Washington to exempt Japan's automakers from 25% automobile industry-specific tariffs, which are hurting the country's manufacturing sector. Japan also faces a 24% so-called reciprocal tariff rate starting on July 9 unless it can negotiate a deal.
"They won't take our cars, and yet we take millions and millions of their cars into the United States. It's not fair, and I explained that to Japan, and they understand it," Trump said in an interview on Fox News' "Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo".
"And we have a big deficit with Japan, and they understand that too. Now we have oil. They could take a lot of oil, they could take a lot of other things."
The automobile sector accounted for about 28% of the total 21 trillion yen ($145 billion) worth of goods Japan exported to the U.S. last year.

UK pharma group Hikma ploughs $1bn into US manufacturing as tariff threat lingers
Medicines firm Hikma Pharmaceuticals plans to invest $1billion into US manufacturing and research and development over the next five years. The London-headquartered firm told investors on Monday the investment would expand its domestic capabilities 'to develop, produce and deliver a broad range of medicines needed by the US healthcare system to treat patients nationwide'. Hikma specialises in generic medicines - medications created to be the same as a brand-name drug, but usually sold at a lower cost. It comes as the UK-US trade deal comes into effect today, leaving UK carmakers with reduced tariffs of 10 per cent and removing levies on the aerospace sector entirely. However, Britain's pharmaceutical sector still faces the potential for further tariffs down the line, as well as recent suggestions the White House could move to clamp-down on the price of medicines in the US. UK pharma sold £6.6billion worth of products to the US last year, meaning the sector is Britain's second-biggest export to the country. President Donald Trump's threat to end exemptions on pharma tariffs, which are driven by a 1995 World Trade Organisation deal, has sparked fears that disruption to the sector's highly complex supply chain could have implications for UK pharmacies and patients. Hikma said on Monday it has provided access 'to a wide range of generic medicines at a lower cost than branded products' since operating in the US since 1991. The group's 'America Leans on Hikma' strategy plans to increase the volume of 'essential medicines' developed and produced across its R&D and manufacturing sites in Columbus and Cleveland, Ohio and New Jersey. Hikma said: 'This next phase of expansion will help to strengthen Hikma's portfolio of more than 800 medicines and increase the company's US-based capacity to produce large volumes of high-quality and affordable medicines for American hospitals, providers and patients.' President of Hikma's generics business Dr. Hafrun Fridriksdottir added: 'We are proud to continue our ongoing investments in US manufacturing and R&D to better serve the needs of American patients. Donald Trump has urged Israel and Hamas to agree a ceasefire - as the number of Palestinians killed in Gaza reached 56,500. "MAKE THE DEAL IN GAZA. GET THE HOSTAGES BACK!!!," he wrote on social media on Sunday. The US president had raised expectations of a possible agreement this week, but some Palestinians were doubtful of the latest efforts to end the 20-month war that has laid waste to most of Gaza. "Since the beginning of the war, they have been promising us something like this: release the hostages and we will stop the war," said one Palestinian, Abdel Hadi al Hour. "They did not stop the war." An eight-week ceasefire was reached in the final days of Joe Biden's US presidency, but Israel resumed the war in March after trying to get Hamas to accept new terms on next steps. Meanwhile, Israeli attacks in Gaza continued on Sunday. At least 15 people were killed when an IDF airstrike hit a house sheltering displaced people in the Jabaliya al-Nazla area, according to an official in Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry. He said women and children made up more than half the dead. Israel's military ordered a mass evacuation of Palestinians in large swathes of northern Gaza, home to hundreds of thousands who had returned during the ceasefire earlier this year. Hamas says it is willing to free all the hostages in exchange for a full withdrawal of Israeli troops and an end to the war in Gaza. Israel rejects that offer, saying it will agree to end the war if Hamas surrenders, disarms and goes into exile - something that the group refuses.
